artist His portfolio includes commissioned artwork including Portraiture, Miniatures, Automotive and Military Art He is also the custodian of the UK Airbrush Forum on Facebook, a place of support and guidance for newcomers of the artform as well as for seasoned professionals to showcase their work r a W d n a Love cket a leather j STEP 2,3 & I then begin to freehand the design with the airbrush and white paint, laying down the lines and blocking areas in This gives me a good base to build the colours up STEP I start off by mounting the jacket on a suitable board to hold the required shape and giving it a good clean with leather cleaner The next stage is to lightly sketch the design onto the jacket, for dark surfaces like this jacket I find chalk or a white watercolour pencil a good tool for this process 76 l P&KG Apr/May 19 STEP BY STEP STEP 5,6 & Next I start to block the colours in and begin to build up the simple definition of the image STEP & I then start work on bringing all the detail out, getting the skin tones right, shading, contrast, sharpening the image STEP BY STEP 10 STEP 10 At this stage I’m putting in highlights, doing final adjustments and making sure everything is how I want it 11 STEP 11&12 Once I’m happy with the overall image I then use a leather top coat finisher which is like a clearcoat for leather to protect the work and that’s it done local school during fundraiser events, and always enjoyed it After the birth of our 7th child I had to find work that was flexible enough to work around our large family and I thought I’d set up my own face painting business, so Blue Kangaroo Entertainment was born in April 2016 Later that summer I heard about a body painting competition at The Living Art Show and figured I’d give it a go - and I have to say I’ve never looked back The body paint bug bit me instantly and I just fell in love with this transient art form, with the people involved and the creative energies they had were infectious! I soon entered my second competition and was overwhelmed by being placed 2nd in a pairs paint with the fabulous Miss Kate Monroe The theme for this particular competition is released on the morning and, with only an hour to plan your ideas, it’s so completely out of my own comfort zone where I usually have to plan every detail in advance It’s good to challenge yourself and grow your abilities by doing something new, and that’s another thing I love so much about body painting I’ve now been placed 2nd in two more individual competitions and am looking forward to chasing that elusive 1st place next year The paint community are an incredibly supportive and inspiring lot, and I consider myself so lucky to be a part of it - for anyone who is out there thinking ‘I’d like to try that’ then my advice is GO FOR IT! When I’m planning a body paint there is always that magic moment when something fires my imagination - whether an element of a pattern or an image, or theme in the case of competitions, or a paint by someone else that inspires me I tend to draw out design compositions on paper first so I can fiddle about and see what works best where - I am a bit of a control freak and am so envious of other painters who seem to pull incredible designs out of thin air, as I have to plan every little detail WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT ? My favourite product might come as a bit of a surprise but its good old Snazaroo face paint I use it all the time for body painting as it is so easy to blend and gives me a good base coat to work on Sure the colors aren’t as pigmented as other brands but that’s another good thing about Snaz, it easily mixes into other paints as well I find that both the black and the white flake off very easily so I use Diamond FX or Superstar, both of which are reasonably priced and have great coverage My other go-to product that I really could not live without is Mehron metallic powders which I use with the mixing liquid for highlights and details DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE OF WORK?
