THUONGMAI UNIVE ENGLISH DEPARTM GRADUATION P A STUDY ON DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS OF TRANSLATING COMPLEX SENTENCES IN ENGLISH ECONOMIC NEW Hanoi, 2020 HÀ NỘI - 2015 ABSTRACT Translation is a new subject for the students of English majors at Thuongmai University There are two forms of translation: written translation and spoken translation Written translation is taught for the students of English faculty from the beginning of the third year Because translation is still new and strange for their first time learning, most of the English major students still have difficulties in learning this kind of subject This study was conducted to find out the students’ difficulties in translating complex sentences in English Economic newspapers as well as their expectations when they begin to learn written translation to make suggestions that can partly help them overcome these obstacles in studying this course Besides that, the study also aims at making some suggestions as a useful reference helping adjust the learning method to get a better result in the learning process The research methods used in this study are the questionnaire- a list of questions to find out the difficulties that students usually face We hope that this research can help the translators to have many experiences and knowledge Thank you for reading this research ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS To complete this study, besides our effort, we have also received a lot of support from many people We would like to express my sincere thanks to all those people who are always willing to help us during the time of conducting this study First of all, we would like to express my greatest appreciation to our first supervisor Nguyen Thuy Linh MA, for her patience in providing continuous guidance, suggestions, and supports during our consultations for this study She always encouraged us and gave us a lot of advice and experiences to make our study more perfect But for her help, we certainly have difficulties in completing this study Secondly, I would like to thank all the teachers of the English Faculty who helped us to improve our skills in translation Thanks to their teaching, we gain a lot of knowledge of translation and other fields Last but not least, I express highly appreciation of our friends in English faculty for helping us complete our research We hope that our study will be useful for anyone reading this study Hanoi, April 2020 Student Pham Thi Thuy Hang TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES LIST OF ABBREVIATION TL SL Target language Source language CHAPTER 1: OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY 1.1 Rationale No one can deny the importance of language in the process of conveying information And language plays an indispensable role in people’s life and social development, especially English English can be seen as the second language that all people around the world can use to exchange ideas with each other in order to meet the demand of the global standards in today’s world The role of English is more and more asserted in the booming age of information and technology Today, when every country from the world overcomes the consequences of the economic crisis and has a problem with a large amount of unemployment, every person needs to push his career award Its knowledge can get one’s dream job in any international company, earn more money, and so on However, just knowing English is not enough Sometimes, a person who can speak, listen and read English does not mean he or she understands it carefully One more problem that we have to face here is the necessity of translating skills When Vietnam has entered the integration period, it has more and more requirements for Vietnamese people especially students to have expert translation skills Nowadays, more and more contracts, emails, or newspapers are in English, so it is necessary to master translation to translate documents exactly in order to avoid regrettable misunderstanding As learners, the researchers assume that all learners who begin to study written translation will meet many difficulties, there is no exception for students majoring in Thuongmai University, especially, when students have faced English Economic newspapers which have many complex sentences This is the reason we carry out this research with the hope that the study will be a useful reference helping improve translation skills as well as handle the students’ difficulties when translating complex 1.2 sentences in English Economic newspapers to get the best result Previous studies About “difficulties of translation of learners”, I found many research Firstly, it is “Common mistakes in learning translation subject by the second-year English major at Dong Thap University” of Duong Thi Thuy Hang and Nguyen Thi Cam Xuyen The thesis was divided into four main chapters The literature review was on basis concepts such as translation, the importance of translation, the factors influencing translation process and common errors in Vietnamese – English translation The research methods included research questions, research participants, research procedures and data collection instruments Chapter three had identified and analyzed the collected results and found the causes of those errors Chapter four gave some suggestions to help learners avoid those errors The translation was a complicated process, it was suggested that the students had to focus on their ways of self-study and applying the strategies for translation as much as possible so that they would find their suitable ways for learning translation effectively The study showed that “It will be easier and smoother in their VietnameseEnglish translating if the students take the time to study carefully the source language text, to write an analysis of it and then to look for the equivalent way in which the same message is expressed naturally in the receptor language.” This study indicated that the major of students have common mistakes in learning translation subject The next study is “English majored students’ difficulties and expectations in learning written translation at Dong Thap University”, written by Nguyen Thi Hong Tham, Bui Thi Huyen Tran This research showed the importance of translation For those reasons, the translator plays an important role as a bilingual or multi-lingual cross-cultural transmitter of culture and idea by attempting to transfer the text as faithfully and accurately as possible This research had types of translation, strategies, some useful techniques, the factors influencing the translation process and common errors in written translation Its methodology included research questions, research participants, data collection instruments and research procedures Then, the researchers were able to obtain a general view of the virtual situation and give possible suggestions to help the students of English major when learning translation In conclusion, this study showed the major students have difficulties and expectations in learning written translation at Dong Thap University Lastly, it is “Unnaturalness in English- Vietnamese translation: causes and cures” of Le Phuong Lan This study defined unnaturalness in translation, classification of mistakes that caused unnaturalness Two aspects caused unnaturalness, including linguistic and cultural The linguistic aspect had word level, phrase level, sentence level and linguistic untranslatability The cultural aspect had the translation of idioms and fixed expressions, translation of implications and classic references, cultural untranslatability The research showed the causes of unnaturalness translation and gave translation techniques to avoid unnaturalness From this research, the readers in general and the translators, in particular, had an overview of the contemporary situation of Vietnamese translated works, its strengths and limitations, and how to improve it More importantly, this study focuses unnaturalness of causes and how to improve it Research topic on issues “complex sentences” have been studied by many different researchers around the world Firstly, it is “To Translate and Adapt a text with Long Sentences With Focus on Readability”, written by Anna Nyqvist This study was to analyze how an academic text with long sentences can be adapted for a larger target reader group, when translating from English to Swedish through aspects: sentence structure, noun phrases, connectors This study used complex sentences in the source text, one sentence has become two in the target text The corresponding sentences from the target text were analyzed and discussed based on these aspects To sum up, the aim of this paper was first, to translate and adapt a text with long sentences for new readers and make it more readable, and second, to analyse the strategies used to this Secondly, Juan Zou was at Hubei University, Wuhan, China with the study “On the Translation of Long and Complex English Sentences” This study was on the translation of Long and complex sentences from English into Chinese There were several points The definition of long and complex sentences mainly refers to three kinds of compounds; paralleling long sentence, which consists of two or more clauses with complete sentence structure and without affiliation; compound long sentence, which comprises a principal clause and some other sub-clauses like noun clauses, attributive clauses, adverbial clause, etc; and paralleling and compound long sentence, which as the name implies, the most complicated with the features of the previous two types of long sentences The feature of long complex English sentences which includes many clauses, intricate grammar structure, and numerous prepositional phrases Reason analysis on the difficulties of long complex English sentences which proceeding from cultural factors, different language family, and different language style Specifically, they had taken a concrete look at the contents of language disparity, covering from words translation, translation unit, sentence order, and translation of linking words Also, we took a touch on the two different language structures, like the seven sentence structure pattern, Chinese grammar theory Besides, some knowledge about translation theory is dispensable By and large, this research showed that some difficulties in translating long and complex senctences and some methods to translate it Another study is “Logical and linguistic strategies for translating complex sentences in literary texts of natural languages”, done by Tatiana V Emets, Iuliia V Baryshnikova, Alexey Yu Trutnev, Elena V Suvorova, and Tatiana L Akhmetzyanova This research was a more holistic view of inferences in German and Russian both as a logical category and in a logical-linguistic aspect of complex sentences The researchers analyzed the material of German language at the logical level and the linguistic level and provided three models for constructing complex sentences This study was logical and linguistic strategies for translating from German to Russian Complex sentences, representing inferences, were left translated by the translators or were translated arbitrarily This happens if: the original sentence expressing an inference was not translated completely, that was, either a minor premise (a conditional clause) or a conclusion (a principal clause) was eliminated during translation, therefore one judgment corresponds to the German inference in Russian; or while retaining the general meaning of the statement in the translated equivalent, the semantic causative-consecutive dependence that characterized the original text was lost Complex sentences, serving to express inferences in the German language, were most susceptible to change in the translation process at the syntactic level: a wide variety of complex syntactic constructions of the Russian language correspond to the German complex sentence The possibility to transform complex sentences during translation was primarily explained by the synonymy of these constructions, which were considered as linguistic variants that serve to express one logical-semantic invariant, that was, the causative-consecutive relations that underlie inferences The use of various syntactic constructions in translation was permissible if a change in the syntactic structure did not lead to a change in semantics But in most instances, the syntactic form of the original text was retained 10 original text due to the wrong translation of tenses As it can be seen, most participants (40%) chose sentence C Answer A is wrong about vocabulary, and 36% of participants chose A On the other hand, 14% of the students chose answer B, they translated word-for-word so the sentence becomes obscure, more cumbersome especially complex sentences Only 10% of them has a fault of grammar when they selected sentence D This result shows that most people use the word-for-word method when translating complex sentences However, this makes translated texts obscure, more cumbersome Students need to select the right method for the original texts so that they have a good result on studying translation Question 7: What tools did you use when translating those above sentences? Figure 3.2: Used tools when translating complex sentences We can see that more than half of the students used tools when translating complex sentences Only 28% of them used their vocabulary without using any tools It is so elated that you are aware of learning English as well as improving your vocabulary The most effective tool to help students translate English texts is an online and offline dictionary on the telephone (30%), followed by Google translation (26%), one of the popular tools of many people Besides, 14% of the students used the Trados tool, a useful tool for the translation job In contrast, one student (2%) said that you used another tool, it is Wordfast From this result, about 70% of students need the help of tools It shows that most students lack English vocabulary, lack of grammar knowledge as well as have not mastered translation skill Therefore, expand vocabulary and improve grammar are necessary for the students when learning translation in particular and English in general Question 8: What is the biggest challenge you have to face when translating from English to Vietnamese? What is the biggest challenge you have to face when translating from English to Vietnamese? A.Choosing the appropriate meaning of vocabulary from context meaning as well as lack of vocabulary B.Misunderstanding culture C.Lack of knowledge of English grammar 37 Number of choices 35 Percentage 12 17 24% 34% 70% D.Limitation of background knowledge 20 E.Mistranslation subordinate clauses which are complex and 16 difficult to master F.Lack of motivation when translating complex sentences 19 G.Influence of mother tongue when translating sentences 19 H Others: Table 3.6: Why you cannot translate complex sentences 40% 32% 38% 38% This table reflects that almost all students faced with challenges when translating complex sentences The number of people who feel difficult to choose the appropriate meaning of vocabulary account for a total of 70% Misunderstanding about culture is the difficulty ranking in the second position (40%) The difficulties because of lack of motivation and influence of mother tongue which is one of the factors influencing the translation process when translating sentences have the same rate (38%) 34% of students have a lack of knowledge of English grammar They have translated the wrong tenses of verbs or omitted their tense Moreover, there are some students getting troubles in other challenges Some students say that in some cases, they mistranslated subordinate clauses which are complex and difficult to master or forgot to translate some clauses Other students reveal that they misunderstand culture and it is not easy for them to transfer the meaning of the text in Vietnamese I think these students need to find out an effective method of studying as well as improving your knowledge Question 9: How much time you usually spend on studying translation? Figure 3.3: The amount of time students usually spends on studying translation (as self-study) As it can be seen that most of the students spend less time on self-studying translation When being asked about how much time students usually spend on studying translation at home, there are choices: 1-2 hours, hours, hours, more than hours According to chart 3.3, while a large number of students spend from one to three hours per week to study translation, about 10% of students spend more than hours on studying this subject Although most of the students are aware of the advantage of translation, they haven’t focused and invested time to practice it It 38 is difficult for students to study translation well Studying in class is not enough, you need to practice translation at home Looking back at yourself, what are you missing? If you lack vocabulary, you must add vocabulary, if you are weak grammar, you need to improve grammar You translate a lot of texts, but it is limited by context Read books, watch the news, cultural programs implement the knowledge that you lack Studying every time, everywhere To summarize, students should invest much time in studying to master their knowledge Question 10: What you to improve your translation skills? What you to improve your translation skills? Number of choices 15 17 Percentag e 30% 34% Learning vocabulary Doing grammar exercises from grammar books or the Internet Reviewing teacher’s feedback to learn vocabulary, 26 52% grammar and way of using vocabulary Reading and practicing translating from newspapers, 33 66% magazines, articles from English to Vietnamese and vice versa Reading books on translation, bilingual documents 21 42% and newspapers, … Practicing translation in pairs or groups 16 32% Comparing English and Vietnamese version 16 32% Others 0 Table 3.7: The ways students often use to improve translation skills In the above table, it shows that the students have used many different methods to improve their translation skills The most effective ways to help them overcome the difficulties in studying this subject is reading and practicing translating from newspapers, magazines, articles from English to Vietnamese and vice versa (66%), followed by reviewing teacher’s feedback to learn vocabulary, grammar and way of using vocabulary (52%) and reading books on translation, bilingual documents and newspapers, … (42%).Besides, many students think that doing grammar exercises from grammar books or the Internet (34%) can help them avoid grammatical mistakes and complete sentences The same number of students (32%) shares that they need to both practice translation in pairs or groups and compare English and Vietnamese version 30% of them suppose that they should 39 learn vocabulary Except for those methods mentioned above, no one shares another way Reading translations from English to Vietnamese and vice versa from newspapers, magazines, articles, etc is chosen by 6.6 % of students In contrast, one students (3.4%) say that they nothing at home 3.2 Discussion From the analysis of the study result, it is easy to see the current reality of the 3rd-year students at the Faculty of English, Thuongmai University and some their difficulties when translating complex sentences in English Economic newspapers/ Firstly, lack of vocabulary as well as choosing the appropriate meaning of vocabulary from context meaning could be the major reasons for the difficulties When reading English books as well as English Economic newspapers or translating English texts, most students encounter new words, and more than half of students look up this work on an online and offline dictionary of the telephone or ask friends or guess the meaning of new words from the context Sometimes, they lose motivation in learning translation as well as translating many complex sentences Translation is a new and difficult subject that requires students to work hard and be persistent especially when translating long texts and complex sentences Secondly, we can see that grammar structure is a big challenge for almost all students when translating The texts from English into Vietnamese or the texts from Vietnamese to English have long and complex sentences with cumbersome grammar It is very difficult for weak students who don’t master English grammar to study the translation subject Moreover, the lack of self-study time is one of the reasons which makes students feel difficult The time the students spend time studying at home, nearly all spend less than hours per week and this amount of time is not enough This will lead to a narrow knowledge of culture and background as well as your ability Culture must be collected gradually, accumulating every day The more knowledge of culture you have, the bigger your vocabulary is Finally, the influence of the mother tongue is a difficulty for students when translating English texts or Vietnamese texts When you are greatly influenced by 40 your mother tongue, it can interfere with learning new habits when learning a new foreign language In short, thanks to the questionnaire, the researchers had collected a lot of useful information about the reality and the difficulties of the students With this result, the researchers continue to complete the purpose of our research by giving some suggestions for students to have progress in studying English and translation subject 41 CHAPTER 4: RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Basing on the information collected from the questionnaire, the researchers recognize challenges the students faced when translating complex sentences in English Economic newspapers in particular and all texts in general In this part, we would like to mention some suggestions which I think will be useful for students of the Faculty of English, Thuongmai University 4.1 Suggestion on improving vocabulary Learning vocabulary plays an important role in studying English First of all, learners have to decide which new words to learn English is just like Vietnamese, with many words, we cannot learn it all So, we must choose new common words related to different topics such as environment topic, school topic, economy topic…It helps them remember these words longer Students should avoid learning words that are not rare or useful or don’t use in communication and life Secondly, it is how to learn vocabulary Don't force yourself to memorize words but turn them into a familiar and obvious way, seeing it every day without effort Students can collect vocabulary on topics they like such as movies, music, books, newspapers, or collect vocabulary from the signals in life, daily use needs We encourage them to watch movies and listen to music because they not only learn new words but also improve their listening and speaking skills Reading books on translation, bilingual documents and newspapers, … help students enlarge vocabulary, practice translation skills as well as reading-understanding skills When reading books or stories, the context was often enough for them to guess the meaning of new words Connecting the new words with their family helps them have a large vocabulary knowledge Moreover, to deal with the problem of memorizing the meaning of words, students should practice regularly in many effective ways Paying attention to new words you don’t know, take note of them carefully But that’s not enough, it is very easy for learners to forget the new words’ meaning just some days later if they don’t have a regular review, therefore, day by day they will lose these leaned words So, students can write these words in the notebooks or small cards that they can hand 42 everywhere with their translation or definition or some examples Students can also turn on programs of learning vocabulary on computers or telephones There are many programs and website help you study English In that way, whenever students work with computers or use the telephone, they can see these words frequently and remember it In addition, if students have difficulties on learning vocabulary or their usage, they can ask and discuss with their teachers to understand it clearly Finally, students can take part in some games such as scrabble and crossword puzzles Their brain must work hard to deal with the challenge of the game so that they remember the words 4.2 Suggestion on improving grammar structures From the previous result, some students get trouble with grammar structures Using the wrong grammar can lead to regrettable misunderstanding Besides, learners are greatly influenced by your mother tongue, so, they will form the habit of getting the words in the right order A grammar error can change the meaning of what the writers want to convey, and, create a bad impression for the readers Which the above reasons, grammatical errors are unacceptable in a translated text This section is how to improve grammar structures Basic English grammar study is not simple, so it takes a lot of time, so not just apply 1, days not work and then give up, but persevere in implementation to get good results Firstly, learning must be paralleled with practicing Any subject is the same, not only English grammar, if students want to remember long rules, structures, rules, then they need to regular grammar exercises, and apply what has been learned about real-life situations, such as: writing diaries, emails, blogs, short stories in English, talking to native speakers, etc in which they can use the rules of the language By speaking and listening to grammar points will help students remember better than learning through books This method of studying English grammar not only helps them to revise, but also stimulates creativity, thinking, increased interest than just passive learning of theory Secondly, students should choose books, newspapers, … to read what they like, so it will be more interesting Note that when reading students should pay attention to the sentence structure, grammar that the author uses to practice analysis 43 to understand why the sentence is written so, they can ask teachers and friends to help This question and answer will help learners to think, help them remember for a long time, and learn new grammar during reading To be better at English grammar, learners have to practice doing grammar exercises regularly This will provide different ways to approach spelling, syntax, and give a better idea of the fundamentals of grammar Some grammar books are recommended to the students such as English Grammar in Use (Raymond Murphy), Essential Grammar in Use (Raymond Murphy), Oxford English Grammar (Sidney Greenbaum), etc Finally, it is practice writing skills every day The use of sentences, words, and rules and structures learned to write out a passage, a sample of stories, etc also makes learners excited and excited about the achievements they have made themselves Remember, after writing, learners should read it again and find someone who has experience in correcting errors, so that they know the errors and fix them 4.3 Suggestion on improving cultural awareness There are many ways to improve cultural awareness One of the effective ways is actually to live among them Students can take a trip to England or the United States to experience their culture But not everyone is eligible to live there because of time and money Another way of enlarging culture is by watching news programs in English speaking countries with English subtitles or foreign films It is a great idea to learn more about language and culture So that, students are aware of cultural differences Besides, students can read English newspapers such as BBC, CNN or The New York Times,… to have more information Following local websites of England or The United States help students learn their customs and cultures Lastly, it is always good if students have a friend from another culture It is not necessary to ask friends about their culture; students can find out more throughout their life and experience In addition to the above suggestions, there are other ways to have a good result of the Translation subject Spending much time on practicing translation in 44 particular and learning English in general is necessary Students themselves must be aware of the learning and invest time in learning translation Additionally, students can practice translation in pairs or groups Students can read other people's translated texts to have experiences for them The last way is comparing the English and Vietnamese versions That helps students check for errors and fix them 45 CONCLUSION Nowadays, English is as a second language in the world and no one can deny the importance of translation in the past few decades when this activity has been boosted because of rising international trade, increased migration, globalization, and the expansion of the mass media and technology such as the Internet, newspapers or magazines,… So, the translators are as a bilingual or multi-lingual cross-cultural bilingual transmitter of culture and idea However, it is not easy for the students of the English Faculty to master translation skills as well as to become a good translator In fact, the third-year students still not gain enough experience to make the best translation when they meet different fields such as economy, politics, environment, health, education,…Therefore, I want to help them reappraise their ability as have their experience in translating complex sentences in English Economic translation in particular and others texts in translation in general For those reasons, I made up my mind on “Difficulties and solutions of translating complex sentences in English Economic newspapers of the rd-year students of the Faculty of English in Thuongmai University” The thesis is divided into four main chapters The overview of the study discussed in the thesis is mentioned in chapter I carried out the theoretical background in chapter Chapter is the research findings and I give some recommendations and suggestions in the last chapter Hopefully, this study can bring valuable knowledge for the future works of readers and some improvements on the English- Vietnamese translation skills as well as the quality of their skills Surely, mistakes and shortcomings in this graduation paper are unavoidable due to my limitation of time and knowledge We have not been able to collect all practice of translation papers by students or observe how they learn and translate texts to analysis I hope that further research can it Finally, I am always willing to receive the contributions, advice and sympathies from teachers and readers to make this thesis much better Once again, I would like to give our special thanks to our supervisor Nguyen Thuy Linh, the direct instructor of this study 46 REFERENCES Vietnamese books Minh Thu- Nguyễn Hòa, Luyện dịch
