Unit2 : CULTURAL DIVERSITY Date of teaching : 17, 9, 2008 Period:4 Section: Writing Class: 12A6,7,8,9,10 I AiMS AND OBJECTIVES :  Language content: - To introduce some new words relating to the topic. - Describe the typical features of a Vietnamese conical leaf hat - Vocabulary : rim, rib, trap, palm leaf, sew, trim - Structure : The simple present  Language function: + Writing the description of a conical leaf hat. + Skill : Integrated skills : writing II. Warm up T shows a conical leaf hat and asks Ss some questions : + Who usually wears it ? ( school girls/ model/ woman…) + How do they look under the hat ? T introduces the topic: Today we will focus on how to write a description of the conical leaf hat, a symbol of Veitnamese culture. 2 Before writing : - Asks Ss to look at the conical hat and name differentparts of the hat. + rim(n) (picture) : Answer the questions Listen to Unit 2 : CULTURAL DIVERSITY. Period 4: Section : Writing New words 15ms 7ms + rib (n) (picture) + strap(n) (picture) + palm leaf (n) + sew (v)(miming) 3 While writing : _Elicits the outline of a paragraph to describe the conical hat. - Asks Ss to write a description by combining the answers together. Questions : + Why is the conical hat one of the typical features of the Vietnamese cultures ? + What is it made from ? + How are the ribs shaped ? + What size is it ? + What is the form covered ? + How are the leaves sewn ? What is the hat trimmed ? + What is the hat used for ? + How do the girls / women look in the conical leaf hat ? - goes around for help. - Asks Ss to hand in some of the the first papers. - Gives feedback and make comment 4 Post writing. Asks one or two Ss to write their writing on the board Corrects mistakes 5. Consolidation Confirms the content of the lesson. individual copy down Answer the questions Write Write on the board + rim(n) (picture) : + rib (n) (picture) + strap(n) (picture) + palm leaf (n) + sew (v)(miming) Task 1 Task 2 The conical leaf hat is one of the typical symbols of the Vietnamese culture because it cannot be found from anywhere else in the world. The leaf hat is not only a symbol of Vietnamese girls/ women but also part of the spirit of the Vietnamese nation. The hat is made from a special kind of bamboo and young and soft palm leaves. The rims are shaped into conical form. The diameter of the hat is about 40- 45 cm. The form is covered with the palm leaves, which are then sewn into all rims . Finally, the hat is trimmed and painted with a coat of attar oil. The leaf hat is used like an umbrella to protect people from sun or rain. Beneath the broad rims of the leaf hat, the girls and women look pretty and more attractive 4.
