VIETNAM ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES GRADUATE ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES NGUYEN THI THUY HO CHI MINH MORAL IDEOLOGY EDUCATION IN PERSONALITY FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTS TODAY Major : Ethics Code : 22 90 06 SUMMARY OF PH.D THESIS HANOI, 2018 The work is completed at: Graduate Academy of Social Sciences Scientific advisor: Assoc.Prof., Dr Nguyen The Kiet Opponent 1: Prof., Dr Nguyen Van Tai Opponent 2: Assoc Prof., Dr Hoang Anh Opponent 3: Assoc Prof., Dr Tran Thi Minh Tuyet The thesis was defended before the Thesis Assessment Board of Academy level at Graduate Academy of Social Sciences on , 2018 Available at: - National Library of Vietnam - Library of Graduate Academy of Social Sciences INTRODUCTION Rationale As a matter of fact, in any historical periods, the youth, including students is a great social force, the future owner of the country and one of the important factors that decide the country's future As President Ho Chi Minh asserted: "The youth is the future owner of our country Indeed, the state of being prosperous or failed, strong or weak largely depends on the youth,” During the process of leading the revolution, President Ho Chi Minh and the Party often paid attention to the education and training of the youth in general and students in particular, so that they would become people with both virtue and competency who can shoulder the heavy yet glorious duties of the nation He always promoted and affirmed the role of morality in personality formation and development of man, because, "virtue is the root", the foundation of revolutionists, just like trees must have roots, or rivers must start from somewhere Revolutionists must have revolutionary virtue as the foundation to accomplish arduous and difficult revolutionary cause His ideas on revolutionary morality and his moral example has been and will be the foundation for the young generation in general and Vietnamese students in particular to learn from and follow In the current development of socialism in Vietnam today, the role of students is increasingly prominent They are the elite and knowledgeable force who is always at the forefront of all youth activities and plays the role of critical human resource that contributes to the success of the country's industrialization and modernization After more than 30 years of innovation, generations of students who are both virtuous and talented, have good health, active thinking and creative action have been born They are following the heroic footsteps of their fathers, have the will to strive in learning and working, to establish their own career and enrich themselves in a legitimate manner, and also desire to be trusted and to dedicate themselves to the common cause However, the downside of market economy and globalization has led to negative changes in the moral scale in terms of perception, perspective and moral sense of each student; especially, at present“there are still a lot of students with low sense of striving, ignorance to sociopolitical issues, and faded revolutionary ideal They are unable to determine their purposes in life, have signs of moral degradation, and are involved in social evils and breaches of laws, etc.” This situation tends to grow worse, and has become a common concern of the whole society This is one of the reasons why we need to enhance the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education and personality cultivation in a scientific manner for Vietnamese students today On the other hand, the issue of personality development for students is not only a result of degradation in morality and lifestyle of a part of students today, which requires to be overcome, but it is also for long-term development, for a healthy society and high-quality human resource with strategic vision and action in the future At present, the country's economic development and modernization really need economic power, but in the end, the economy itself has no purpose And practical experience proves that, if the foundation of healthy spiritual life and lifestyle is not built up, the society cannot develop sustainably, the life of each individual and each family in the community cannot be peaceful; the youth and the students cannot healthily establish themselves and find prospects in life So, how to build a future generation of intellectuals who are comprehensively developed, have both virtues and competency, eager to study and train themselves for tomorrow's career for their own happiness and the future of the nation, and meet requirements of the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the country? Researching and learning Ho Chi Minh moral ideology as well as the role of his moral example and ideology will become a very important key and the basis to come up with solutions for developing personality of students, in order to serve the country's industrialization and modernization well Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students must be done regularly to avoid the feeling of disenchanted and deviation, and ensure the right orientation in morality and personality formation and development of students It is a necessary and urgent task, especially in the current period, when both the Party and the people (including students) are actively implementing Directive No 05-CT/TW of the 12th Politburo"On promoting the study and practice of Ho Chi Minh ideology, morality and lifestyle" For the above reasons, the PhD student chooses "Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today" as the topic of doctoral thesis in order to contribute a small part to the work of educating Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today Objective and mission of the thesis 2.1 Research objective The thesis contributes to clarification of the role and current state of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students, thus proposes some main directions and solutions to promote the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today 2.2 Research mission In order to achieve the above objective, the thesis performs the following tasks: - Presenting an overview of research relating to the topic - Clarifying arguments on Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education, the rules of personality formation and development of students, content and role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today - Analyzing factors with influence and assessing the current state of the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today as well as its causes - Proposing main directions and solutions in order to promote the role of Ho Chi Minh's moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today Research subject and scope of study 3.1 Research subject: The thesis mainly focuses on researching the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today 3.2 Scope of study - The thesis only limits the scope of study to Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students in some universities and colleges for personality formation and development of Vietnamese students from 1986 to date - During the research, although the author has mentioned two main factors constituting personality: virtue and competency; however, for students, since their encounter with real life is still little, so that their competency hasn't been revealed a lot; on the other hand, personal morality is the core of personality, the top criterion when considering and assessing a person's personality Therefore, in the framework of this topic, the thesis only focuses on going deep into the investigation and analysis of social and moral qualities in personality of Vietnamese students today Theoretical basis and research methodology 4.1 Theoretical basis - The thesis is based on fundamental ideas of Marxism Leninism, Ho Chi Minh Ideology and Ideology of the Communist Party of Vietnam on morality, personality, the youth, students and Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for the youth and students - The thesis also refers to, inherits and uses achievements of published scientific research works related to the contents mentioned in the thesis 4.2 Research methodology The thesis is compiled based on the application of dialectical materialism and historical materialism combining with analysis and synthesis, historical-logical method, comparison, etc to clarify the contents of the thesis New scientific contributions of the dissertation - The thesis contributes to the clarification of the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today - The thesis contributes to the analysis of Ho Chi Minh moral education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students over the past time, thus pointing out its causes - The thesis propose main directions and solutions in order to promote the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today Theoretical and practical significance of the thesis 6.1 Theoretical significance - The thesis helps clarify the philosophical view on personality of students, the rules of personality formation and development of students - The thesis contributes to the explanation of the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today 6.2 Practical significance - Findings of the thesis can be used as references for the research, teaching and education of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology for students of academies, universities and colleges in Vietnam today - The thesis presents recommendations for promoting the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today Structure of PERSONALITY FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTS TODAY - SOME ARGUMENTS 2.1 The concept of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students, personality formation and development of Vietnamese students 2.1.1 The concept of morality and Ho Chi Minh moral ideology 2.1.1.1 Morality Morality, as a form of social consciousness, is a set of social principles, rules and norms in order to adjust and assess human's behaviors in interpersonal and social relationships They originate from personal beliefs, traditions and the power of public opinion 2.1.1.2 Ho Chi Minh moral ideology Ho Chi Minh moral ideology is a system of fundamental and comprehensive ideas of Ho Chi Minh on morality, including the role, basic moral qualities and principles for cultivation of new morality revolutionary morality in the process of Vietnam's revolution from national liberation to development of socialism, which both carry national identity and learn from cultural essences of humanity 2.1.2 Origin and characteristics of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology 2.1.2.1 Origin and characteristics of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology The birth of Ho Chi Minh Ideology in general and of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology in particular is the consistency between objective conditions and subjective factors Ho Chi Minh Ideology not only inherits good moral traditions of the nation but also inherits and selects essences of human morality 2.1.2.2 Characteristics of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology First, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology is thoroughly revolutionary and scientific 11 Second, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology has consistency between morality and politics Third, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology has consistency between morality and laws Fourth, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology has consistency between morality and talents Fifth, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology is lively, easy to understand, universal, and consistent between moral education and practice 2.1.3 Ho Chi Minh moral ideology educationfor students 2.1.3.1 Education Education is a two-way process: on one hand, it's the external impact on the subject of education (impact of human knowledge and culture on student's life through the educator); on the other hand (and most importantly) through this impact, the subject will self-transform, self-perfect, self-improve 2.1.3.2 Student Vietnamese students, in the most general sense, are all who are studying at universities and colleges, of all types of training with age from 18 to 25 2.1.3.3 Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students is a process of impacting on students through explanation, propagation, persuasion of revolutionary moral principles and norms, in order to help them grasp those principles and norms On that basis, a scientific foundation for perception and practice of morality in the revolutionary process of Vietnam is built The embodiment of the process of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education is: First, the subject of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education positively affect the object of that education 12 Second, the object of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education is students, who hold the decisive role of determining educational effectiveness Third, the content, method, and form of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of students are associated with students' specific role and duties, especially moral learning and training under new practical conditions of the country and the era 2.1.4 Student personality, the rules of personality formation and development ofstudents 2.1.4.1 Student personality Student personality is the combination of moral qualities, physical and mental capacities which are formed in a historical and specific manner, regulate values and social behaviors of students, and are presented and implemented in the learning, communication, behavior and social activities of each student 2.1.4.2 The structure of student personality The author look at the insight of and approach student personality according to structure of personality when considering it in the relationship between quality and competency This structure, according to Ho Chi Minh, is the consistency between "virtue and competency" in each personality, in which "virtue" is the root, the basis for the formation and development of personality, including social qualities, personal qualities, volitional qualities and behaviors On the other hand, "competency" means the ability to adapt to the society, complete assigned tasks with high quality and performance in a certain area, as well as the ability to establish and maintain relationship with other 2.1.4.3 The rules of personality formation and development of students First, personality formation and development of students represent a process of unification between the biological side and the social side, between the individual and the society 13 Second, the formation and development of student personality reflects a consistent process of education and self-education 2.2 The role and content of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students 2.2.1 The role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students First, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education contributes to the formation and development of scientific worldview and progressive approach to life in personality of Vietnamese students Second, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education positively contributes to the process of constructing good personal moral qualities for students Third, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education contributes to motivate and encourage students to self-study and practice in order to build new personality Fourth, Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education helps students comprehensively develop rich personality, thus able to stand against negative impacts of the downside of market economy and international integration, as well as the enemy's sabotage 2.2.2 The content of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students First, educating "Loyalty" and "Filial piety" Second, educating diligence, thriftiness, honesty, righteousness and selflessness Third, educating students of love for people, live with affection and gratitude and fight against individualism Fourth, educating solidarity, collective spirit and pure international spirit for students Fifth, educating awareness of the importance of revolutionary morality and method of cultivating revolutionary morality following Ho Chi Minh moral ideology in personality formation and development of students 14 Chapter 3: HO CHI MINH MORAL IDEOLOGY EDUCATION IN PERSONALITY FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTSTODAY- CURRENT STATE AND CAUSES 3.1 Factors affecting Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students 3.1.1 The impacts of globalization and international integration on Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today First, positive impacts of globalization and Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today First is, the activeness of subjects in Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education Second is, the renovation of method and form of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education for students Third is, through self-education and self-practice following Ho Chi Minh moral ideology of students during personality formation and development 3.2.3 Basic causes of the limitations in Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today First is, perceptions and views of the subjects of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education Second is, the organization of content and program for Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education Third is, the organization of renovating method of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education Fourth is, the psychology of age and the lack of moral cultivation of part of students From the advantages and limitations mentioned above, a number of conflicts which have been emerging in the process of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in the formation and development of personality of Vietnamese students today can be summarized They are: First, the conflict between the need to enhance the role and responsibilities of the subject in Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in the formation and development of student personality 17 and the limited capabilities and non-synchronous coordination between these subjects in the implementation Second, the conflict between the need to improve effectiveness of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of students and the complicated real life with lots of difficulties and paradoxes Third, the conflict between the need to raise awareness of learning, practicing and cultivating Ho Chi Minh ideology, morality and lifestyle in personality formation and development of students and the weak self-discipline in learning and moral degradation of part of students today 18 Chapter 4: MAIN DIRECTIONS AND SOLUTIONS TO PROMOTE THE ROLE OF HO CHI MINH MORAL IDEOLOGY EDUCATION IN PERSONALITY FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTS TODAY 4.1 Directions to develop the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today 4.1.1 Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of students must be consistent between theory and practicality, learning and practice The education of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology for students should be closely linked to the current situation and task of the country today; avoid the teaching method using dogma and imposition and pay attention to developing creative thinking and combining mind and emotion Moral educators must always be an example for learners in terms of labor, scientific research, qualifications and necessary qualities of educators, must awaken in them the consciousness to always seek and reach for good things in life; students must be educated of revolutionary morality through the ideology and the revolutionary life of Ho Chi Minh 4.1.2 Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of students in associated with building a healthy socio-economic environment First, step by step build and perfect institutions of the socialistoriented market economy Second, family, school and society must be closely combined in educating Ho Chi Minh moral ideology and developing student personality 19 4.1.3 Educating Ho Chi Minh moral ideology in order to contribute to the formation and development of student personality in associated with the strategy of developing new, modern and comprehensively developed intellectuals and workers The role and responsibility of the youth and students must be developed comprehensively, in terms of both physical and spiritual development, citizen consciousness and life ideal, competency and skills, life aspiration, ability to master knowledge and integrate to the era in order to form young human resources of high quality to meet the requirements of promoting industrialization and modernization of the country 4.2 Main solutions to promote the role of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in personality formation and development of Vietnamese students today 4.2.1 Promoting propagation to raise awareness of the role and responsibility of subjects in Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in order to form and develop the personality of Vietnamese students today There should be synchronous and closely guidance and direction from the central government to Ministry of Education and Training as well as universities and colleges In which: Ministry of Education and Training, universities and colleges should consider the promotion of moral education and education of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology; set up specific programs and actions for schools to implement Party committees, School Administration Boards should set up specific guidelines and solutions in connection with characteristics and conditions of each school, through activities of Student Affairs Office, Youth Union, Student Union and the mass media; enhance the role and activeness of these organizations in Ho Chi Minh moral 20 ideology education in order to form and develop the personality of Vietnamese students today Lecturers of Ho Chi Minh Ideology and Ethics must also regularly improve their professional skills and cultivate revolutionary morality to become good moral examples for students to follow The harmonious combination between family, school and society is also an important element in improving the effectiveness of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education 4.2.2 Step by step materializing revolutionary moral norms, methods and forms of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education to suit students in the current period - Promote the education of politics, ideology; renovate contents and methods of teaching subjects of Political theory, especially Ho Chi Minh Ideology and Ethics - Well implement the educational principle of "learning together with practicing, education combined with work and production, schools are closely linked to the society" Fight against the “stereotype” teaching style which relies on book quotations and steers away from real life - Effectively promote the role of mass media: radio, television, Internet and the press in educating and fostering Ho Chi Minh moral ideology for students - Initiate the movement of all people preserving and promoting good moral values of the nation and fighting against anti-morality activities in the society, which is an important task in Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in order to develop personality of Vietnamese students today - Promote the movement of "Study and follow Ho Chi Minh’s moral example" In which, "exemplification" is the basic method of 21 education in developing new morality Each teacher must be an example of new ethics for students to follow - Renovate methods and forms of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in order to help students take initiative, be creative and self-learning; transform Ho Chi Minh moral ideology into necessary qualities of students through organizing many kinds of extracurricular activities, outdoor activities, musical activities, contests, picnic activities, regular visits to historical relics, etc 4.2.3 Focus on building a healthy environment of society and school so as to positively affect Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education and conduct a review of Ho Chi Minh moral education for students in order to find out good methods and overcome drawbacks First, create a healthy socio-economic environment in order to promote creativity, activeness, and encourage and persuade each student to understand that in the current situation, if students want to assert themselves and contribute a lot to the country, they must consciously and actively study, are always diligent and creative in study; live bravely, determine to establish themselves, dynamic, dare to face with difficulties and challenges, dare to take responsibility, independent and hard-working However, there is still a large number of students who manifest degradation of morality and lifestyle, get involved in social evils, promote material lifestyle, selfishness, indulgence, snobbishness and thriftlessness; ignore spiritual values, not interested in the community and people around, seldom participate in voluntary and social activities of the community; lead a seclude life, promote individualism and aloofness, etc At the request of the industrialization and modernization of the country, the process of international integration is getting more and more comprehensive and the rapid change of the situation requires the society to guide and help students in changing value system into new values, so that it happens in consistence with objective rules of the history Therein, the education of the Ho Chi Minh moral ideology will be the basis and guideline for orientating educational contents as well as solutions for moral education and student personality It helps each student to self-assess, self-adjust his behavior in accordance with the norms of social morality, contributes to the personality formation and development of Vietnamese students in the new era In order to improve the effectiveness of Ho Chi Minh moral ideology education in the process of personality formation and development of students, it is necessary to synchronize solutions Each of the
