Academic listening test (4 sections, 30 minutes, 40 questions) 2. Academic reading test (3 reading passages, 60 minutes, 40 questions) 3. Academic Writing test (2 different writing tasks , 60 minutes) 4. Academic speaking test (3 separate parts – 3 different speaking tasks ,10 – 15 minutes) How to improve listening skill?  "We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard as talking." How to listen? IELTS listening format  Section 1: A conversation between two speakers in a social or semi-official context.  Section 2: A talk by a single speaker based on a non-academic situation.  Section 3: A conversation with up to four speakers based on academic topics or course- related situations.  Section 4: A university-style lecture or talk. Difficulties in listening  Feel hard to understand every word because of conversation speed > worry and stress.  Find it hard to keep up with all of the information coming their way.  Get very tired during long listening So what to do?  Listen to something you enjoy and listen whenever you can.  Listen for the main ideas.  Listen for specific information.  Identify stresses and reductions ->Guess answers.  Get meaning from context.  Improve your pronunciation first.  Learn primarily with your ears rather than you eyes > Remember what you see is not what they say My experience in Singapore  Listen to English songs, news…. you like everyday.  Listen to radio, internet, movies, television If fine, listen attentively; if not, just listen relaxingly.  Listen to different fields (news, arts, society, sports, )  Listen to English as much as possible.  Use resources available: internet, tapes, CDs, movies,. Copy files to computers, ipods, mp3, mp4, phone to listen at home, on travel…and everywhere you can.  Set a goal when listening or talking. > Remember “Failure is mother of success”. Allow yourselves to make mistakes. Don’t worry! Let’s listen.
