2.4.2Improvedstoves:reductionofhouseholdsolidfuel air pollution
Priorsituation
Traditionally,three‐stone‐stoveswerethemostcommonlyusedinDouala.Theseconsisted
ofthreestonessurroundingafuelsource,typicallywoodorsawdust.Althoughinexpensive,
thestovescausedsubstantial air pollutionandconsumefuelinefficiently.Inthe
rainyseason,
peopleusuallyhavetocookindoors,orincoveredareasbytheirhouse,exacerbating
exposure.Sawdustandfirewoodwouldalsoincreaseinhumidityatthesetimes,releasing
moresmoke.Therainyseasonalsocausesincreasedcharcoaluse,whichismoreexpensive,
andrequiresadifferentstove.Gasstoveswere
usedbysomeresidents(oftenslightly
wealthier).Whilethesegaveoffnosmoke,theywerethemostexpensive,andthedesigns
usedbymostinDoualapresentedconsiderabledangersofburning.Asummaryofthe
