Recently, the social publics have put their interest and raise their concern to numerous violations of business ethics, environment and harm human health at serious level Specifically, in 2008, people in the world were totally shock by the “putting” contaminated items into the milk products by the Chinese companies, which caused death to babies, ill and poisonous condition to many people, the pains suffered by the victims‟ families and the psychological panic to the unsecured, substandard and unhygienic foods by the social communities In 2009, Vedan Vietnam was found guilty as they pumped directly the untreated and poisonous waste into the Thi Vai River for years, which damaged the living and working environment of the agriculture workers and the households living around In 2010, BP was found irresponsible as its spit oil into the Gulf, which caused death to a lot of sea creatures and damaged the sea environment Now, people in the world care more and more about the responsibility of the companies: how they the business, what are the impacts on the environments and how they solve it, what did they to contribute to the society Corporate Social Responsibility – CSR is not a strange term for the developed countries in the world There is a club named “One percent” in the US which is a group of business entities willing to contribute one percent of their annual profit to the social activities funds In France, France Télécom, RATP are examples of the companies raising funds for the French modern arts 1.2 CSR in Vietnam Vietnam is just a developing country, most of the business enterprises are medium size and small size, CSR seem to be a new term then the application and practice of CSR is not in focus However, there are some specific companies has put CSR into their business strategy such as Vinamilk and Dutch Lady launching social program of “6 million cups of milk for poor children throughout Vietnam“ and “Den dom dom Scholarship” 1.3 CSR in Hacinco In values The company built two blocks B3 and B4 in Cau Dien, Hanoi create residential housing for low-income people having difficulties in finding houses The old dormitory has been a potential threat to organizing sports events, cultural and artistic exchange events for the staffs and the students, raising fund for scholarship to poor students, … There is a shortage of housing for colleges and universities students in Hanoi for years The number of the colleges and universities in Hanoi having their own dormitories for students to live in is limited and the rooms supply rarely meets the students living demand Most of the school dormitories are old and last at least 15 years; some of them are one-floor apartments The quality of the rooms and the services provided are rather poor; utility supply systems work inefficiently led to the shortage of water and electric for living Most of the dormitories in Hanoi are built and owned by the colleges and universities under the guidelines and control of the Education Ministry Since the returns in this kind of investment are rather low and it takes a long time to recover the initial outflows, so no private units get interested in these investments So far, there have only been private dormitory projects in Hanoi; one is Hacinco Students Village invested by Hacinco and the other is Thang Long dormitory invested by Thang Long Company However, according to recent research, over half of the rooms which initially open for students to live in now have been sold to the households and private individuals Hacinco Students Village is a social-economic project first established in 2000 and aimed to create housing for students who study at the colleges and universities in Hanoi This is a joint building with main and put into implementation in the globalization business environment context However, in some developing and poor countries, this is a new concept and issue, including Vietnam In order to integrate with the world, Vietnam and other developing countries have to prepare and stay ready to adopt the international rules and standards including CSR reporting and issues The results from the research has shown that the Hacinco social responsibility activities are very important to the company‟s production and business activities and the company image and reputation in the market place and in the whole society So it is suggested that there should be a strong support from the management and improvement of the company staffs in CSR issues Besides that, there is significant impact of the Hacinco social responsibility activities on the social community, such as on the attitude and perception of the company‟s customers and the social responsibility benefit receivers There are some limitations in this research Firstly, there are some doubts about the reliability of the responses since the respondents have different ideas and understanding about the CSR issues Secondly, limitation comes from the sample Hacinco is a large firm with a lot of directors and staffs, the number of their customers and CSR activities benefit receivers are too large to conduct a full survey Thirdly, the scope of the study is rather narrow since the data gathered are mainly descriptive nature and there is a lack of the numerical data from the financial reports of the company In addition, there is a bias on the reliability of 43 the information collected from the company websites May be the company think that it is too sensitive to public the information to the external unrelated parties Due to some limitation of the research, there are some suggestions for other researchers in doing researches on the same or related topics Firstly, other researcher should focus more on other related parties responds to have more attitude and perception to the issues Secondly, as doing the research and analysis, the researchers should pay more attention to the questionnaires and interviews; that is to have more questions to the respondents, provide them some more information and explanation on the issues so we can have more useful and valid answers to be used Thirdly, the company which is chosen to be the main object of the research should provide the researchers useful and reliable information Directors and staffs of the company also need to have a better understanding on the CSR issues as well as the company social responsibility responsibilities activities 44 REFERENCE: http://www.vietnamforumcsr.net/default.aspx?portalid=1&tabid=336&itemid=45 20 [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.vietnamforumcsr.net/default.aspx?portalid=1&tabid=17&itemid=585 [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.vietnamforumcsr.net/default.aspx?portalid=1&tabid=336&itemid=58 44 [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.vietnamforumcsr.net/default.aspx?portalid=1&tabid=336&itemid=46 67 [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.vietnamforumcsr.net/default.aspx?portalid=1&tabid=377&itemid=12 [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.bayvut.com.au/nh%E1%BB%8Bp-s%E1%BB%91ng/tr%C3%A1chnhi%E1%BB%87m-x%C3%A3-h%E1%BB%99i-c%E1%BB%A7-doanhnghi%E1%BB%87p-csr [Accessed 12 October, 2010] http://vietnamnet.vn/giaoduc/vande/2007/09/738053/ [Accessed October, 2010] http://vietbao.vn/Xa-hoi/Ha-Noi-Ky-tuc-xa-SV-bien-thanh-chungcu/70052287/157/ [Accessed October, 2010] http://english.vietnamnet.vn/education/2007/09/738683/ [Accessed October, 2010] http://www.kinhtenongthon.com.vn/Story/xahoi/2010/9/25103.html [Accessed October, 2010] http://hacinco.com.vn/Tintuc/Default.aspx?nn=0 [Accessed October, 2010] Deegan, C., 2009 Financial Accounting Theory 3rd Edition McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd 45 Demacarty, P., 2009 Financial returns of corporate social responsibility, and the moral freedom and responsibility of business leaders Business and Society Review 114(3), pp 393-433 Dierkes,M and Antal, A.B., 1985 The usefulness and use of social reporting information Accounting, Organizations and Society 19(1), pp 29-34 Doane, D., 2002 Market failure: The case for mandatory social and environmental reporting In Presentation at IPPR seminar 2002 Doane, D., 2005 The myth of CSR- The problem with assuming that companies can well while also doing good is that markets don’t really work that way Stanford Social Innovation Review, Graduate School of Business Fall 2005 Elkington, J., 1997 Cannibals with forks: The triple bottom line of 21st Century business Oxford: Capstone Eshleman, A., 2004 Moral responsibility In E.N.Zalta (ed.)
