the directions in which the study of biblical Hebrew poetry is presently being pursued Additionally the essays reflect directions in which such study has been pursued in the past, and point the way for future explorations along this highly creative and exciting line of inquiry Those who have contributed are for the most part individuals who have participated in the meetings of the Biblical Hebrew Poetry Section of the Society of Biblical Literature during the past five years One important feature of their work, and of the volume in general, is its interdisciplinary character Biblical study which focuses on a literary form cannot help but touch upon the larger field of literary criticism with its methodologies Authors have also drawn insights from the fields of music, drama, classics, philosophy and the social sciences in the preparation of their essays One hopes that the result will prove of interest and use to persons engaged, not only in the field of biblical studies, but in disciplines which are seen more and more as relating to it In selecting essays for the collection, no effort has been made to create an exhaustive catalog of even the most important approaches to the subject, although many of them are represented here in one form or another Rather, the editor has sought to include a variety of approaches—some traditional, some quite innovative and controversial—in order to suggest the richness of the study itself and to provide a sense of its expansiveness in the future ELAINE R FOLLIS Principia College Elsah, Illinois This page intentionally Any who universalize are out of touch with concrete pain and concrete joy, which are the only kind of pain and joy that matter at all One must take care not to generalize or universalize from a mythic perspective on the poem Rather the transference and repeated utilization is not from concrete to universal, but from this one concrete to another concrete setting It is sometimes noticed that the poetic experience of oppression and dance in Israel speaks faithfully about another experience of oppression and dance which now takes on poetic power The poem has generative power because it discloses what is present in other experiences beyond this one of Miriam Israel insists that what is present for those who can notice is oppression and transformation Where the disclosing poem is not sung, the experience may not be disclosed Then there will be only hopeless subservience and knuckling under Where there is no poem, there will be no new social possibility, no new act of God, no text, and no community This poem in its concreteness generates other poems also concrete, which function in disclosing ways about other odd situations of oppression and hope NOTES Bernhard W Anderson,
