CHALLENGE A major global enterprise-network service provider needs to deploy both metro- and regional-access rings to meet a customer’s demand for a highly reliable network to support critical enterprise applications. This includes interconnection of its mainframe systems and storage- area networks. STRATEGY Engage a professional services partner with in-depth technical expertise and proven experience to complete the project on-time, on-budget while delivering superior quality to meet the end customer’s needs. RESULTS By selecting ADC Professional Services to deliver a comprehensive set of planning and deployment services, the service provider streamlined its entire deployment process, saving both time and money while improving time-to-revenue for its managed services. PLANNING AND DEPLOYING HIGH AVAILABILITY BROADBAND NETWORKS FOR MANAGED BUSINESS SERVICES CASE STUDY BUSINESS CHALLENGE As part of its business continuity and disaster recovery services, a major global enterprise- network service provider developed a suite of high-availability services to offer its customers continuous availability to interconnect data centers and business sites. The infrastructure included network synchronous data mirroring and multisite fail-over server clusters. In this environment, SONET/DWDM multiplexers serve as the interface between the optical network and the customer’s networks. The architecture is comprised of base point-to-point and a high- availability network ring. The service allows for various and unique data protocols carried over an optical network. As part of its deployment efforts for a global manufacturer of health and hygiene products, the service provider needed to build two high- availability network rings; one ring to serve as a metro ring and a second to connect data infrastructures located 90 miles apart. For this service provider, the project represented its largest high-availability network deployment to date in terms of the number of connected nodes. Given the complexity of the project, expertise in optical networking and the technical resources required to successfully complete the deployment, the service provider chose ADC as its professional services partner. ADC SOLUTION ADC implemented a suite of professional services specifically tailored for high-availability network ring deployments. As a Cisco Systems’ Advanced Technology Provider for optical metro transport and metro DWDM, ADC offered the service provider in-depth technical expertise with critical network components as well as extensive experience in complex multivendor, multiservice, multitechnology environments. After discussions with the service provider’s network design team, ADC developed customized Engineering Design Packages (EDPs) for both rings. The EDPs contained specific site details and overall ring architecture information including: • Network diagrams • Job information • Site directions • Customer deliverables • Task list/installation notes • Commissioning/provisioning sheets • Test data sheets • Diagrams for: - Cable racks - Fiber raceways - Power and grounding - Top and bottom supports - Bay and shelf layouts - Signal flows/fiber runs - Cabling - Timing - Parallel telemetry/alarm wiring ADC also developed sets of site-specific detailed instructions for installation that included: • Material lists • Cable running diagrams • Rack and shelf configurations • External cabling configurations • Site-specific EDP information CASE STUDY The final engineering documentation for the rings were integrated into the service provider’s Ring Design Packages, which contained all the engineering information about the rings and included: • Site floor plans • Commissioning and telemetry data • Equipment lists • Baseline fiber characterization and equipment power-level information • Commissioning and integration test documentation • Testing procedures • Diagrams for: - Physical and logical ring overviews - Equipment elevation - Shelves and card layout assignments - Fiber-ring design In addition to engineering services, ADC provided materials management services to procure and handle all the miscellaneous and connectivity materials for each deployment. Once these materials were in ADC’s secured facilities, ADC pre-assembled the nodes. ADC burned-in and tested OEM equipment, verified the software and firmware versions and precommissioned the nodes prior to job-site delivery. ADC also provided installation services as well as commissioning services that included: • Loading and verifying all the software configurations • Integrating all the nodes into both rings • Adjusting optical power levels • Configuring all the network management levels As a final step in the deployment process, ADC conducted tests that included: • Network management system tests • Optical interface tests • Bit Error Rate measurement tests • Synchronization integrity verification • Protocol testing • Far-end and graduated loop back testing • Protocol testing RESULTS ADC provided the enterprise-network service provider a comprehensive package of services that helped to streamline the entire planning and deployment process. By working with a single source of professional services, the service provider realized cost and time savings. More importantly, ADC’s turnkey approach to high- availability network deployments ensured that the service provider could meet its commitment to its end customer to deliver 99.999 percent network availability for business continuity and uninterruptible access to critical information.
