ABSTRACT This research is carried out to investigate the similarities and differences in the use of Left dislocation and Right dislocation in English and Vietnamese short stories The analytical data is collected from ten English and ten Vietnamese short stories from 1990 until now In the research, Left dislocation and Right dislocation in English is compared and contrasted with Vietnamese equivalents in terms of their structure and function The result of the research shows that there are similarities and differences in the use of these constructions in English and Vietnamese short stories The most prominent similarity in the use of LD and RD in English and Vietnamese short stories is that in terms of structure, these constructions can be realized by a Noun phrase moved leftward or rightward is coreferential with a resumptive pronoun in the same sentence And the most significant difference is that LD realized in English short stories can perform the function of contrasting focusing in English and Vietnamese short stories viii 34 1.2 Right dislocation in English and Vietnamese short stories 1.2.1 Similarities RD constructions in English and Vietnamese short stories have the same following features: - Structurally, Right dislocated element is typically realised by a Noun phrase moved to the final position of the sentence - As regard punctuation, RD can be separated from the previous part of the sentence with a comma -In terms of funtion, both English RD and Vietnamese equivalent can perform the functions of Identifying the referent, Reintroducing the topic and Adding attributive meaning 1.2.2 Differencies Functionally, the fundamental difference between RD in English and Vietnamese equivalent is that one of the most typical functions of Vietnamese RD is Reintroducing the topic meanwhile Identifying the referent and Adding attributive meaning are the mains function of English RD Because RD in English is used mainly to compensate for unclear information Especially, RD in Vietnamese short stories performs the function of Focusing whereas English RD does not 1.3 The frequency of using LD and RD in English and Vietnamese short stories Based the on the result of the study, it can be conclude that the use of dislocation constructions in English short stories are more popular than in Vietnamese short stories And in both English and Vietnamese short stories, LD occures more frequently than RD 39 Limitations of the study In dealing with English LD and RD, there have been some issues that need more time and attempts to study However, due to the limit of time and the scope of the study, this thesis could not cover all This thesis has focused on the structural and functional features of LD and RD in English and Vietnamese and could not have gone into further examinations of other aspects of the constructions such as their pragmatic issues which are equally important The analysis of structure and realisation of LD and RD in Vietnamese is basically imposed by the study of LD and RD in English whereas background information for LD and RD in Vietnamese has not been much Consequently, the concept of equivalents between the two constructions can not be found Furthermore, there are some aspects that have not been dealt with within this thesis such as the intonation, pragmatics and punctuation or cultural characteristics affecting LD and RD in English and Vietnamese Pedagogical implications Vietnamese learners of English can encounter problems comprehending or translating non-canonical constructions in general and dislocation constructions in particular if they are not explicitly given formal instruction concerning this linguistic phenomenon; Therefore, this study provides learners with the structures and functions of LD and RD realized in English and Vietnamese short stories It is necessary for English language learners as well as Translators to take the relationship between syntactic structure and pragmatic function into consideration to fully comprehend and translate exactly the ideas of the writer as using dislocated constructions Suggestions for further study Further studies are encouraged in related areas such as the intonation of dislocated elements in relation to their pragmatic functions or equivalent concept of dislocation constructions in English and in Vietnamese
