WORKING WITH MONEY A . THE FINANCIAL ADVISOR In my job people either come to me or I go to them. This is because most of my clients are working full time and only have the evenings or weekends free. We usually spend a few hours going through money matters and then I work out with the client how best their money can be invested and how to plan for their retirements. I give advice on anything from pension funds to taking equity out of property. In short what I’m doing is advising people how to make their money work for them and provide them with a secure future.

We mainly deal with small businesses or individuals who need help with their taxes We calculate their profits (or losses) and advise on what expenses they can claim for Some forms they have to complete look quite complex but for people with our experience they’re really quite straightforward Some of our clients think we should be able to save them enormous amounts of money but we’re certainly not miracle workers! D THE ECONOMIST In my opinion the economy is a fascinating subject and I try to pass this on to my students It’s such a wide subject There are so many influences you have to consider and a successful economist must be familiar with all the markets and current trends As we’ve seen recently with unstable stock markets world wide, predicting how an economy is going to is almost impossible because of all the contributory factors Friends often ask for advice on what shares to buy or sell but unfortunately there are no guarantees in my business and it’s always a big risk! Complete the sentences with the correct person A–D _ is a teacher _ thinks his subject is not straightforward _ doesn’t work office hours _ has some clients that not take his advice _ doesn’t always what his clients expect D D A B C PART 3: WRITING (4p) Write a description of one of your neighbours Use the writing guide to help you Paragraph 1: Say who the person is and how you know him/her Paragraph 2: Write about the person’s physical appearance Paragraph 3: Write about this person’s personality Paragraph 4: Write about any special abilities this person may have and say why he/she is an interesting person to know I live in HCM City and accompany my parents in a medium-sized apartment I have a neighbor named Mr Tuan who lives next door to us Mr Tuan is a highly extroverted man with the look of an adventurer He is around six feet in height and loves to be casual always in his attire I have never seen him wearing any formal clothes even when he attends his office But he is cautious about his hair and regularly combs them with a small hair comb which he keeps always in his pocket Moreover, Mr Tuan is fond of kids as he does not have any kids However, he is a jolly person with a deep voice and is helpful too in many aspects I like Mr Tuan much for his benevolence behavior and his extrovert nature He likes meeting newer people and most of the time I see him talking with people whom he has never met before and once he told me that it is a hobby for him to get familiar with the unfamiliar people in his surroundings Besides, he is the person who understands almost every situation and comes to offer help without any conditions He has helped me too in some of the situations and particularly in my study Whenever he comes to visit us, he asks about my study and if I am in trouble with any of my subjects, especially English, he provides me with the directives to study and in some cases makes the texts and issues clear to me Mr Tuan is truly an adorable neighbor Being an extrovert, he inquiries about the problems of the people and supports them after his ability But sometimes he feels shy when he fails to help the vulnerable and I have seen him apologizing carefully to the people whom he could not help for his inability He also takes as much care as possible to his neighbors and after that scheme, he teaches me sometimes my tough subjects like general math, biological science and English I am grateful to him for his unconditional support Moreover, he sends birthday wishes to all of his neighbors and he also has wished me on my last birthday and presented me with a nice binocular He is the perfect neighbor I have ever seen PART 1: GRAMMAR (3p) Complete the sentences with the present perfect simple or continuous form of the verbs in brackets I (have) this cold since I went swimming last Friday How often (you be) to the USA? Something interesting has been happening on the music scene recently Remember the time when you had to be a certain age to be able to get into concerts and clubs and when it seemed you had to wait forever to be old enough to experience the really exciting openair gigs? Teenagers used to spend time and money trying to make themselves look eighteen and many even invested in fake IDs to get past the security guards! Well, it appears that the tables have turned and a new phenomenon has arrived This is keeping the older music fans out and forcing them to try to appear younger or have fake IDs that prove they are under eighteen What is it? It’s the brainchild of Sam Gascoyne, a fifteen-year-old who got fed up with being turned away from concerts and decided to something about it This will be the second year of the extremely popular ‘Underage’ festivals ‘Underage’ started as a nightclub night for youngsters who wanted to listen to bands that are popular today According to Sam, teens today are getting involved in music and the music industry at younger and younger ages and their needs are not being catered for They are no longer content to listen to the type of music nightclubs usually provide for under-eighteen nights They want more cutting edge music The London Underage club nights developed into Underage clubs and the idea spread like wildfire and was copied in towns and cities all over the UK Last year saw the first Underage Music Festival on 10th August in London’s Victoria park It was an amazing event Open only to 14–18 year olds the morning started with a queue of over 2,000 teenagers without a parent in sight! The only adults were the security people and twentysomethings trying to look younger! The festival was well organised and offered the best in indie music It was well equipped to deal with the needs of the adolescent fans: food bars, cash points and lots of security to reassure absent parents that the kids would be safe The whole day was a great success, the teenagers thoroughly enjoying the fact that they had a festival of their very own The ‘Underage’ phenomenon has proved so successful that Sam is now considered by many to be a teen role model He remains unfazed by it all He admits to being annoyed by the increased attention of the music industry He feels very strongly that teenagers are being let down by an industry run by people who are more interested in money than music and who are too old to understand teenage needs He insists that in this technological age young people are more aware of new trends in music than ever before and ingrained attitudes in the industry need to change ARE THE SENTENCES TRUE OR FALSE? In the past only teenagers were allowed into some live concerts T / F Sam Gascoyne turns teenagers away from concerts T / F ‘Underage’ has brought new music to a younger audience T / F The underage festivals only allow one adult with each teenager T / F Some older people attempt to enter these festivals T / F F F T F T PART 3: WRITING (4p) Write an essay with the title: You can never have too much money Use the writing guide to help you Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic and say what you understand by the statement Paragraph 2: Outline points that agree with the statement Paragraph 3: Outline points against the statement Paragraph 4: Summarise and give your opinion Nowadays, money plays an important role in our lives to survive Some people will want to have a lot of money but some people never have too much money And in the next few paragraphs, I will clarify my point of view I completely agree that we never have too much money Humans are greedy, so they will never find that they have enough money for themselves as well as their family Typically, my uncle, when he was poor, he could afford to buy a motorbike, he felt satisfied But when he had a motorcycle, he was hoping to earn more money to buy a car So, money is never enough when we not feel satisfied with our needs On the other hand, many people find that they have a lot of money When we understand that self-satisfaction and feel enough - full, this is the time we can save and spare some money For myself, I usually charity or help the people around me and this is only possible when I feel that I have a lot of money and I am willing to share it with another Although I am not a billionaire when I feel "enough", I will see that I have a lot of money That's why I won't hesitate to donate In short, there is a lot of money or money depending on our ability and ability to satisfy ourselves We should also consider the fact, not all people are the same The usage of money makes it good or bad Thus, money in itself is not good or bad Usage of money makes it good or bad The same money can be used for a good cause Money or any other thing in too much is just a tool PART 1: GRAMMAR (3p) Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets I thought Archie (leave) but in fact he was in the cafeteria Who is expected (win) the next election?
