UNIT 12: MUSIC WRITING (2 periods – 90 minutes) Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Improve their writing skill. - Write a profile based on provided prompts. - Gain more knowledge about the life story of some composers. Teaching Aids: Textbook, CD player, handout, etc. Procedure: Teacher 's activities Students’ activities I. Warm up: (10 minutes) - Invite Ss to join an exciting game: Guessing Game. - Read in turn 4 short profile of 4 singers and composers or musicians and ask Ss to guess who they are. T can provide more details if Ss can’t give out the answers.  Mỹ Tâm: + she was born in Da Nang in 1981. She is a Vietnamese pop singer who archieved fame with such significant songs as “Duong Nhu Ta Da”, “Uoc Gi”, “Niem Tin Chien Thang”. + Show a picture of My Tam. + Play a song of My Tam: Ước Gì.  Trịnh Công Sơn: + He was a famous Vienamese composer, musician and songwriter. He wrote such famous song as “Bien Nho”, “Diem Xua”, “Mot Coi Di Ve” + Show a picture of Trinh Công Sơn. + Play a song of Trịnh Công Sơn: Mot Coi Di Ve  Michael Jackson: He was an American singer and dancer - referred as the King of Pop. He died in 2009. His famous songs includes “Heal the world”, “We are the world”, “Black or White”. + Show a picture of Michael Jackson. + Play a song of Michael Jackson: Heal the world. - Work individually. - Join enthusiastically the game. - Listen carefully to each of 4 profiles. - Raise hand quickly to answer and then receive the present from T. - If Ss cannot answer when hearing the profile, they can see the picture and guess or listen to the song that T plays. - Answer after listen to the profile, S will receive 3 lollipops, after seeing the picture, 2 lollipops, after listen to the song, 1 lollipop. 1  Scott Joplin: He was born in Texas in 1886, into a poor but musical black family. He wrote 50 piano rags, and he was called the King of Ragtime. + Show a picture of Scott Joplin. * Lead: Scott Joplin is a famous American musician and we will know more about him through the lesson to day. Part D: Writing. (Writing a profile). II. Pre-writing: Activity 1: (7minutes) - Ask Ss to close all textbooks. - Glue the extra board onto the board: (enclosed the content in the last page). - Ask Ss to look at the extra board, read carefully and do on 3 minutes. - After 3 minutes, call some students to speak aloud the answers. - Correct the pronunciation mistakes and feedback the answer. Activity 2: (8 minutes) - Ask Ss to review the tense of verb using to write a profile. + Use the verbs in the simple past tense: S + V ed /V 2 … - Review the prepositions and conjunctions using to write a profile if necessary. * in + year (in 1980) * on + day/month/year (on November 15, 1923). * be born + in + place (be born in Dalat). * Conjunctions: All in all, after that, and, etc. Activity 3 (20 minutes): - Ask students to open the textbook and turn on page 129, Task1. - Ask Ss to works in pairs, read carefully Task 1 and follow the instruction. - Go around the class to help if Ss need. - Call some Ss to read aloud the answer. - Correct the pronunciation mistakes and give feedback. - Work individually. - Look at the extra board, read carefully and put the correct word in column B to the sentence in column A. - Ask T when having some new words. - Raise hand and speak aloud the answers. Suggested answer: 1. A 2. E 3. D 4. G 5. B 6. A 7. F - Whole class. - Review the simple past tense. - Listen to the review of prepositions and conjunctions. - Write down into the notebook. - Give some example if T asks. - Work in pairs. - Read carefully Task 1 in the textbook, use the prompts to make up complete sentences about Scott Joplin, a famous American musician. - Do the Task with their partners. - Ask T when having some problems. - Raise hand and read aloud the answers. - Suggested answer: 1. He learnt to play music when he was young. 2. Scott learnt to play works of composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart as well as to compose music. 3. He quickly became famous. 4. His tunes were wonderful mixture of classical European and African beats which was known as Ragtime. 5. All in all he wrote50 piano rags, and was called the King of Ragtime. 6. Scott Joplin died in 1917. III. While-writing: 2 Activity 1: (5 minutes) - Ask Ss to open the text book and turn on page 129, Task 2. - Have Ss find out which verbs or preposition using to write Van Cao’s profile. - Prompt if Ss can’t give the answer. - Ask Ss to pay attention to the tense of verbs again. Activity 2: (20 minutes). - Provide a prompt like Task 1 for student to write easily. - Divide the class to some groups of 3 or 4 Ss, each group has an extra board and a pen brush. - Give Ss 10 minutes to write the life story Van Cao into the extra board. - Go around the class to help Ss if necessary. - After 10 minutes, ask each group change the extra board with other groups to repair together by pencil in 5 minutes. - Collect all extra boards and glue them onto the board. - Ask Ss to look at the extra boards and correct all mistakes of spelling and grammar. The prompt: 1. Van Cao/born/November 15, 1923/Nam Dinh/a poor workers’ family. 2. He/start/compose/music/when/very young. 3. He/write/first song/1939/and quickly/become/famous. 4. 1944/he/write/Tien Quan Ca/our National Anthem. 5. Van Cao/not only/write/songs/poems/but also/draw/paintings. 6. He/die/July 10, 1995. 7. Van Cao/know/as/very talented musician/and/highly/appreciated/the Vietnamese people. III. Post-writing: (15 minutes) - Provide another story of a singer in prompt. - Ask student to write quickly a profile. - After finish, call some students to stand up and read aloud their profile. - Give feedbacks. + Name: Michael Jackson. + Born: August 29, 1958. + Place of birth: Indiana. + Family: an African American working-class family. + Begin his solo career: 1970. + Become famous: 1980. + The best selling album: Thriller. Work individually. - Open the textbook, page 129, Task 2. - Read again Task 1 to find out how to use prepositions, supplements, articles, etc. to answer. + Name: Van Cao. + Born: 15 – 11 – 1923 (be born, on). + Place of birth: Nam Dinh (in). + Family: poor workers. (into). + Start composing music: when very young (be). + First song: 1939, quickly become famous (and, in). + Tien Quan Ca (National Anthem): 1944 (Write, in). + Artistic works: songs, poems, paintings (not only, write, but also, draw). + Died: 10-7-1995 (on). - Work in groups. - Write a paragraph of the story into the extra board based on the prompt. - Ask T when having some troubles. - After finish, change the extra board with another group and correct the mistake of their friends by pencil. - Help T glue the extra board onto the board. - Pay attention to what T correct on the board. - Take note if necessary. - Suggested answer: Van Cao was born in Nam Định on November 15, 1923, into a poor workers’ family. He started composing music when he was very young. He wrote the first song in 1939 and then quickly became famous. Tien Quan Ca, the National Anthem of Vietnam was written by Van Cao in 1944. Van Cao not only wrote songs and poems but also draw paintings. He died on July 10, 1995. Văn Cao is known as a very talented musician and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese people. - Work individually. - Look at the story of the singer that T provides. - Write quickly a profile. - Raise hand and read aloud the profile in front of the class. Suggested answer: Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Indiana, into an African American working-class family. He began his solo career in 1970 and became famous in 1980. Thriller was his best selling album. He died on June 25, 2009. 3 + Died: June 25, 2009 IV. Review and Homework: (5 minutes) - Ask Ss to review what they have just learnt. - Write the homework on the board. - Review a little about how to write a life story of a famous person (tense, preposition, etc.) - Write down the homework into the notebook to do at home: Write about the life story of 1 composer that you know (name, born, place of birth, works, died, etc.) - Prepare the next lesson.
