Q: What are the man and woman going to this weekend? IELTS™-Style Audio Script Midterm Test Test Audio 28 Part Tutor: Hi, Peter Sit down Are you here to discuss your assignment? Peter: Yes, I am Tutor: Fine So let’s see…the topic you’ve chosen is television, and you’re going to look at the impact it’s had in the UK? Peter: Right I’m going to call my assignment “The Sociology of Television Viewing,” because it’ll be more about the social effects than the effects on individuals Tutor: Well…It’s a good idea to have a working title of some sort, but just be prepared to change it later if necessary Students sometimes find that the focus of their assignment changes as they go along…What have you done so far? Peter: Well, I’ve already done quite a lot of background reading I went right back to the very early days of television broadcasting, because I wanted to look at the way things have developed Tutor: So you’re going right back to 1936, are you? Peter: Yes Tutor: Okay Talk me through what you’ve found out about that period Peter: Well, at that time, television sets were very expensive They cost about as much as a small car did So when the service started, there were fewer than 500 in use And growth was fairly slow, slower than had been hoped for Tutor: Yes And there were also technical problems…There was only one transmitter, and the signals could only be received clearly within a radius of about 30 miles of that Peter: Really? I didn’t know that…But in that first year of broadcasting there wasn’t much on anyway—there was only about two hours a day, one hour in the afternoon and another in the evening And there weren’t any on Sundays! Then in 1937 transmitting hours were extended—by one more hour a day! Midterm Test Audio Script Developing Tactics for Listening Third Edition Tutor: Right And now we’ve got round-the-clock programming Things have changed since then! And…what did you find out about the programs themselves? Peter: The ideas were really just borrowed from radio in the beginning… Tutor: Yes Just like when radio came in…It borrowed from variety shows Peter: Right To begin with, TV programs were a mixture of light musical entertainment, interview spots, and variety acts like acrobats or jugglers Sports and games were only shown if they could be staged inside the television studios, or on the grounds of the studio Some film was shown, too, but only short documentaries and cartoons Tutor: Yes That was because the big distributors of feature films wouldn’t allow them to be shown on TV Peter: Apparently the first time a lot of people watched TV in Britain was when the king was filmed—that was broadcast in May 1937 From then till 1939 more money was made available to improve the programs Daytime programs started coming from London, or places around London Things like national events, or sports like tennis, and cricket, and football Tutor: And they even showed farming activities from a farm in a place called Enfield Peter: Yes…And the cost of TV sets gradually came down, and by September 1939 just under 19,000 had been sold But when war broke out, transmission was stopped for security reasons, and it didn’t start up again till 1946 During the 1950s and 60s coverage gradually spread across the UK Tutor: Yes It meant there was quality entertainment available on tap, in the house, for not too much money, so people went out far less often A lot of cinemas and theatres closed down, so city streets became much emptier at night In fact, I think the social effects of television can’t be overestimated Peter: Well, yes…the 1960s are often referred to as the start of the television age [PAUSE] Tutor: Okay Good Now before you any more work, you ought to have a draft outline for your written assignment, so let’s think about that now Peter: Right I have thought about it already a bit For the introduction, I was wondering if I should explain why I chose this topic? The background for the assignment, I mean Tutor: Okay, that’s a good idea But keep it brief It could be just half a page or so Peter: Okay And then I was going to have a section on the history of television That’ll include the things we’ve just been talking about, as well as a bit about the technology Tutor: Fine But if I were you I wouldn’t include anything that’s very technical It’s not the main focus Peter: Right…And then after that I thought I’d have the section on viewing habits…That’d be the main section of the essay I’ve found a lot of information Tutor: Fine Peter: But I’m not sure…should I present the actual figures in that section, or…? Tutor: I think I’d just give a summary, in words You can put all the figures in an appendix Peter: What about having a few pie charts in the main section, just to make things clear? Tutor: Well, okay Just don’t overdo them That’s probably a good idea Peter: And then for my conclusion, I thought I could say something about the future How television might develop and the implications of that? Tutor: Yes, that sounds fine The outline you’ve got now is a working plan, and it’ll help to keep you focused You can always… Test Audio 29 Part Good morning, everyone During this course I’ve been talking about the history of domestic architecture, and today I’m going to move on to the present, and describe some of the current trends, starting with so-called “green” housing for tropical or semitropical locations As you’d expect, in tropical areas new “green” houses make use of the power of the sun Both the buildings and the appliances inside are now designed to use very little energy, but even so, there’s still a need for some electricity The use of solar panels to convert energy from the sun isn’t new, of course, but the way these are designed is getting better all the time The latest ones use a series of mirrors, and they can provide power even on cloudy days An important consideration in the tropics is how to keep a house cool year-round Unfortunately, whereas traditional houses were generally designed to be cooled by natural air flow, for several decades houses were constructed which needed artificial air conditioning This was costly and wasteful, and modern house design is reversing this For example, whenever possible, windows are now placed opposite each other so that there’s a breeze Houses also include ceiling fans for additional air circulation In addition to features that control temperature, newer houses include features that maximize natural light With smart architectural design, you should never need to turn on a light in the house during the daytime, because blocks of glass mounted in the ceilings and the walls can project sunlight into dark places And ceilings are normally painted white for light reflection As far as construction materials are concerned, one of the aims of modern building design is to support the local community and local economy whenever possible There’s a commitment to using local materials, whether these are wood or clay or gravel or stone…and also to using local craftsmen wherever possible Then…in many traditional houses, ceramic tiles were used for the roofs These are very attractive, but they break fairly easily As an alternative to this, it’s now possible to construct roofs out of recycled plastic It can be colored a natural shade of green to provide an attractive appearance These roofs are also lightweight and durable—they can last for decades A problem with materials that have commonly been used in the recent past for house construction is that they gave off unpleasant fumes—materials like paints, varnishes, wood preservatives, and even carpets But now you can get safer materials, and a key requirement of “green” building design is to minimize the use of toxic chemicals For example, harmless stuccos are available for both the inside and outside walls of houses Stuccos are also superior to paint because they don't have to be re-applied every couple years Finally, architects are now using shades of color like green and brown for the exterior of houses, because there’s a concern that the houses should blend in with the natural environment The use of suitable colors, combined with plants on the roof, make the houses look as if they’re an integral part of this [PAUSE] Well, it’s not just the design of the houses themselves that is changing, it’s also the surroundings Here’s a plan of a fairly typical new housing development As you can see, it’s surrounded by trees, and it takes in a section of the river that runs through the area, too The houses themselves are strategically placed amongst landscaped grounds, and there are excellent facilities This one includes a swimming pool—that’s the oval-shape in the center of the site—and a clubhouse in the corner where the river bends round There’s a caretaker who takes care of all the maintenance —his office is just inside the entrance, on the left Then opposite the clubhouse, on the north side of the river, there’s even a small golf course So you can see that… Midterm Test Audio Script STEP-EIKEN-Style Audio Script Midterm Test Test Audio 16 Part 1 Q: How was the boy's weekend?
