As the graph shows, the general trend in the USA, Japan, and Holland is downwards. In the best situations pets are fed, cared for and loved as part of a family. It is easy to see how much attention is given to pets, by the range of products available in the pet section of supermarkets. However, there are also negative aspects for the pats. The freedom of both dogs and cats are increasingly restricted. Dogs can no longer run free in the parks and the beach but must be kept on leads. In some countries, cats are kept inside at night to protect native birds and animals. So keeping dogs and cats as pets is a complex thing. More and more the community is intervening to force pet owners restrict the activities and freedom of their pats.
