In translation the form of the source language (the language of the text that is to be translated) is replaced by the form of the target language (the language of the translated text). The purpose of translation is to transfer the meaning of the source language into the target language. This is done by going from the form of the first language to the form of a second language by way of semantic structure. It is meaning which is being transferred and must remain unchanged. Only the form changes. Moreover, translation not only involves understanding the general meaning of the communication, but calls upon the ability to understand the culture of the communication.

Is the author or speaker humorous? serious? sarcastic? emphatic? Is his expression subtle? overt? The hardest part is yet to come in bridging the conceptual gap between two cultures when we try to convey the total massage by way of the concepts and symbols (i.e thoughts and words) of a different language Cultural sensitivity and creativity will be called upon maintaining the style of the total communication Different language often communicate similar meanings via different number of words, different kinds of words, different intonation and pitch, different gestures, etc If we translate / interpret literally, our version may result in a loss of the message In addition to a wealth of general knowledge in relevant subject - areas, the ability to switch cultural contexts and to solve problems of inter - cultural communication, translation and interpretation are specific and complex skills which require the development of particular psycholinguistic strategies While some of these strategies overlap, others differ according to the type of translation or interpretation involved It will be important to distinguish between translation and interpretation, and to be able to identify the particular strategies involved The current trend of actual use of translation methods is: in addition to professional interpreters and translators, translation is also supported by computers and artificial intelligence The topic in my assay is “ Sport” I will translate a newspaper about Vietnamese football form internet : http://thethaovietnam.vn/ and https://vietnamnews.vn/sports A: Answer some questions on theories Question 1: What is the theory of translation ? generally and specifically ? Answer: Translation, by dictionary definition consists of changing from one form to another, to turn into one’s own or another language Basically there are two competing theories of translation In one, the predominant purpose is to express as exactly as possible the full force and meaning of every word and phrase in the original, and in the other the predominant purpose is to produce a result that does not read like a translation at all, but rather moves in its new dress with the same ease as in its native rendering Definitions of Translation Part I: - Translation is basically a change of form - Translation is the replacement of a representation of a text in one language by a representation of an equivalent text in a second language - Translation is rendering a written text into another language in a way that the author intended the text - Translating may be defined as the process of transforming signs or representations into other signs or representations - Translation may be defined as follows: the replacement of textual material in one language by equivalent material in another language Definitions of Translation Part II : - To translate means “to produce a text in a target setting for a target purpose and target addressees in target circumstances" - Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message - Translation leads from a source-language text to a target-language text which is as close an equivalent as possible and presupposes an understanding of the content and style of the original - Translation can be conceived as an integral communicative performance, which without any extratextual additions (notes, explanations etc.) - Translating as a code-switching operation - The ideal translation would be one in which the aim in the target language is equivalence as regards the conceptual content, linguistic form and communicative function of a source-language text Question 2: How translators reproduce the message ? because translation is not simply translating the meaning of a word to word in another language Translation must take into account constraints that include context, the rules of grammarof the two languages, their writing conventions, and their idioms.Translation, when practiced by relatively bilingual individuals but especially when bypersons with limited proficiency in one or both languages, involves a risk of spilling-overof idioms and usages from the source language into the target language On the otherhand, inter-linguistic spillages have also served the useful purpose of 13 importing calquesand loanwords from a source language into a target language that had previously lacked aconcept or a convenient expression for the concept Translators and interpreters,professional as well as
