In the end, the manager phoned hotels in the town and found rooms for everyone but in four different hotels. THE GREATEST BRIDGE IN THE WORLD Verrazano, an Indian about whom little is known, sailed into New York harbour in 1524 and named it Angouleme. He described it as "a very agreeable situation located within two small hills in the midst of which flowed a great river". Though Verrazano is by no means considered to be a great explorer, his name will probably remain immortal, for on November 21st, 1964, the greatest bridge in the world was named after him. The Verrazano Bridge , which was designed by Othmar Amman, joins Brooklyn to Staten Island. It has a span of 4260 feet. The bridge was so long that the shape of the earth had to be taken into account by its designer. Two great towers support four huge cables. The towers are built on immerse underwater platforms made of steel and concrete. The platforms extend to a depth of over 100 feet under the sea. These alone took sixteen months to build. Above the surface of the water, the towers rise to a height of nearly 700 feet. They support the cables from which the bridge has been suspended. Each of the four cables contains 26,108 lengths of wire. It has been estimated that if the bridge were packed with cars, it would still only be carrying a third of its total capacity. However, size and strength are not the only important things about this bridge. Despite its immensity, it is both simple and elegant, fulfilling its designer's dream to create "an enormous object drawn as faintly as possible". 46. The Verrazano bridge was built with so wide a span because A. it had to cover a wide stretch of water B. of the unusual shape of the earth around Brooklyn and Staten Island C. the water that lies between Brooklyn and Staten island is very deep D. the number of wires in each cable is so great 47. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Great Pyramid of Giza was a monument of wisdom and prophecy built as a tomb for Pharaoh Cheops in 2720 EC. Despite its antiquity, certain aspects of its construction make it one of the truly great wonders of the world. The thirteen-acre. structure near the Nile River is a solid mass of stone blocks covered with limestone. Inside are the number of hidden passageways and the burial chamber for the pharaoh. It is the largest single structure in the world. The four sides of the pyramid are aligned almost exactly on true north, south, east and west - an incredible engineering feat. The ancient Egyptians were sun worshipers and great astronomers, so computations for the Great Pyramid were based on astronomical observations. Explorations and detailed examinations of the base of the structure reveal many interesting lines. Further scientific study indicates that these represent a type of timeline of events - past, present, and future. Many of the events have been interpreted and found to coincide with known facts of the past. Others are prophesied of future generations and are currently under investigation. Many believe that pyramids have supernatural powers and this one is no exception. Some researchers even associate it with extraterrestrial being of the ancient past. Was this superstructure made by ordinary being, or one built by a race far superior to any known today? 46. What has research of the base revealed? A. There are cracks in the foundation. B.
