In fact, I did not expect it would be as exciting as it turned out to be if I am being totally honest It far exceeded my expectations and am already looking forward to next year I have been on several desert drives with respected tour operators in Dubai and enjoyed them all — but never to the extent in which I enjoyed the 38th Gulf News Fun Drive I think what made it so special was the sheer number of cars and people that attended; I SUPER SUPRA The new Supra has been revealed and I like the new look I’m a huge fan of the model (I’ve owned several of these iconic Toyotas in the past) and I’m looking forward to getting a closer look at the newbie I think it will be excellent to believe there were close to 1,000 vehicles participating in the event That is a huge number My friend and I came to the rescue of half a dozen drivers who had got themselves stuck and the camaraderie between all the drivers and marshals (and those who arranged the event) was simply superb — it really felt like a huge family mucking about in the desert! GAC ENTRANZE China’s GAC Motor has its sights set on the US market, and it signalled its intentions at Detroit by unveiling the futuristic Entranze full-electric crossover concept The seven-seater was conceived at the company’s California design studio and features unusual sliding glass doors There’s a tech bonanza inside with multiple OLED screens, while 90 per cent of the interior is crafted from cork LEXUS LC CONVERTIBLE We’re already familiar with Lexus’s LC500 coupe but get set for a drop-top derivative that lands here in 2020 Unveiled in ‘concept’ form at Detroit, the LC Convertible is arguably even more visually striking than its fixed-roof counterpart You could think of it as a more wallet-friendly alternative to the Mercedes S-Class Convertible, Porsche 911 Cabrio and Ferrari Portofino CADILLAC XT6 The premium American brand recently bolstered its SUV line-up with the XT4 and XT5, and now comes the eightseat XT6 that sits below the gargantuan Escalade in Caddy’s line-up With edgy styling that mimics its smaller brothers, the XT6 is propelled by a 3.6-litre 310bhp V6 mated to a nine-speed auto Standard models will be front-drive, with AWD available as an option KIA TELLURIDE The eight-seater Telluride is billed as Kia’s largest SUV to date, and its funky styling sets it apart from anything the brand has given us so far Like its Hyundai Palisade cousin, the Telluride is powered by a 291bhp 3.8-litre V6, and it’s offered in front-drive and AWD formats Goodies on offer will include a 10.25in touchscreen and 630-watt Harman Kardon sound system VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT VW’s centrepiece is the second-gen Passat, which retains its predecessor’s platform, but sports fresh new styling characterised by a thrusting chrome grille and sporty front fascia The cabin has also been smartened up and standard safety kit in the newbie includes Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring Power comes from a 174bhp 2.0-litre turbo motor mated to a six-speed auto FORD EXPLORER Ford’s new sixth-gen Explorer turned heads with its clean styling, plus the fact the ST performance flagship packs a 400bhp punch from its twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 However, base models get the same 2.3-litre four-pot turbo that’s offered in the Mustang It promises a sporty drive, as the Explorer will be available with rear-wheel-drive (most rivals are front-drive in standard form) INFINITI QX INSPIRATION CONCEPT Infiniti encountered a slight snag with its QX Inspiration as the electrified SUV concept initially didn’t make it onto the stage due to a technical glitch However, it got there eventually, giving showgoers a preview of the brand’s future design language Infiniti claims the QX concept serves up “blistering off-the-line acceleration” from its twin electric motors and a “lounge-like” cabin 2019 BMW SERIES BMW UPS LIMO ANTE The Munich carmaker’s flagship saloon gets an extensive revamp aimed at boosting its appeal and taking the fight to the Mercedes S-Class WORDS: GAUTAM SHARMA PHOTOS: SUPPLIED B MW crammed its current-gen Series with a host of clever tech when it launched in 2015, yet the flagship Bimmer has lived in the shadow of the funkier MercedesBenz S-Class in the sales race The Bavarian brand’s brains trust hasn’t taken too kindly to this, and the result is the vehicle you see pictured here It’s the most extensive mid-life revamp any of the six generations of the Series have been subjected to, with a raft of upgrades both inside and outside to boost the limo’s appeal The first thing you’re likely to notice is that massive grille up front, and this is becoming a BMW trademark of late, with both the X5 and X7 SUVs also sporting XXL nostrils in an attempt to visually distance them from their competitors In the case of the Series, the big grille is all the more prominent due to the contrast created by a new headlight cluster that’s slimmer than before The standard beams 10 CLASSIC CORNER 1994 FERRARI F512 M This was the ultimate iteration of the Testarossa and a fitting final salutation to the iconic flat 12-cylinder Italian sportscar WORDS: IMRAN MALIK S ome felt the new nose, front and rear lights, along with the turbinestyle alloys was just a bit of ‘tinsel’ — but this last-ditch effort by Ferrari ensured the Testarossa, now over a decade old, bowed out with a bang The final iteration of its famed flat 12-cylinder mid-engine sportscar was called the F512 M with the letter standing for Modificata, which, as you probably guessed is Italian for “modified” Ferrari updated the design over its predecessor, the 512 TR, by giving it exposed headlights, an oval shaped grille, revised tail lights and skewed five-spoke wheels It retained the iconic slatted side intakes and gained more power; the 4.9-litre motor was updated with new titanium connecting rods and a redesigned crankshaft to help it produce 440bhp at 6,750rpm and 500Nm of torque at 5,500rpm It’s top speed remained the same as before at 315kph but thanks to its near 50/50 weight distribution, the F512 M offered far better handling Today, it is one of the rarest ‘modern’ Ferraris and what with just 501 units built, low mile examples tend to fetch around Dh1.5 million at auction, which is double what they cost back in 1994 38 LONG-TERM REVIEW 2018 INFINITI QX80 SO LONG Our long-termer finally leaves wheels HQ — what did we make of it? areas, our time with the Infiniti has reinforced our decision to select it as the Best Premium SUV at the wheels Car of the Year awards early last year Its strong, proven underpinnings shared with the Y62 Nissan Patrol, spacious and luxuriously appointed interior and the 400bhp, 560Nm naturally aspirated 5.6-litre V8 engine all combine well to make it one of the best large premium SUVs on the market today While it was already selling well here, the makeover that the current model has received increases its appeal, and makes it an even more attractive proposition than the Nissan Patrol thanks to its more unique appearance and the imposing faỗade While the upscale cabin has abundant room for passengers, we had previously noted that cargo space is a bit limited with all three rows of seats up However, I this week I had to take visiting family to the airport and the QX80 effortlessly devoured two suitcases, along with a 49in television and a sound system in their respective cartons and still accommodated four adults in comfort The other minor complaints we had were the lack of features such as softclose doors and auto folding side mirrors It is understandable that incorporating these into a mid-cycle update could have been a challenge, but we hope the next generational update will feature all these as standard Overall, the Infiniti QX80 is a great buy for someone who wants SCOTLAND WHEELS 2016 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT IN THE UAE YEARS Welcome to wheels, Martin That is an awesome looking Challenger you’ve got there; tell us about it… Thanks for featuring me in wheels! I have always had a love for American muscle cars and living in a country now where I could get one, I jumped at the chance when I came across this at the Dodge dealership in Abu Dhabi I just fell in love with it and so I bought it It’s been mine for two years I looked at the Charger but it didn’t quite make the grade as the retro looks of the Challenger won me over hands down It has since been heavily customised 46 and it looks great; tell us from start to finish all of the work that you have had done to it… I wanted to give it a more aggressive look and so I opted for a unique design theme; you’ll notice that it says Faol on the car in a few places — this means wolf in Gaelic — and this is the native language of Scotland I wanted it to look like a wolf had walked through it so I had claw marks airbrushed on the front and rear of the car To achieve the look I was after, I first had the original sticker stripes removed and repainted on with red pin stripes I also painted stripes on the profile to give it that old school Challenger look Then, I spruced up the engine bay with some custom air brushing including wolf foot prints and splatters of ‘blood’! Next was a custom carbon fibre splitter and rear spoiler and finally I rounded the exterior off with a new set of custom painted wheels with hand machined wheel spacers all round and the brake callipers were also re-painted golden Now, people are amazed at the work done on the car, especially the engine bay and the boot — where the wolf now resides! In fact, that wolf head is the centre piece of the car, it’s a 3D hand made head and it has been known to frighten many kids at car shows! The reactions that my car creates is always entertaining and overall, I am very proud of it and very humbled by the attention it gets It makes all the hard work feel worthwhile It really stands out now but you didn’t “I spruced up the engine bay with some custom air brushing including wolf foot prints and splatters of ‘blood’!” 47 “At the moment it makes 485bhp but I want to increase this by turbo charging it and the magic number I have in my head would be 1,000bhp!” 48 stop there — you ensured that it had the go to match the show… That’s right, I wanted more power and so I added a custom cold air intake by UGR which improved the throttle response and also I removed the muffler and added UGR carbon fibre exhaust tips I must say it sounds fabulous when I floor it now! I bet it does — nothing beats straight pipes! You also fettled with the chassis, right? Yes, I wanted to improve the ride so I got an air suspension installed; it did the trick and I can adjust the ride height of my car — for shows it’s as low as it will go!
