The Avidia Advantage Series Owners and managers of multi-tenant or multi-dwelling units (MTU/MDU) look for ways to increase the value of their property. An easy solution is to attract new tenants who are willing to pay premium rent prices for amenities that include the convenience and speed of DSL services. These tenants can move in and immediately set up their home or office. They don’t have to wait for truck rolls or wait on a list to get service. And they can immediately have access to a high-speed Internet connection, a corporate LAN extension, and limitless other services. As the provider of these services, you benefit by delivering to the MTU/MDU high bandwidth services at competitive prices, helping to counter the ever-increasing competition from cable operators. The services could include multimedia, streaming audio and video, online gaming, video conferencing, and telecommuting enhancements. Also, you can greatly increase your customer base by infiltrating these densely populated units. And it’s simple to deploy these services using ADC’s Avidia systems solution. What Avidia Offers Avidia systems offer: • flexible product structure where you can provide multiple DSL services from one platform • high bandwidth DSL services with varying rates and reaches, including standards-based ADSL and G.shdsl, SDSL (frame and cell), and IDSL • aggregation of bandwidth from all tenant traffic to a large pipe, such as DS3 or OC3/STM-1, back to the Central Office (CO) or service provider • IMA (Inverse Multiplexing Architecture) feature for T1/E1 infrastructure that allows aggregation of T1/E1 lines to provide larger bandwidths to accommodate tenants’ network traffic and QoS requirements • ease of installation and configuration using a robust Avidia interface or StarGazer (ADC’s SNMP-based EMS for Avidia and Campus) • full solution including the CO and MTU/MDU systems, and modems for the tenants’ sites Deploying DSL for MTU/MDU Environments 4/00 • 100314PR The Avidia Advantage Series Deploying DSL for MTU/MDU Environments Avidia DSL Deployment The Avidia 3000 (AV3000) system is simply placed in a basement or equipment closet of the building. The AV3000 is available in both AC and DC power versions; so whatever power source you have, the AV3000 meets your need. The AV3000 connects upstream to a DS3 or T1/E1 interface in a CO using the copper infrastructure. Another Avidia system such as an AV8000, AV6000, or another AV3000 system could be that upstream connection. Or, if you have the convenience of a fiber optic ring near the MTU/MDU, you can connect to it through an OC3/STM-1 interface. From the AV3000, you can supply DSL services to each tenant for their business or residence. 2 www.adc.com • +1-952-938-8080 Installation at the Tenant Site At the tenants’ sites, any pre-wired phone jack in the residence or office can be used to connect the modem. ADC offers a premium selection of ADSL (both G.lite and G.dmt) and SDSL frame modems. For ADSL transmission, select from the following: • For residential applications, select an ADSL Skyrocket modem that includes both USB (external) and PCI (internal) versions and offers ease of installation for high-speed internet access. These modems can provide either G.dmt (full-rate) or G.lite (reduced rate) ADSL service. • For small office/home office applications, select an ADSL Megabit Modem 500L that can run up to 8 PPP sessions simultaneously. This modem provides G.lite ADSL service. • For business internet access applications, select an ADSL Megabit Modem 600F that can run up to 32 PPP sessions simultaneously. This modem can provide either G.dmt (full-rate) or G.lite (reduced rate) ADSL service. • For business LAN extension applications, select an ADSL Megabit Modem 400F that can run up to 32 bridging/routing (RFC 1483 protocol) sessions simultaneously. This modem can provide either G.dmt (full-rate) or G.lite (reduced rate) ADSL service. • For business LAN extension or PPP internet applications, select an ADSL Megabit Modem 700F that can run up to 32 bridging/routing (RFC 1483 protocol) sessions or 32 PPP sessions simultaneously. This modem can provide either G.dmt (full-rate) or G.lite (reduced rate) ADSL service. For SDSL frame transmission, select the SDSL frame Megabit Modem 300S which is a bridging-only modem. For both the SDSL cell and IDSL services, ADC recommends modems that are tested and compatible with the Avidia system. MTU/MDU Application Examples Examples of MTUs/MDUs that are ideal for this solution are: • commercial campuses such as business parks, office building, hospitals, universities, hotels, shopping malls, and so forth. • residential campuses such as hotels, dormitories, apartments, and so forth. How Does the AV3000 Benefit You for MDU/MTU Applications? • Creates cost effective deployment through the ability to be subtended by other Avidia systems. • Brings high-speed DSL to MTU/MDU tenants, extending services that will help increase the value of your property. • Increases the volume of your customer base through densely populated MTU/MDUs. • Deploys in a small space due to the small footprint, making it ideal for installing into MTU/MDU environments. • Provides a upstream bandwidth as large as an OC3, allowing you to accommodate the QoS needs of your tenants. • Delivers services such as full-rate ADSL (up to 7.5 Mbps) to your tenants, expanding your services to a broader customer base and providing a high-speed ADSL for which you can bill higher rates. • Provides the selection for either full-rate ADSL service or G.lite ADSL service (limits transmission rate and power consumption). • Reduces operation costs of setting up the Avidia system, whether subtended or not, using the intuitive Avidia interfaces, making the training of personnel an easy task. 4/00 • 100314PR The Avidia Advantage Series Deploying DSL for MTU/MDU Environments 3 www.adc.com • +1-952-938-8080 ADC Telecommunications, Inc., P.O.
