Tell HOW OFTEN STH IS DONE OR HOW OFTEN SOMEONE DOES STH. Adverbs of frequency can be divided into 2 groups: Definite frequency adverbs: ( every day, annually, twice a week….) Put at the beginning or end of the sentence or clause. Eg: The manager checks the production levels every day. Indefinite frequency adverbs: (always, rarely, usually, never….) A.Affirmative statements 1.Adv + main verb Eg : I usually go to bed at 10 : 00 2.Be + adv Eg: My boss is rarely badtempered. 3.Auxiliary verb + adv + main verb Eg : I have never seen a whale. You can always come and stay with us if you want to. B.Negative statements = 1.Adv(frequently, sometimes, occasionally) + negative auxiliary Eg : I sometimes don’t play tennis on Saturday. 2.Negative Aux + Adv (always, generally, normally, often, regularly, usually) Eg: We don’t always have wine in the evenings Public transport isn’t always very reliable He isn’t usually at the gym. He usually doesn’t go to the gym. 3.Adv (usually, generally, often) can be put before or after the Negative Aux. Eg : I don’t often go swimming C.Questions 1.Adv + verb Eg : How do you usually come school? Do you sometimes have a winter holiday For emphasis: some adverbs can be put at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. Eg: Sometimes we played cards. OR We played cards sometimes. Usually I walk to school. OR I walk to school usually. Don’t say: Never I go to the theatre. Always I have tea in the morning. ( but “always” may occur at the end, but in the sense of “for ever”. Eg: I will love you always.
