Before class begins, install and configure all computers by using the following information and instructions. Computer requirements Instructor computers and student computers require very similar hardware and software. Exceptions for the instructor computer are noted. Hardware The following hardware is the minimum required for the instructor and student computers: ! Pentium II 300 ! PCI 2.1 bus ! 256 MB of RAM ! 4-GB hard disk ! 512-KB L2 cache ! DVD or CD-ROM 12X drive ! Network adapter ! 4-MB video adapter ! SVGA monitor (17 inch) ! Microsoft ® Mouse or compatible pointing device ! Sound card with headphones or speakers ! Internet access ! Projection display device that supports SVGA 800x600, 256 colors (Instructor computer only) Software The following software is required for all computers, except where noted: ! Microsoft Windows ® 2000 Server ! Microsoft SQL Server ™ 7.0, Standard Edition ! Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 1 ! Microsoft Visual Studio ® 6.0, Professional or Enterprise Edition • Visual InterDev ® 6.0 ! MSDN ™ Library ! Visual Studio Service Pack 3 ! PowerPoint ® Viewer 97 (instructor computer only) 2 Classroom Setup Guide Classroom Configuration The following configuration and naming conventions are used throughout this course and are required for the hands-on labs. If you anticipate naming conflicts with other computers in other classrooms you may modify or replace this scheme with one that is better suited to your situation. ! The instructor computer is named Instructor. ! The student computers are named Studentxx where xx represents a number between 01 and the number of computers in the classroom. If DHCP is available, then allow DHCP to assign dynamic IP addresses. If IP addresses must be statically assigned, then use the following table to assign IP addresses. In the IP addresses, x is the classroom number. Classroom Setup Guide 3 Setup Instructions Use the following procedures to prepare each computer for class. Before you begin You will need to do the following: ! Read through all setup procedures. ! Make sure that you have the Trainer Materials CD that is provided with the course materials. Estimated time to set up the classroom: 7 hours 4 Classroom Setup Guide Instructor and Student Computer Setup Use the following instructions to set up classroom computers. ! To set up the hardware 1. Set up the hardware according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (Refer to the hardware requirements.) 2. Configure the hard drive with a single primary DOS partition, using the FAT32 file system. Assign drive letter C to the primary DOS partition. 3. Format the hard drive. ! To install Windows 2000 Server To speed up this installation, run SMARTDrive 5.0 or higher, (smartdrv.exe), a utility which ships with Microsoft MS-DOS version 6.22, prior to running the Windows 2000 Server setup program. 1. Insert the disc containing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server into the CD- ROM drive. 2. If the setup program starts, skip to step 5. 3. Open an MS-DOS command prompt window. 4. Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, type winnt , and then press Enter. Windows 2000 Server files will be copied to the hard disk. 5. Follow the prompts to install Windows 2000 Server. Use the parameters provided in the following table. Respond to all other installation prompts with defaults or with information appropriate for your computer or location. When this information is required Use Partition Install to drive C: Use FAT32 file system or convert to NTFS. Name Your name Organization Your organization Computer name Instructor for the instructor computer Studentxx for the student computers Administrator account password Leave blank Select components Accept the default. Installing networking option Typical Workgroup or domain Accept the default 6. After restart, you may close the Configure Your Server dialog. Test the Instructor computer's audio output to verify that Windows 2000 properly installed the correct driver for your audio card. If it did not install the correct driver then retry installing it manually. Tip Im portant Classroom Setup Guide 5 ! To configure display settings (instructor computer only) 1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab. 2. Use the slider to configure the screen area to 800x600 pixels. 3. Click OK, and then click OK again in the Display Properties dialog box. Click Yes in the Monitor Settings dialog box to keep the new settings. ! To configure file-viewing settings Set the folder options to show operating system files and hidden files. 1. Open My Computer, select Tools, and then select Folder Options. Select the View tab. a. Click Show hidden files and folders under the Hidden files and folders branch. b. Clear Hide file extensions for known file types. c. Clear Hide protected operating system files. In the Warning dialog box, click Yes to display the files. d. Click OK to close the Folder Options dialog box. ! To install SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition Before installing, note the following installation points: ! Use the Standard Edition. ! Perform a local install. ! In the Services Accounts dialog box, leave the password blank. ! After SQL is installed, test that MSSQLServer service is started and set to start automatically. 1. Run the SQL Server 7.0 setup executable. 2. In the opening dialog box, select Install SQL Server 7.0 Components. 3. In the Install SQL Server 7.0 Components dialog box, select the Database Server - Standard Edition install option. 4. In the Select Install Method dialog box, accept the default Local Install option, and then click Next. 5. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next. 6. In the Software License Agreement dialog box, click Yes if you accept the terms of the license agreement. 7. In the User Information dialog box, verify that the information is correct, and then click Next. 8. In the Setup dialog box, enter a valid CD key and then click OK. In the Setup product ID confirmation message box, click OK again. 9. In the Setup Type dialog box, click Typical. Accept the default installation locations, and then click Next. 10. In the Services Accounts dialog box, accept the default settings, leave the password blank, and then click Next. 11. In the Start Copying Files dialog box, click Next. 6 Classroom Setup Guide 12. Accept the default settings in the Choose Licensing Mode dialog box and click Continue. In the Per Server Licensing dialog box, if you agree to the terms of the license agreement then click I agree that: and then click OK 13. Some installations may ask you to enter the number of users. If this occurs, add 25 users to your server. Depending on which CD you use to install — MSDN or the retail version of SQL 7.0 — you may see a Choose licensing mode dialog box at this point. If this dialog box appears, click Add licenses, and then change the quantity to 25. 14. After setup is done installing files, click Finish. 15. Exit the SQL Server 7.0 setup application. ! Install Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 1 • Run the Service Pack setup executable. Proceed with a default installation. ! To install and configure Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Perform a custom installation. Install Visual InterDev and MSDN Library resources as described below. 1. Run the Visual Studio 6.0 setup executable file. 2. Fill in appropriate information in the End User License Agreement and in the Product Number and User ID dialog boxes. 3. Use system-supplied defaults in the Server Setup Options and Installation location dialog boxes. 4. In the Welcome dialog box, click Continue. 5. In the Product ID confirmation message box, click OK. 6. Click the Custom setup option. The only required component is Microsoft Visual InterDev. 7. Installation of all other default components is optional, including Visual C++ ® , Visual SourceSafe ™ and Visual FoxPro ® . 8. Proceed with installation accepting defaults. When prompted, click Restart Windows. 9. After the computer restarts, and after logging on to Windows, the Install MSDN dialog box appears. Installation of MSDN Library is optional but highly recommended. a. When prompted, insert the MSDN CD into your CD_ROM drive, and then click Next. b. Choose a Custom installation of MSDN Library. c. Select the check boxes next to Full Text Search Index, VS Shared Documentation and VID Documentation, and then click Continue. 10. Installation of Visual Studio continues at the Server Setups dialog box. Server setups are not required. Click Next.
