He said he wouldn't talk for too long, and we saw him take his watch off and lay it on the table. I can't remember what he said about smoking because John and I had other things to think about. He finished when the bell rang for break, and the headmaster told us to go out. John happened to slip when he was passing the teacher's table. In the playground John showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked lovely. I was wishing that I'd been the one to slip by the table, because it was a beautiful gold watch. The headmaster came outside then, and the old man was with him. They walked about, looking around and talking all the time. After a bit the bell rang, and we came into our class again. The headmaster said, "I've got a little job for you, boys. This gentleman, our lecturer, has lost his watch in the playground. It has happened before, he says - it just slips off his wrist. So look around for it, will you? See if you are clever enough to find it. The boy who can find it will get a useful reward." Well, of course we all walked about the playground, looking for the watch. And I wasn't surprised at all when John bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past me towards the headmaster and the old man. "Where are you going?" I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. And the next minute John was smiling, handing over the watch to the old man and waiting for a reward. But the old man didn't seem pleased at all. In fact he looked quite angry as if he wanted to put a knife into John's heart. Then both the headmaster and the old man burst out laughing. Later, John said to me that the old man didn't even say "Thank you" when he gave back to him the watch. The thing that made everybody, except me, surprised was that John didn't get any reward. When he reminded the headmaster about it, he said " Well, I will give you a useful reward that you will never forget. Take this sheet of paper and write a long composition on the evils of smoking". Of course John didn't know what to write. 21. What were the two boys thinking about during the lecture? A. They were not thinking about anything B. They were thinking about the evils of smoking C. About the watch - and how to get it, perhaps. D. They thought that the headmaster was very clever. 22. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slipped? A. Because it was a beautiful watch. B. He thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped. C. If that had happened, the watch wouldn't have been lost. D. In that case he wouldn't have given it back to the lecturer. 23. Why did the two men come out to the playground? A. Because that was where the watch was lost B. It was day-time, and they needed some fresh air. C. It was just a lucky chance that they came out mere. D. They came out in order to support the headmaster's story. 24. What was the purpose of the promised reward? A. People who find things must have a reward. B. It was a clever trap of the headmaster to find the watch. C. It was to encourage the boys to find the watch. D. The watch was a valuable one, so a reward was necessary. 25. When John "bent down", what was he trying to do? A. He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch. B. He was trying to hide the fact that he had found the watch C. On rainy Sundays, I stay at home reading books and listening to music. I’m quite happy with my daily activities A historical place in HCM city There are several historcal places in HCM city, among them the Nha Rong what is considered the most famous. It was the very place where Uncle Ho boarded a French merchant ship to go abroad. He was trying to find a plan for national salvation. In the memorial building there, we can see many pictures and souvenirs of our Uncle’s revolutionary life. There are also many historic documents and illustrations about our people’s resistance against the French colonialists and the American imperialists. Around the building is a large garden with many trees and beautiful flowers, which have been brought from different regions of the country. The Nha Rong Wharf is always crowded with people especially young people. They go there to study President Ho’s revolutionary life and our people’s good traditions. My career!(nghề nghiệp) I graduated from University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City / Hong Bang University / Marketing University in 2003 and now I work in Taxation Unit in District (CCTQ3) as an officer. I have worked here for 18 months / since September in 2007. I work here because I want to have a stable job (công việc ổn định). I hope I can put my knowledge into my job (áp dụng kiến thức vào công việc) to it easily and convinent (thuận tiện). I’m allocated jobs (phân công công việc) with checking and storing legal documents, files, preparing a monthly and quarterly report to higher level on my work (báo cáo hàng tháng hàng qúy lên cấp trên). It satifies me that’s why I love my job. A national Hero The are many heroes and heroes in our history, but President Ho is known as one of the most famous. He was the founder of the VN Communist Party, which led the victorious Revolution of 1945. This event brought independence and freedom to our people after nearly 100 years of harsh French domination. But the enemies invaded our country again. They wanted to have our people live in slavery. Once more, under President Ho’s leadership, our people successively defeated he french colonialists and the American imperialists, liberated South VN and reunified the whole country in 1975. President Ho is respected and worshipped by the Vietnamese people. Unesco, a prestigious international organization, has also selected him as a national hero as well as an outstanding writer. Thanks to him, we are now living in the most glorious era in our national history. My experience of learning E I have studied E for years. I can write and speak E fairly well now. From my own experience, i think that if we want to write E correctly, we should master its grammatical rules and enough time reading the E books which suit our level. We can find these graded books in bookshops .As to improving our speaking and listening abilities in E, we should carry out intensive practice by listening to E recordings and radio broadcasts, imitating the native speaker’s voice as frequently as possible. It is also good for us to join an E-speaking club to have the opportunity of speaking E with other people. Above all, the learning of any language requires great effort and patience. If we try hard and work methodically, ai;m sure, we can make good progress in learning E. VN, my beloved homeland My beloved homeland is VN. It is country in South East Asia with a population of over 80 million and a land area of about 330,000 km2. Our country is very rich in natural resources. The subsoil in many regions contains a great quantity of mineral ores and in the immenes forests there are various kinds of valuable trees and wild animals. The Vietnamese coastline very long and beautiful with a large fishing industry. Our nation was established about 4.000 years ago. The Vietnamese people are very intelligent and hard working. Above all, we have a long and heroic history. Our people have defeated foreign invaders many times. Nowadays, Viet Nam is under a socialist regime. There have been great changes in our country in recent years. The standard of living has greatly improved. I love my homeland and feel very proud of it. The advantages and disadvantages of living in the city There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of living in the city. In the city, the houses are supplied with electricity and drinking-water. People go from place very quickly by motorbike, by bus or taxi. Housewives can buy everything they need in shops and supermarkets everywhere. Children study at the schools near their houses. For entertainment, city people can go to theatres and amusement centres. Urban workers always earn more money than the labourers in the countryside. However, the pollution of air, water and noise in the city badly affects people’s health. Traffic accidents and social evils, which are common in the city, also threaten people’s safety and happiness. Young people find it more suitable to live in the city but it is not so good for the old to live there. The problem of overpopulation Overpopulation is a serious problem not only for each family but also for the whole notion. In a large family, the parents cannot earn enough money to provide for their children. The children themselves are not well nourished or well educated. It’s hard for these physically and mentally disadvantaged young people to become qualified citizens to serve their country. Besides, the mothers who have given birth so many times are certainly unluckly in their lives. Our goverment cannot deal with such a serious problem while the country is still underdeveloped. If the population increases uncontrollably, the goverment will not be able to provide enough food, housing, work or education for so many people at the same time. As a result, people’s lives will become worse. To ensure happiness, each married couple should have only children. The traffic problems of HCM city HCM city is the large city in VN. It has a population of million with over million vehicles of all kinds. Moreover, the streets are narrow and in bad condition. Worse still, many people disobey the traffic regulations. Consequently, there are many traffic accidents, which kill and injure hundreds of people every month. Furthermore, there are always traffic jams in the downtown areas during rush hours, which is a terrible waste of time and money for the city people. To solve the above problem, the authorities should have the streets repaired and widened. They should also develop a good system of public transport to reduce the number of motorcycle moving along the streets. Above all, the city people should be educated to obey the traffic rules. I hope that all effective measures, including severe penalties for traffic violations, will be carried out to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
