1. Advantages and disadvantages of modern life Modern life really brings us both advantages and disadvantages. Together with the striking developing of our society, people live more and more comfortably. In their work, they can use laptops to get information as well as to exchange information easily. In their housework, there are some machines which can help them to do the housework. For their entertainment, there are many kinds of recreation for them to choose. However, they have to work very hard to get money as much as possible so that they can afford for their life’s expenses. In fact, their lifestyle has really been changing a lot. Although they have to spend much time on studying or working, they also find part-time jobs or study extra majors in order to compete with others. In addition, because most of young people are at work all the time, they usually don’t have leisure time at all. They spend most of their time in work or study so that they can get higher promotion. Therefore, have very little time for their entertainment. Sometimes, they don’t even have time for their family. In short, living in a modern life, we will get both good things and bad things. Therefore, I personally think that we should share time for work and entertainment so that we can have enough time to enjoy our colourful and poetic life as well as figure out that our life is more and more meaningful. 2. How do you measure success? In any time, people desire to be successful in their life. Usually, people measure the success of a certain person thanks to his material gains, his position and his happiness. In fact, a person is considered to be successful in life if he has a good job with high salary. That is because the first factor people often measure someone’s success is to consider his properties such as land, house, car and so on. Besides, the second factor is his social position. Someone who gets good knowledge and high social position is usually respected very much because he is one of the successful models in our society nowadays. The last factor to measure someone’s success is his happiness. This is the most important factor because if he has a lot of properties and high social position, but he doesn’t have a happy family with harmonious atmosphere, he is not considered to be successful in life. It’s really true that we must try our best to succeed not only in job and social activities, but also in our family. Someone who is successful in life needs to live in a happy family where each member has to love as well as take care of one another with great and immense affection and responsibility. In short, material gains, position and happiness are really three main factors which can help us to measure someone’s success in our modern life nowadays. 3. What’s your hometown like? Are there any changes compared to the old days? My hometown is . It is one of the provinces located in the eastern of . It is not very big, but it is very beautiful with a lot of rubber-tree forests along the roads. Especially, there are a lot of industrial parks here. In fact, has been developing considerably because it really attracts many foreign investments. It is also a province of a great number of immigrants because a lot of people from other provinces rush to immigrate to Binh Duong to work in some companies in the industrial parks. If someone who lives far away from Binh Duong for a long time and now he comes back to Binh Duong, he will be very surprised with the striking developments in Binh Duong nowadays. In fact, unlike in the past, Binh Duong nowadays has great developments. The infrastructure is very good. Also, the standard of living has been developing day after day. Every day, we can see a lot of cars on the streets with many high buildings along the two sides of the streets. Binh Duong is considered one of the most provinces having high speed of development. In short, Binh Duong, my hometown, is the most beautiful and developing place in the bottom of my heart. Therefore, where I go and whatever I do, I am always thinking about Binh Duong with all my affection. 4. It is generally thought that the only thing people are interested in these days is earning more and more money. Is there any truth in this way of thinking? What else do you think people should be interested in to make their life worth living?With the striking developing of our society nowadays, people are really interested in earning more and more money so that they can afford their family’s expenses in the modern life. In fact, they try all their best to find good jobs with high salary or to seek for extra jobs in order to earn more and more money. It is true that we cannot live happily without money. Therefore, we try all our best to find the best way to earn as much money legally as possible. However, I personally think that, beside money, people should be interested in some other important things such as health, knowledge, and happiness. If our health is not good, it’s very difficult for us to work effectively to earn much money. In addition, when we have a lot of money without knowledge, then our life is not really meaningful. Besides, I think that a happy family with a lot of smiles and love is more precious than money because when lose money, we can get it back. However, when we lose the immense love as well as the harmonious atmosphere in our family, we can hardly get it back. In short, money plays a very important in our life but not all. Therefore, beside money, there are some other precious things which we should be interested in to make our life more and more exciting and meaningful. 5. Never too old to learn Learning is one of the most important things in one’s life, especially for children being educated in schools of different levels. In fact, they must acquire as much knowledge as possible, which can help them know better about the outside world and develop themselves for their future career. As for grown-ups, even the aged, learning is important as well. Although they have studied something for many years, and have learned a lot already, there are still some experiences and laws discovered by our predecessors for them to learn. In addition, the world keeps changing unceasingly. There is always something new for them to learn. Therefore, they must be aware that they should stick to learning throughout their lives. In fact, constant learning can make people become more learned and experienced so that they can suit the changing world better. In short, the proverb “It is never too old to learn” still remains the precious value for each of us. 6. Money cannot buy happiness, but it can help. In our busy daily life, with money we can buy a house, but not a home as well as we can buy a clock, but not time. In fact, if we have much money, we can build a luxurious building, but we cannot buy the warm and comfortable atmosphere in our family. Also, we can buy a good bed with money, but we cannot buy a good sleep. Therefore, it is clear that money cannot buy true love as well as true happiness in our real life, but money is very necessary to us in life. This is only because we live in a materialistic society. In fact, with money we can buy what we need in our busy daily life. In addition, almost everybody knows the value of money because nothing can be bought without money. However, we should use money in doing something helpful. It is better to put money in sound investment than in speculation. Indeed, there is no way to avoid saying that “Money cannot buy happiness, but it can help.” Therefore, we should use our money properly. Those who use it properly will find the way to success because the right use of money may bring us a comfortable life and a cheerful heart. In short, I completely agree with the above saying. 7. To look after the environment is to look after ourselves. Nowadays there are a lot of environment problems affecting our entire world such as acid rain, air pollution, waste water, global warming and ozone depletion. How can we do to protect our world environment? The above environment problems are not only affecting the natural creatures, but they are also seriously affecting our health. In fact, there are some strange diseases such as A/H1N1 and bird flu. Therefore, protecting our world environment is very important. In order to do that well, we have to preserve natural resources: woods, animals, vegetables and pollution because these substances can destroy the ozone and pollute the air, and water resources can change the climate. Health is one major aspect when the global warming can be seen clearly. We must also teach the young generations lessons about the protection of the environment and encourage everybody to take part actively in this task. In short, I completely agree that “To look after the environment is to look after ourselves” because it really reminds us of living with great responsibility towards our lovely environment. 8. “To save time is to save money.” Time is invaluable as each of us is endowed with life only once, and the life span is limited. Therefore, I completely agree with the above proverb. However, I personally think that time is more precious than money because when money is spent, we can earn it back, but when time is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time since each of us recognizes that time is money, so “To save time is to save money.” In fact, it is clear that the time for our study and work is unusually limited. Hence, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As students, we must not relax our efforts to engage in our studies. In reality, there are a lot of students who do not know the importance of time. They spend their precious time smoking, drinking and gambling. They do not realize that wasting time is equal to wasting their money as well as their valuable life. In a word, we should get into the good habit of saving time. Do not put off what we can be done today until tomorrow because laziness will not only bring us failure but also lead us to the road of poverty. 9. People nowadays read less than they used to because of the influence of video and television. There is no way to avoid saying that the influence of video and television has really affected to people’s reading habit considerably. In fact, people nowadays read less than they used to read in the past. For example, instead of reading a long novel or story, they only watch a film on video or television. Not only does this help them save time, but it is also make them feel more interesting because they can see the characters’ actions in the novel or story lively and excitingly. In addition, it is true that films are much more interesting than books because people can see more exciting things such as famous actors and actresses, content, plots and so on. As a result, they feel like something happening in their real life. That is the most important reason why nowadays they read less than they used to read in the past. Besides, with the developing of our society today, people have to work harder and harder to earn more money for their family expenses. Therefore, after a long day working hard, they feel tired and are not eager to read. Instead of reading, they watch television to get information as well as to relax. Their reading habit has really been changing day after day. Consequently, they do not like to read as they used to any longer. In fact, they can quite upgrade their knowledge by watching television or relax by watching video. In short, it is clear that since video and television were discovered, people have not read so much as they used to do in the past any longer. 10. Health is better than wealth. Nowadays, although we are very rich with a lot of money and properties, we cannot enjoy life if our health is not good. Therefore, I completely agree with the saying “health is better than wealth.” In fact, each of us figures out that health plays a very important role in our life. We cannot do anything if we have health problems. In our daily life, there are many rich people, but their health is very poor. Therefore, their life is very terrible in the deep pain. They try all their best to find the good and famous doctors to help them get rid of their sicknesses as well as diseases, but all of their trial is hopeless because they get serious diseases, so all talented doctors have to give up. Nowadays, together with the striking developing of our industrial life, most of young people rush to work with very little rest and relax. They are really workaholic and try all their best to earn as much money as possible, but they don’t recognize that in the future they cannot overcome their illnesses as well as diseases because of their overwork although they have much money. Therefore, it’s very important for us to recognize that health is the most valuable thing in the world. In short, wealth is really less valuable than health, so we are able to discover that being free from sickness is better than being rich. 11. You can’t judge a book by its cover. In our real life, whenever we go to the bookstore and have a quick look at many kinds of books, we are surely attracted by the ones with the most beautiful covers. However, we are not sure whether these books have good contents or not. From the gist of the above saying, we easily infer a very precious lesson in our daily life: We shouldn’t judge a person by his appearance. In fact, the true value of each person cannot be judged by his appearance because there are many people in our life whose appearances are very good-looking luxurious, but their personalities are not really good. Therefore, in communicating with other people in our daily life, we would rather rely on their personalities as well as their behaviors to judge whether they are really good people or not. In addition, we really need a long time to figure out someone in many aspects because some people who are very clever to hide their true bad tempers with their luxurious and good-looking appearance. Therefore, the saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover” is always very valuable for each of us ever and ever. 12. Money can make the world move All of us know that money really plays a very important in our life because without money, we can’t find happiness as well as without money we can't live. However, there are a lot of things in our real life that we cannot have although we have a large number of money. In fact, if we have a lot of money, we can buy happiness and love, but we can't keep happiness and love by money. In reality, there is no way to avoid saying that money can't buy wonderful moment when we are born, the moment when we graduation, or the moment when we marry our sweethearts. Indeed, money can't clear our tears when we cry, can't fill the gap in our hearts. In addition, if we have much money, we can build a luxurious building, but we cannot buy the warm and comfortable atmosphere in our family. Also, we can buy a good bed with money, but we cannot buy a good sleep. Besides, with money we can buy a book, but not knowledge. Moreover, with money we can buy a position, but not respect. Furthermore, with money we can buy blood, but not life. For those reasons, in short, I personally think that money can hardly make the world move. 13. Practice makes perfect. The saying “Practice makes perfect” is really reasonable in any times. Therefore, I completely agree with this for some following reasons. Firstly, the more we practice, the more we get experiences. For example, when we study English, we have so much to learn such as vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading, writing, and grammar. However, if we want to use English fluently and effectively, we need practice almost every day. Otherwise, we just “know” English, but we cannot “use” English in reality. Secondly, when we practice frequently, we can make things perfect more and more. For instance, when we learn speaking of English, if we really want to improve our speaking skill, we should feel free to speak out what we are thinking in our mind although we make mistakes because the more we make mistakes, the more we have chances to get experiences of speaking. As a result, we can surely improve our speaking skill. In short, it is clear that practicing more and more in reality really makes things perfect as well as helps us get more experiences to get successful in our busy daily life. 14. Time lost will never return “Time lost will never return” is really a very valuable saying which I strongly like because of three following reasons. First of all, time is something which we cannot smell, taste, or touch, but we can feel. In fact, since we cannot see and touch time, we cannot keep it. Secondly, time does not wait for anyone, so if we lose time, we will have no chance to get it again. An example of Mr. , my uncle, can clearly illustrate this. During the time of studying in the university, he fell in love with Ms. Nhung, a lovely classmate of his, but he didn’t feel confident enough to express his true feeling to her. So far, they all have graduated from university for three years, Ms. Nhung has already got married and has a chubby son. Therefore, my uncle feels very regretful because he has no opportunity to express his true love to her any longer. Finally, time does not stop in a fixed place. In fact, we cannot find time in the past or the future because yesterday never comes again, and tomorrow has not come yet. There is just time of today-in the present that we are getting. Therefore, we should keep it in the present to prepare something ready for the future. In short, time flies very quickly and never comes back, so we should try our best to learn diligently, to work effectively as well as to live meaningfully like the gist of the saying “Time lost will never return.” 15. A friend in need is a friend indeed. The proverb means that we shall know who our real friends are when we are in need. Those who desert us when we are in difficulty are just unfaithful friends. A true friend would remain with us whether we are rich or poor. Some people befriend the rich, simply for the sake of getting benefits from them. It is useless to have insincere friends because these friends remain with us as long as we are rich or powerful. It is better to have one or two good friends rather than having hundreds of insincere ones. A true friend will stand by us in our trials and tribulations. He will be a great source of consolation and comfort in our troubles. Therefore, we must be careful in choosing our friends. It is difficult too choose a sincere friend overnight; it takes years for us to find a sincere friend. 16. Living to eat or eating to live? Nowadays, with the striking developing of our society, many people become richer and richer. Therefore, they spend their money to enjoy life and their life is “living to eat.” However, there are also a lot of poor people who don’t even have enough money to buy their food every day, so these people think that their life is “eating to live.” In our society, it is true to figure out that there is still the border between the rich and the poor. Therefore, the standard of living as well as the lifestyle are really different. For the poor, they have to try all their best to work to earn money to support themselves and their families. For example, almost all workers in the industrial parks are very workaholic, and they even work overnight to get enough money to support their families. Their life is rather difficult and miserable, so they cannot feel that their life is “living to eat.” On the other hand, for some rich people, their standard of living is very high because they have much money. Consequently, their lifestyle is very luxurious. In fact, they spend a lot of money without worrying about their difficulties in their busy daily life on traveling, entertaining, relaxing and especially they spend their money in some expensive and luxurious restaurants to enjoy gourmet food. Thus, they really feel that their life is “living to eat.” Therefore, everything in our life has two sides. We shouldn’t observe something with only one side. We cannot conclude that there is only one thing “eating to live” or “ living to eat” in our real life. For these reasons, I personally think that it’s better for us to combine them together. It is clear that some people in our society feel that their life is “eating to live”, but the others guess that their life is really “living to eat.” The combination between them is the most perfect in our daily life indeed. 17. Modern Life: Work, Young people, Leisure Time Nowadays, social progress and industrial development has made our life change a lot. In fact, there are many things changing together with modern life such as work, young people and leisure time. Today, almost all young people are always in a hurry. Their lifestyle has really been changing a lot. Although they have to spend much time on studying or working, they also find part-time jobs or study extra majors so that they can compete with others. They themselves think that they have to try all their best to get a lot of achievements to have good jobs with high salary in the future. In addition, because most of young people are at work all the time, they usually don’t have leisure time at all. In fact, they spend most of their time in work or study so that they can get higher promotion. Therefore, they have very little time for their entertainment. Sometimes, they don’t even have time for their family. However, I personally think that it’s not a very good way for them because they should share time for work and entertainment so that they can have time to enjoy life as well as figure out that their life is really more and more meaningful. 18. Fashion - the culture and civilization of a country Fashion is a way of living or doing something in a certain period of time. Fashion appears in all things such as clothes, jewels, cars, mobile phones and hair styles. In addition, fashion is various and diversified in different countries. Therefore, we can find out many interesting things about the culture and civilization of a country thanks to fashion because fashion is really a mirror that can clearly reflect the culture as well as the civilization of a country. In fact, whenever we travel to another country, we can recognize its culture and civilization by observing the clothes and the jewelry that people wear, the cars and the mobile phones that they use as well as their hairstyles, especially on some special celebrations. For example, if we have a chance to travel to on a special day when they organize the ceremony in the pagoda or in the temple, we clearly recognize that the clothes and jewelry that people wore long time ago in the past are very different from those people use nowadays. Therefore, we can easily know that is a country of the diversified culture and the very old civilization. Therefore, there is no way to avoid saying that fashion is considered as a mirror which can clearly reflect the culture as well as the civilization of a country because fashion changes all the time. In fact, a top model of today may be regarded old-fashioned some days latter. Therefore, in order to do the research on the culture and the civilization of a country, we had rather start something from fashion because a country of diversified culture and old civilization ought to be a country of various kinds of fashion from times to times. 19. Tet The most important traditional festival in is Tet. Tet is the time for family reunion in . On this occasion, Vietnamese people always prepare many special kinds of food. In fact, when Tet holidays come, the Vietnamese people welcome the new year with many traditional foods. In my family, my mother and sisters often prepare the foods some days before Tet. The food that I like best is Thòt kho nuoc dua, a well-cooked dish of pork, duck’s eggs, fish sauce, spices and coconut juice. It is very delicious to eat with Banh Tet, a special New Year cake, and Dua chua, pickled vegetables. Banh tet is a traditional cake of the Southern people. It is made of sticky rice, green bean, pork or banana, coconut milk and spices. People have pickled onions, pickled leeks, and pickles of various vegetables. My family also enjoys fruit such as watermelons, custard apples, red dragon fruits, oranges, durians, grapes, grapefruits, and so on. Besides, we also have different kinds of jam such as coconut jam, tomato jam, and gourd jam. Watermelon seeds are also among our favorite foods during Tet holidays. In short, wherever I go and whatever I do, I am always thinking about Tet with all my affection because I strongly like the warm atmosphere of Tet as well as the special and delicious foods of Tet that I might not find all the year round. 20. Travel broadens your knowledge. Nowadays, our society has been developing more and more. Therefore, it would be good for our health if we could get away from our work at least once a year by taking a vacation to a beauty spot in our country because travelling really brings us a lot of benefits. First of all, when travelling we shall have a very good opportunity to meet many people so that we can increase our social communication. Also, travelling might help us enlarge our knowledge of any fields such as customs, cultures, traditions, and so on. For example, when we travel to any countries of native English speaking, we will have a very wonderful opportunity to practice English which we have already studied in , a lacking of English environment country. Therefore, we can apply what we have studied to reality which is a very necessary step in learning a foreign language. Secondly, it is a time for us to forget all difficulties in our busy daily life so that we can surely enjoy our wonderful and poetic life comfortably. As a result, after travelling we will work more effectively as well as feel that our life is more and more meaningful. All in all, it is clear that travelling broadens our knowledge in many fields. As a result, we feel that our life is more and more meaningful so that we strongly have many good motivations to master our knowledge more perfectly day after day in our busy daily life. 21. When you are in , do as the Romans do. Nowadays, the world seems to be smaller because human beings are closer and closer. In fact, with the developing of travelling, it’s easier for us to visit almost all countries all over the world. However, we should find out some customs and cultures of the countries we are going to travel to because if we don’t, we maybe do something wrong in a new place with different cultures and customs. In fact, there is something we can normally do in our place of living, but we really can’t do in another place. The following simple example can clearly illustrate this: In Vietnam, we can normally ask each other about ages, even at the first time we know each other, but this is forbidden in any western countries, especially in . In addition, it’s very important for us to know the taboos of the country we are going to travel to. For example, when we are in , we shouldn’t wear shorts or top whenever we visit pagodas because it is a taboo. Another example is that when we are in , we should put our hands together before our chest and bow our body when we want to greet someone. All in all, the proverb “When you are in , do as the Romans do” is very valuable to everyone of any countries and tribes all over the world. 22. Success came after many failures. In our busy daily life, each of us desires to be successful. Therefore, we all have to try all our best in our daily work so that success can come to us in the near future. However, on the way leading to success, we surely face many difficulties and failures. It is true that all of us are afraid of failures, but we cannot avoid facing failures in our life. Therefore, after getting failures, we shall have more confidence in our thoughts and actions so that during our life, if we face some situations like those, we surely have the experiences to solve this more easily so that we can avoid the same failure which we got in the past. As a result, we will get successful in our life. For someone who does business, if they fail in their work this time, they surely recognize their mistakes in their work. Consequently, they know what experiences, skills as well as knowledge they really need so that they will study more and more. This possibly leads to their success in doing business next time. In short, we must stand up firmly whenever we fall down because of our failures and confidently continue to step on the way we choose since we know clearly that on the way leading to success, there will be a lot of difficulties as the gist in the saying “Success came after many failures” which we really infer through our busy daily life. 23. What is more important to you: “Love before marriage or love after marriage”? With the striking developing of our society nowadays, the viewpoint of love has been changing much in comparison with that in the past. Therefore, the youth has more chances to find out each other’s characters as well as understand each other deeply before their marriage. For this reason, I personally think that love before marriage is more important. In fact, when having love before marriage, it’s very convenient for the couple to understand and sympathize each other. Therefore, they can share each other’s happiness and sadness more easily. In addition, there are usually something wrong about many fields happening in the young couple’s life after marriage, so if they don’t have love before, it’s very difficult for them to sacrifice for each other. As a result, the arguments will easily happen in their daily life. An example of the young couple in my neighborhood can clearly illustrate this. Because of obeying their parents, they became husband and wife without love before their marriage. Consequently, their present life is very miserable because they usually argue to each other. Sometimes, they even fight against each other. In fact, they cannot find any happiness in their daily life. In short, having love before marriage is not only very important to me, but it is important to anyone else as well. 24. What is your dream world? One of my wonderful dreams is about our world with full of wonderful things. In fact, I always dream of the peaceful things in which there will be warm and comfortable atmosphere in any places. In the bottom of my heart, I personally think that human beings all over the world will be happier and friendlier when they live in the world without wars. Besides, I dream about the world in which everybody is equally in any aspects. At that time, the whites and the blacks can have the same opportunities to get anything in our life. In fact, our world will be more wonderful if there is no discrimination all over the world. At that time, people in any tribes can share one another’s happiness and sadness. I am sure that there will be no distance between people of any tribes all over the world. Thirdly, our dream world is also the one with full of the market of labors. One of the striking problems nowadays is that there is not enough work for the labor forces, especially the students who have just graduated from universities. Therefore, I desire that our world will have enough jobs for all graduating students. At that time, the students will try all their best in their study because they know that they surely get jobs after their graduation. In short, I hope that my simple desires about our world, in the bottom of my heart, will become true in the near future so that people all over the world will live equally and happily. 25. “Rolling stones gather no moss.” What do you think about it? With the striking development of our society nowadays, the needs as well as the standards of living have been developing more and more. For that reason, each of us has to try all the best to adapt with the changes of our society. However, on the way to perfect ourselves, we certainly have to face a lot of troubles and difficulties. Normally, there are a lot of stones in our life. They are not usually movable. As a result, moss has a very good opportunity to cling on the surface of the stones. On the other hand, if the stones were able to roll by themselves, there would be no chances for the moss to cling on. Therefore, we can infer a very interesting lesson from this saying. In our busy daily life, there are a lot of bad and evil things happening around and around. Consequently, if we are so lazy that we don’t think and we don’t work, many bad and evil things will have good chances to cling on our body, even our mind. This completely ruins us both physically and mentally. An example of my friend Minh can clearly illustrate this. He is from a high position family with a lot of money. Therefore, he doesn’t want to do anything but spending money on invaluable things. As a result, he is addicted to heroin which really ruins his health and mind a lot. Clearly, it is only because Minh didn’t want to study and work to perfect himself that he has got a very bad result now. All in all, there is no way to avoid saying that we must act, study, work as well as develop ourselves so that we can adapt with the striking development of our society nowadays. That is true for everyone all over the world. Especially, when being students, we must try all our best to perfect ourselves so that we can give our small hands together with a lot of other hands to build up our society more and more developing like the remaining value in the proverb, “Rolling stones gather no moss.” 26. What do you think the world would be like if some day we didn’t have a TV or Internet? One of the most popular means of recreation at home is television. Similarly, Internet is the best mean for us to communicate and get information inside as well as outside our country. Therefore, they play very important roles in our life. In my opinion, our world would be so boring and uncomfortable if we didn’t have a TV or Internet. Firstly, without TV, how would people all over the world relax after long days working very hard in their busy daily life? In fact, TV is one of the most common means for people to relax after working hard, especially people living in the countryside. Therefore, human beings would be very sad and unhappy if there were no TV in their daily life. In addition, TV is the way for people to get the news inside and outside their countries. Consequently, their life would be very boring if they didn’t know what was happening around only because of there weren’t TV. Besides, if there were no means for them to relax to reduce stress in their life with a lot of troubles and difficulties, their health wouldn’t be good. Thus, they couldn’t feel that their life was meaningful, and of course, they couldn’t work more effectively. Secondly, the world’s economy wouldn’t be developed when we didn’t have the Internet. In fact, it is the Internet that helps our world smaller. In addition, almost all information in any aspects we can get from the Internet. Therefore, if we didn’t have the Internet, our life would be boring and uncomfortable because actually now we are used to getting information from the Internet.
