A PART Questions - 15 You will hear a man describing a series of books For each question, fill in the missing information in the numbered space You will hear the recording twice We’ll start today’s show by looking at few of best-selling books that have been released this last month For all science fiction fans, ‘The Planet Wars’ is an (6) story of a war between man and plants from other planets, set in the 27 th century Despite such an unlikely setting, the story actually develops very interestingly and I (7) being caught up in the clever story and needing to know what was going to happen next If you are looking for a good (8) , maybe you should avoid ‘A Long Way Home’ A bright idea about a family on a four hundred mile trip across the country, unfortunately turns into an over-lengthy drag, almost 500 pages in all! The jokes were not bad, but there was too much (9) , even for this usually successful writer A modern love story ‘Catch a Dream’ is a groundbreaking tale set in the streets of London Ally and Jane have to go through a hard street world to be together, but don’t expect a (10) ending The depth of the characters’ feelings, both happy and dark, throughout this unpredictable novel is highly original and absorbing for the reader ‘House of fear’ is the third book in the series, which (11) the war between rival vampire tribes However, when one side tries to awaken Dracula to lead them, a group of (12) and university students are caught in the middle of the battle Can they save the world? Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves We spoke to the director Julia Smith She explained, ‘Teenager fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been particularly successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books Now they’re realizing that teenagers aren’t just older children but they’re not adults either and often aren’t interested in adult fiction For this series we’re looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.’ Athene Gorr’s novel was published in the series last year and is selling well Its title is The Purple Ring She says, “The important thing is to persuade teenagers to pick up your book I’m a new writer so, although I’ve got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15 She said, ‘I’ve read a few books in the Waves series They say they’re for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that We’re not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties I like them and I think they look really good too The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children’s section, lots of teenagers won’t find them so they may not very well And it’s a shame there’s no non-fiction in the series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy that.’ 16 What is the writer trying to do?
