Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Final Report "Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT" Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Evaluation of time management skill of the rd year students in Faculty of Foreign Language, Ha Noi University of Technology Nguyen The Ky D06-K52 Faculty of Foreign Language Ha Noi University of Technology Abstract Time management skill is very essential to students in their study or in other extracurricular activities, and needs more serious concern The object of the research was to evaluate time management skill of the 3rd year students of FFL-HUT to see if it is good or not, because they have been facing a large amount of time-consuming assignments Data were gathered using two methods: content analysis on requirements of ESP subjects, on relevant materials, and questionnaire survey on selected 3rd year students of FFL-HUT The research showed a big gap in time management of rd year students despite some strong points They realized the importance of time management, took some good steps to control the time better such as planning to study, doing important things first, arranging space to learn…They, however, were attracted to time-wasted things, did not have detailed plans, their time remained illogic arranging…Therefore, students are recommended considering themselves if they were arranging time well or not Further study needs to be conducted to develop a basic model of time management for these student characterized by technicality and foreign language to take full advantage of their strong points and improve their limitations Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Introduction The time is really short while we have so many things to do; however, students in general and students of FOFL HUT in particular seem not to be concerned about this fact Some complained about a large amount of assignments they must complete, others blamed a busy life for taking their precious time They, the 3rd year students in FOFL, just complained instead of themselves evaluating their time management to improve it properly The 3rd year students are focused on as they have already had to study ESP with a large amount of difficult assignments This stage of learning is the beginning of hard-working If they fail to manage the time they will get more stress Therefore, this research was to evaluate their time management skill, it is good or not The importance of this research is that it evaluated the time management of students to help them realize what they have done well, what were their limitations to improve and finally to help them good time managements habit to cope with coming ESP next terms This topic was chose because of the fact that students have poor time management while they have many important things to complete; the research is a good looking glass for students to look into find out themselves To conduct this research, I used two main methods: Content analysis and Questionnaire surveys The first method analyzed existing material related to theories of the time management and explained common reasons why the 3rd year students always feel overwhelmed by their assignments of ESP subjects This method proved really useful as it help research to develop a firm theoretical points and principles From that base, the research can build the valuable points This also helps to point out the requirements of ESP which mean hard-working The second one was used to find out whether the 3rd year students in FOFL have difficulties in study with respect to time management skill, to discover limitations as well as strong points when they manage the time for learning This method brought a lot of benefits It revealed what students have done well, what were their difficulties, what are their limitations in regard to above principles Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Literature review Time management is a very popular concept and is discussed, analyzed in a variety of books, magazines or on online forums due to its necessity in life According to Tracey Carter (2008), time management is the ability to produce and follow a schedule, meet deadlines, prioritize and minimize distractions and unimportant tasks In other word, time management is a set of principles, practices, skills, tools, and systems working together to help one gets more value out of one’s time with the aim of improving the quality of life Much attention is paid on time management thanks to its big benefits one good time manager can obtain To students, when their time is well-managed, they can accomplish important tasks, assignments or homework and what they have done are effective and sufficient Moreover, good time management helps students to get more relaxed, to feel more confident because they no longer are concerned about, no longer are overwhelmed with their tasks at weekends, instead, they can spare more time for fun, for doing a favorite hobby, enjoying time with their friends , or simply resting They are also able to balance study and their own plans or their own social activities, an important thing but challenging to archive With good time management, they can make their period of student life meaningful with a lot of unforgettable experience while are wellprepared for working in future as their parents expect In other word, they can meet their goals both in short and long term However, most students seemingly not improve the way they manage the time despite recognizing the importance to it The reason is that they have no idea about if they are getting troubles with time earlier to respond Therefore, the research points out basic symptoms of poor time managements because if a student is not arranging time wisely, it is reflected in life by the presence of one or more bad conditions He is very stressful and does not have enough time to complete his task He has to try to hand over his assignment on time by working late even at weekends or to play truant and stay at home to finish it It seems exhausted! Also, he is never capable of having his task completed effectively, and result is not very good Another sign of poor time management is being full of discontent One is regrettable about incomplete goals, does not seem to reach any where, and feels he has dropped out one important Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT thing He wishes time could turn back, but it is impossible Most recognizable presence is always wasting time on trivial matters One, of course, can relax and entertain such as chatting, listening music …during studying, but time he spend working accounts for a little amount compared to time he has wasted Students possess a huge amount of time, but have a lot of things left undo It seems unreasonable; however, it is fact Fortunately, many books and magazines in which tips for managing time are recommended are available and prove really useful to students As a student, there are some basic Principles of Time Management that one can apply Identify "Best Time" for Studying: Everyone has high and low periods of attention and concentration Are you a "morning person" or a "night person" Use your power times to study; use the down times for routines such as laundry and errands Study Difficult Subjects First: When you are fresh, you can process information more quickly and save time as a result Use Distributed Learning and Practice: Study in shorter time blocks with short breaks between This keeps you from getting fatigued and "wasting time." This type of studying is efficient because while you are taking a break, the brain is still processing the information Make Sure the Surroundings are Conducive to Studying: This will allow you to reduce distractions which can "waste time." If there are times in the residence halls or your apartment when you know there will be noise and commotion, use that time for mindless tasks Make Room for Entertainment and Relaxation: College is more than studying You need to have a social life, yet, you need to have a balance in your life Make Sure you Have Time to Sleep and Eat Properly: Sleep is often an activity (or lack of activity) that students use as their time management "bank." When they need a few extra hours for studying or socializing, they withdraw a few hours of sleep Doing this makes the time they spend studying less effective because they will need a couple hours of clock time to get an hour of productive time This is not a good way to manage yourself in relation to time Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Methodology This research was conducted through two methods: content analysis and questionnaire survey Questionnaire was designed in form of respondent-completed one, and consists of 11 questions: pre-coded questions, open-ended and attitude scales Objects are the rd year students in FOFL; they were required to tick and write down their answers After being designed, this questionnaire was tested out on a scale of 15 students in one class, and pre-coded questions need to be improved Then, a sample of 40 students was selected at random among third-year classes in the credit program Each of them completed one copy of the questionnaire After collecting necessary information, the researcher analyzed and evaluated the result, plotted information in diagram and explained in the report In the second method, content analysis, checking as well as rearranging data appropriately was done after the researcher had read and analyzed existing material from already-selected sources to get necessary information which plays a role of literature review in the research Then, the researcher drew new theoretical points basing on refined data to support his thesis Next step, the researcher focused on analyzing the requirements of ESP subjects from the course description written in ESP course books All data were arranged systematically in the final report Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL - HUT Results Course requirements for ESP subjects Before the lesson  Students are required to prepare for the lesson by reading the passages, doing homework and tasks that their teachers ask them to  Students are expected to find their materials related to each lesson’s topic to support the lesson During the lesson  Students are expected to take full and active participation in all class activities After the lesson  Students should revise previous lesson regularly  Students are encouraged to keep their own vocabulary book for Electronics and telecommunications terms  Students should search for materials from different sources to develop and consolidate their language skill and their knowledge in the field of Electronics and Telecommunications Addition  Students are required to all homework given by their teachers  Each student is required to write an assignment of about 1500 words in the form of the review or analytical journal of a particular topic covered in the course Evaluation of time management skill of the 3rd year students in FFL -
