LESSON PLAN 1 Unit 12: THE ASIAN GAMES Section: Writing  Class: 11/ 4  Teacher in charge: Hoang Viet Hien Huong Thuy Upper Secondary School  Time allotted: 45 minutes  Aims: to help students practice writing skill  Objectives: by the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: - write a paragraph to describe the preparation for The Asian Games - use the connectors suitably and correctly  Lexical items: upgrade (v), widen (v), promote (v), recruit (v), official (adj)  Teaching aids: blackboard, textbook, posters, pictures, etc. Procedure:  Warm-up: Game: Hangman (3’) - Teacher gives instructions: “First, I would like to divide you into 2 teams: Team A and team B. Now I have one word in my mind. It has eight letters. Each team will in turn say out any word in the alphabet. If your word is correct, I will put it in the position, but if you guess wrong letters, I will start to draw a hangman. Which team can guess the word before I finish the hangman first will be the winner.” (Key: FACILITY) - Teacher checks students’ understanding about the instruction: + “How many letters are there in my word?” (Expected answer: eight) + “What will I do if you guess wrong letters?” (Expected answer: start to draw a hangman) - Get students to play the game - Give feedback  Lead-in: (2’) - Ask Ss: “What facilities do you think we need to have for the Asian Games?” - Brainstorm Ss’ ideas and copy them on the board. (Expected answer: National stadium/ local stadium, National sport centre, Training areas, Sport buildings and roads to sport buildings, Car parks, Hotels, Guesthouses, Facilities for disable athletes, etc) - Ask Ss: “Suppose Vietnam is going to hold the coming Asian Games. What facilities does our country need to have?” - Lead-in: “To go to the details, today we are going to write a paragraph to describe the preparations for the Games”. - Teacher writes the title on the B.B: Unit 12: THE ASIAN GAMES  Stage 1: Pre-writing (12 minutes) • Pre-teach vocabulary (7’) - Teacher elicits and presents new words  Recruit (v): “How do you say “tuyển chọn” in English?” (translation)  Upgrade (v): “Our school now is not in good condition. We have to upgrade to make it better. So, what does the word “upgrade” mean?” (example)  Promote (v): “This word means to help something happen or develop.” (explanation)  Widen (v): “What’s another word for “broaden”?” (synonym)  Official (adj): “How do you say “chính thức” in English?” - Teacher asks students to copy - Teacher checks students’ understanding and memory of the new words: Jumbled words + Teacher asks students to close the book and take out a piece of paper + Teacher shows the poster of the jumble words: DUPGRAE, WIEND, MOTEROP, CRUITER, CIFFOLAI + Teacher asks students to rewrite the words on their paper + Teacher calls some students to go to the board, rewrite and give the meaning of the words + Teacher gives feedback • Matching (5’): - Teacher shows the poster A B 1. build a. the training area 2. upgrade b. one more National Stadium 3. widen c. people to serve the Games 4. equip d. the National Sports Centers 5. advertise e. hotels with modern facilities 6. recruit f. a competition to choose an official song 7. hold g. sports, places, dates and time of The Asian Games - Teacher asks students to work in groups of four to match the verb in the column A to the noun phrase in the column B - Teacher asks 1 -2 students to go to the board to match - Teacher gives feedback  Stage 2: While – writing (23 minutes) • Task 1: (5’) - Teacher sets the situation: “Suppose Viet Nam is going to host the coming Asian Games. What will we have to do to prepare for the Games?” - Teacher gives the hand-out: - Teacher asks students to work in pairs, ask and answer by using the hand-out - Give time for students to do the task - Teacher asks one or two pairs to perform their work A 1. What should we build first? 2. Will we upgrade the National Sports Centers and the local stadiums? 3. Why? 4. What’s about the training areas and the roads to the sports building? 5. What will we equip for the hotels and guests houses with? 6. What’s for? 7. …… B 1. one more National Stadium, some sports building and car parks 2. Yes, we will. 3. not in good condition 4. should be widen 5. the modern facilities 6. to welcome foreign athletes and visitors 7. ……. - Teacher gives feedback • Review: connectors used to signal chronological order (3’) - First, First of all, Firstly, etc - Second, Secondly, Then, After that, Next, etc. - Lastly, Finally, etc. • Task 2: (15’) - T divides class into 4 groups - Teacher asks each group to use the cues in the hand-out to write a paragraph of 100 words about the preparation for The Asian Games. - Teacher gives time for students to do the task - Teacher goes around to monitor and give help if necessary  Stage 3: Post – writing (5 minutes) • Task 3: (4’) - Teacher asks four groups to show their writing on the blackboard. - Teacher gives correction and feedback • Homework: (1’) - Rewrite the paragraph in their notebook. - Prepare for the next class lesson: Language Focus .
