I believe it’s time to build a united Foundation (FWF), the Sika Foundation (SF), organisation built on common interests that the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners pools our resources and allows a streamlining (COLFO), the New Zealand Deer Stalkers of funding No easy task, I admit, but one I Association (NZDA) and the newly created consider worthy of discussion Tahr Foundation (TF) to name but a few We There are several articles that stand out also have several very large establishments for me in this issue including the ‘How Much nationally whose purpose is to promote and is Your Venison Worth?’ piece which is an organise competitive shooting Occasionally, intriguing glimpse at how much your game a grouping will spring up – like the Lower animal would cost if you were to purchase the North Island Red Deer Fund – in response to a venison at retail prices It’s a conversation I’ve particular threat often had when forking out for a helicopter Although there’s a lot of cross-pollination or after paying for a tank of gas on the way in terms of personalities within these into a hunt … whether the venison brought organisations, the challenge seems to be back offsets the cost Considering that your communication across the board and finding venison is the equivalent to organic, free- out where we’re best served by a united front range meat, it provides another fascinating Is it time that we should consider combining aspect to hunting and gathering your own several of these organisations for ease of food administration and to streamline our efforts so we can move forward with a more unified message from our community? they eat a variety of prey and are considered the single biggest threat to koura and could potentially impact on our trout fishery through competition and predation There are also currently concerns they could impact on water quality, particularly in Lake Rotorua due to its shallow nature”, said Mr Grayling Catfish are not native to New Zealand They’re carnivorous nocturnal bottom feeders who prey on trout and native fish, and they also lower water quality by churning up mud They’re thought to be serial spawners and are capable of producing more than 6000 eggs yearly Catfish can survive up to 48 hours out of the water, which means they can be transported over land by stowing away on boats and trailers or hiding amongst weeds stuck to motors and recreational gear It’s not known yet how the catfish got into Lake Rotorua, and while it’s likely NZ ROD&RIFLE MAGAZINE Facts Remember to remove all weeds Not only are some a pest but juvenile catfish also could be hiding in them they got there through moving up the through the Ōhau Channel, humans may have given them a helping hand “They’re known to hitchhike on boat trailers, so as people move between lakes, there’s the potential they’re carrying unwanted organisms with them This means every single lake user needs to be vigilant and check and clean all boats, trailers and equipment before moving between water bodies”, said Mr Grayling And if lake users aren’t vigilant, the catfish could spread further – a shocking prospect for our lakes and the species that call them home For this reason, an army of volunteers has united in the fight this summer, working on the frontline in an operation to educate the public about the problem pest fish More than 130 volunteers have signed up to the Te Arawa Catfish Killas programme, a community initiative to stop the spread of the fish In a concentrated effort, the crusade has seen locals trapping fish and spreading the message amongst boaties and lake users in a series of community presentations From boat ramp to boat ramp throughout the region, the word about the catfish war is out Lake users have been urged to take extra care and wipe down vessels before and after use in order to combat the spread of catfish Education is essential when it comes to preventing further irreparable damage to the lake BROWN BULLHEAD CATFISH • Introduced to New Zealand in 1877 • Throughout the Waikato River system • Typically grow 23cm to 30cm in length • Can lay thousands of eggs WHAT WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD? • Bay of Plenty Regional Council has netted 53,478 catfish in Lake Rotoiti since March 2016 They’re also funding research by NIWA and the University of Waikato to find new surveillance methods and eradication tools to stop the spread of the pest • The Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Te Arawa Lakes Trust are also working with community groups and locals to raise awareness Correction WE DINNAE KIN HOW LUCKY WE ARE in the last issue, we mentioned that gaining your firearms license was part of the NZDA HUNTS course Upon discussion with Jim Peffers, National Co-ordinator NZDA HUNTS programme, we found this is not the case In order to manage expectations, Jim advises that the basic HUNTS course syllabus does not include firearms licencing, and having a firearms licence is not a pre-requisite of doing the course However, some NZDA branches include the firearms licence course as an add-on to their branch HUNTS course BOOK REVIEW Home from the Homer by Anya Forest Published by Anya Forest 365 pages RRP $34.99 WHILE THE SETTING FOR THIS BOOK IS FIORDLAND AND ITS INCREDIBLE WILDERNESS, this isn’t a hunting book; it does, however, touch on moose and wapiti hunting as well as acknowledge our “prince” of hunting guides Jim Muir and his long-term client, Mr Eddy Herrick No, Home from the Homer is a fiction story for younger readers, but adults may discover it to be a lighter and fascinating read as well This Fiordland story is a time-shifting adventure; it’s quite unlike anything else folk may have read and there’s loads of history, nature and outdoor escapades contained within its pages The fictional characters entwined in the story are the Williams family: Mr and Mrs Williams and their twins, Zoe and Seth, along with their conservation-trained dog Chester The 10 NZ ROD&RIFLE MAGAZINE Reviewed by Kevin J Whitelaw family become locked into the vast remoteness of the region’s grip; the Homer Tunnel disappears, and the saga becomes more sinister after the twins become separated – initially from their parents and then from each other Eventually, they discover they’ve been captured in a forgotten time zone of the past – an era without telephones or motor vehicles After splitting up, each twin is faced with the task of travelling to Milford Sound on foot through the wild, unknown terrain in an effort to reunite with their parents; their journeys are mysterious and full of jeopardy With the transcendence of time, the reader is continually being introduced to a variety of geographical locations and pioneering characters who were synonymous with early Fiordland As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that Zoe and Seth form mythical friendships with a number of individuals, all of whom have been meticulously researched by the author These include legends such as Murray Gunn, Donald Sutherland and Richard Henry who are all accurately portrayed and cleverly incorporated into the story, while a confrontation with Fiordland’s indigenous “Lost Tribe” and the Haast’s eagle make Zoe’s intrepid journey perhaps a fraction scary for a young 12-year-old reader For the hunting-minded reader, there are accounts of the successful partnership of Jim Muir and Eddy Herrick as they hunted for moose, with the expedition to the Seaforth Valley in Dusky Sound being very well described and cleverly slotted into the kaleidoscope of fiction As the twins perilously trek the bushlands, each seeking the safety of Milford Sound, snippets of Fiordland history are included which makes this tale far more realistic; readers will find that the frequently altered time zone – a constant occurrence throughout the story – simply accentuates the author’s skill as she blends myth and reality The book is further enhanced by illustrations, maps and excellent photographs of the personalities and locations described therein Zoe and Seth, after being tormented by a variety of hassles, finally overcome the upside-down duration of time and reach Milford Sound where they re-join the present and their parents The reunification of the family concludes what I found to be a refreshingly light, clever and very different read REVIEW Bakewell Burner Base Camper in Stainless Steel NEW BY KEVIN POWER THE STAINLESS-STEEL BAKEWELL BURNER BASE CAMPER is a recent addition to the Bakewell Burner line-up This model is heavier than the aluminium-made Bakewell Burner Camper, so it’s aimed more at campers, motorhomers, beach houses, huts, and hunting and fishing base camps; the stainless-steel construction, however, has several advantages for base camp use when compared to the lighter aluminium unit The Base Camper has a larger cooking surface, air-vented door, larger firebox and flue pieces, which allow the unit to retain heat more consistently and, therefore, makes the heavier burner more ideal for cooking Wayne Bakewell’s workmanship and welding are beautiful, and there’s nothing to wear, rot or burn out as it’s all 304 stainless steel apart from the legs which are aluminium – it’ll outlast your lifetime Wayne’s a practical guy, and this is reflected in the unique and simple, functional design of the Base Camper Burner A lot of thought has gone into the packaging; all the flue sections, legs, leg extensions, water box and clothes drying rack fit inside the firebox for travel and storage Our unit and accessories totalled 15 parts, but when packed down, only two separate items remain – the firebox and side tray; when at camp, it takes less than two minutes to set up We ran a wood charcoal mix which burned cleanly and evenly and was perfect for frying The temperature was easily regulated with the ingenious rotary air inlet on the firebox door; I say ‘ingenious’ because the air inlet holes have been drilled in a pattern that allows very precise air control While frying, we cooked 102 NZ ROD&RIFLE MAGAZINE our spuds in the 5L water box and used the water to wash the dishes after dinner – brilliant! Later in the evenings, we ran the burner with the door open to see the flames, and the extra radiant heat was welcome as the temperature dropped The firebox has a high lip across the front which retains the coals securely – a boon for when we had the door open What the Base Camper Burner brings to your campsite is the ability to have the ambience of an outdoor fire anywhere you stop Without it on our summer holiday, particularly with the dry weather, we couldn’t have enjoyed sitting around a fire in the evenings due to the fire risk In my mind, this is the main appeal of the Base Camper; however, for my ‘drive-in’ hunting trips, it’ll be going in the back of the ute as the only appliance to cook food, boil water, dry clothes and keep warm All in all, a superbly built, affordable and well-thought-out firebox that’s versatile and will last forever, which is a rare trait amongst a lot of cheap, imported crap THE BASE CAMPER BURNER KIT COMES STANDARD WITH: • Firebox • removable legs • 4-piece removable S/S flue • S/S side tray WEIGHT: • Total standard Base Camper weight: 18 kgs • S/S water box: 2.0 kgs • Drying rack: 0.4 kgs • Spark arrestor: 1.0 kg ACCESSORIES ALSO INCLUDED: • spark arrestor • litre S/S water box with tap • leg extensions • clothes drying rack FINISH: Stainless-steel finish • Main Burner Box: 4mm top plate and door; 3mm sides and bottom • Side Table, Water Box, Drying Rack and Flue: All 304 stainless steel • Legs: 25 x alloy tube SIZE: Overall transportable size: • 430mm L, 270mm W, 330mm H Erected height: • To top of 4-piece flue: 1950mm high overall OPPOSITE PAGE: THE BASE CAMPER • To top of cooking surface, COMPONENTS fit neatly in the firebox with standard legs: for transport Brilliant! FIRST IMPRESSIONS On receiving my pair of Athlon Ares 10x42 binoculars, my first reaction was one of surprise At a retail price of just under $1,000 I wasn’t sure what to expect, as this price range puts them as an expensive pair for most hunters, but a more budget-friendly option for the high-end European users; this particular model has been very well-received around the globe with several awards from independent online review websites The binoculars come in a modest nylon carry case with a carry strap, belt loop and a plastic clip on the front; you also get a pair of front and rear lens caps, lens cloth and a rubber-coated, foam neck strap When first picking up the Athlons, I was impressed with how solid they felt considering how light they were for a full-size binocular The double-hinge design is smooth, yet firm enough that when you put them down, they hold their position until you pick them up again The outer body is made of a magnesium polymer which feels great in the hand, and with the ‘checkering’ style grip on the barrels, it creates a sure grip The eye cups have three different heights with positive clicks, and although they felt very comfortable and solid, the mechanism did feel a little more budget The focus ring has thin rubber lines on the large metal body; however, it was quite stiff, and there was significant backlash in the mechanism when trying to fine-tune the focus This teething issue did eventually 104 NZ ROD&RIFLE MAGAZINE come right, and towards the end of my testing, it was operating much more smoothly When putting the Athlon Ares up to your eyes, the first thing that grabs you is the field of view; these binoculars provide a wide image for a 10x42 binocular with a respectable 341ft (104m) field of view at 1000 yards However, for those who wear glasses, this wider field of view will cost you a little less eye relief The second thing I noticed when looking through the Ares 10x42s was the image quality, and I was pleasantly surprised – objects were sharp and came into focus easily; colours were well-saturated, but still naturally presented and the blacks were deep with the image having good depth The overall image was very bright and retained good clarity in low light, albeit – perhaps a reflection of the price tag – there was some blurring in the corners of the image which were noticeable when mounted to a tripod PERFORMANCE Finally, after looking over all the technical specs and analysing the build quality, it was time to get into the hills and put them to the test; Dad and I had planned a 5-day helicopter trip into South Westland, camping on the tops for chamois and tahr To determine whether it might be possible for the Athlons to compete against the high-quality European market, I decided to take along a pair of German 10x42 binoculars that retail at twice the price of the Ares I was impressed with how solid they felt considering how light they were for a fullsize binocular The double-hinge design is smooth, yet firm enough that when you put them down, they hold their position until you pick them up again In the field, the Athlon Ares performed well They were really comfortable in the hand with great texture and grip on the outer housing, and the rubber lines on the focus ring were most helpful when operating with gloves on The dioptre was very easy to set for my eyes, and once set, it held its focus throughout the day; the optics were great, and there was enough colour and depth in the image to pick up animals with a variety of backdrops at extended ranges Compared to the more expensive German pair, the humble Athlons were again, very impressive; the image was equally as clear, and they were very similar in brightness However, the colours didn’t quite ‘pop’ the way the German glass did, and in low light, they were a little less bright; the eye cups and focus ring weren’t as smooth, and the front lens covers kept popping out Regardless, when Dad and I were to decide which pair we wanted for the last day of glassing, we both reached for the Athlons Ares! Despite the few niggles with the focus ring and lens caps, we both found the Ares more rugged, and they held their focus, dioptre and eye width much better compared to the more ‘sensitive’ European pair When Dad put the Athlons down to walk another few hundred yards down a ridge, he could simply pick them up again and instantly have a clear, focused image; compared to the German pair, which we both found very fiddly and battled to get a good image at the start of each glassing session, they were superior CONCLUSION Overall, I think Athlon have done a great job with their new mid-range Ares 10x42s They tick many of the boxes Kiwi hunters are looking for at a price that makes them a real bargain; they don’t have the same attention to detail in the accessories as some of their European rivals, but the key components and features have been done very well I’d recommend the Athlon Ares 10x42 to most experienced or new hunters looking for a pair of very clear, well-built binoculars that’ll 95% of what other pairs but at a fraction of the price SPECS • 10x magnification • 42mm objective lens • 341ft field of view at 1000 yards • Fog proof and waterproof • Double-hinged tube design • Fully multi-coated ED glass lenses • Magnesium body design • Tripod adaptable • 845 grams • 16.7cm long Pros • Great value for money • Good image quality • Great handling ergonomics • Wide field of view • Rugged build quality • Tripod adaptable Cons • Loose front lens covers • Focus ring sticky out of the box (improved with time) • Short eye relief LOCATED AMOUNGST THE FOOTHILLS OF THE WORLD HERITAGE TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK RUAPEHU HUNTING ADVENTURES FALLOW, SIKA, RED DEER & OTHER GAME ANIMALS Head out from the Farm Stay & into the backcountry with our experienced guide on 1650 hectares (4200 acre) of private estate Whether you are hunting for meat deer or trophies you can enjoy unspoiled panoramic views of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe & Mt Taranaki rarely experienced by others Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just beginning your hunting journey, we can provide an unforgettable free-range hunting adventure that is tailored for you .And after the hunt, kick back & enjoy a cold beverage & roast meal in your comfortable Farm Stay accommodation @ruapehuhunting ruapehuhunting CONTACT US: RUAPEHUHUNTING@GMAIL.COM ◊ RUAPEHUHUNTING.CO.NZ ◊ +64 (0)22 0465417 WWW.RODANDRIFLE.CO.NZ 105 NEW GEAR!
