Part 2 Describe an important choice you had to make in your life. Well, frankly speaking, there have been numerous decisions that I have made during the course of my life, however the one that I think should be mentioned is the decision made when I stood in-between two choices: either studying at home, or studying abroad. As you might know, studying abroad, especially in countries such as The UK or US provides so many precious opportunities. Not only the education systems in these countries are of the best standard and their certificates are globally recognized, but the employment rate there is high as well. That is not to mention the substantial amount of salary I could get, if I were to get the best results, obviously. However, every coin has two sides, the drawbacks of choosing to study abroad is that I will be studying in a completely new country that is totally different from where I come from. Novel situations might occur that I have never encountered before, for instance cultural shock, or other security-related issues, including racism. Although I can learn how to face and deal with challenges, but still, I think it is a very risky choice to study in a distant continent. At the end, I chose to stay in Vietnam, partly because of my family. And you know, there’s no place like home. Here, despite of the low quality education system, I still have a chance to meet and greet new friends that share the same culture with me, and another crucial reason for it is because of the amount of money I can save from not living & studying abroad. So far, I think it is not necessarily the best choice, but the most practical one. And if you ask me, I would say that I’m reasonably content with it… Part 3 - What are the typical choices people make at different stages of their lives? As you can probably see, people tend to make different types of decision at each particular part of their lives. At an early age, they often make simple ones such as how to deal with problems arisen from classes, since they would all go to school. Then, when they become adults, at the age of 18, I think the most typical choice is whether or not to proceed with further education. For me it is a crucially important choice. Afterwards I think most of the decisions are on how to deal with relationships as well as what to do with their career. As those are the two factors that dictate and follow throughout a person’s entire lifetime. - Should important choices be made by parents rather than by young adults? I think most of the time, young adults must be given the permission to make decisions, especially when it comes to those that could shape their lives, or at least have a significant impact on them such as going to university or studying abroad. This is considered to be one of the most fundamental rights that a fully developed adult should be provided with. However, I should emphasize that it is extremely important that he/she should take in to consideration the opinions of parents as well, since they are much older and, thus, should probably be much more experienced as well. With that, I suggest decisions made in the light of opinions and advice taken from parents should be better in the long term. - Why do some people like to discuss choices with other people? I think this is the matter of personality really, since it is entirely up to them to either share and discuss their plans with the others, or keep it to themselves as a personal secret. If you pay more attention, you can actually realize that people who are outgoing and open-minded often decide to discuss their problems with others, in order to find the best solution by brainstorming. The others who decide not to, are often introverts and are quite opposite from the ones I have mentioned. If you ask me, then I’d say that I prefer sharing my plans with the others, since I am not the only one who could come up with the best idea amongst all the people that I know. Here's my sample (band 9) answer: I’m going to talk about an interesting conversation that I had a couple of weeks ago in a music shop. I was walking along one of the main shopping streets in the city centre, when a large window displaying all sorts of musical instruments caught my eye. Out of curiosity, I decided to go in and have a look around. The person I ended up speaking to was a shop assistant on the second floor, in the area of the shop dedicated to acoustic guitars. I hadn’t intended to speak to anyone, but the assistant approached me in a friendly way and asked whether I had any questions. I explained to the assistant that I hadn’t played the guitar for years, but that I wondered what the differences were between the various acoustic guitars on show. He talked to me about the different makes and models, whether they were factory or hand made, the woods and varnishes used, the variation in sound quality, and of course the price range. I found the conversation fascinating because the shop assistant was so knowledgeable. It was obvious that he had a passion for the guitar, and he didn’t mind talking to me even though I had made it clear that I didn’t intend to buy anything. First of all, I would love my child unconditionally. What I mean is that I realize my child is not perfect, but I will still love him/her even if s/he has made a mistake. Secondly, I would like to be known as a strict but fair parent. For example, I will not allow my child too many freedoms, but I will also try to understand his/her needs. 5. What hopes or fears do you have concerning your children? • That’s an interesting question. Firstly, I fear that my children will have a very hard life. For example, I wonder if they will have jobs to do. Secondly, I hope that they will be happy. For example, I hope that they will find a good spouse, have children, and live together in peace and love. 5. What type of culture do you want your child to grow up in? • This’s a little bit difficult question. To me, I would like my child to grow up in a culture of love. What I mean to say is that I hope the circumstances in our home will be full of love and understanding. After that, I hope my child will grow up in a culture where the finer things in life are important. For example, things like music, art, and study should be part of his life from the beginning. 6. Are you going to bring your children up differently from the way you were brought up? Why? I don’t think so. I believe my parents raised me well, and gave me a good education. If I could do the same for my child, I would be happy. Maybe I would be a bit more modern. For example, I believe my parents were unreasonably strict at times. I would try and keep a balance between discipline and freedom.
