LESSON : A CLOSER LOOK 1 Period 36 Date of preparation: October 27, 2018 Date of teaching: November 13,2018 Class: 6A4,5,6,7 Aims: At the end of the lesson students will be able to master the vocabulary relating to travel items and pronounce the sounds t and st Lexical Items: plaster, walking boots, painkiller, sun cream, scissors, sleeping bad, backpack, compass. Teaching aids needed: books, CD, pictures, subboards. PROCEDURE Time Teaching steps 2ms 7ms 14ms 7ms 5ms 5ms I WARMUP (2’) Chatting: Where did you go in the summer holidays? What did you bring? Was your holidays enjoyable? II CHECKINGUP PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE (5’) Sets the scene: You may need to spell your name when you order a train ticket. Two sts roleplay the conversation then write some words relating to natural things. III NEW LESSON 1. PRESENTATION (7’) a. Introducing the context. Asks Ss to brainstorm by asking the question: What do you usually bring when you travel? Lists items that sts say: eg. Clothes, medicine… Shows the picture and presents the situation: we will talk about travel items you need to bring when you travel and you think what is most useful and what is the least useful on holiday. b. New vocabulary and structures: Presents new words using pictures or real objects . painkiller (n) . scissors (n) . plaster (n) . sun cream (n) . sleeping bag (n) . walking boots (n) . backpack (n) . compass (n) Use Matching to check sts’ new vocabulary . Sts match the words with the Vietnamese meaning then practise saying the items. c. Setting the task: When do you use these items? what is most useful and what is the least useful on holiday? 2. PRACTICE (14’) 2. Gets sts to complete the following sentences. (part 2page 50) 1. We’ve lost. Pass me the ________ 2. It’s so hot today. I need to take some _________ 3. My head hurts. I need to take a _________ 4. I finished packing. All my things are in my __________ 5. I walked too much. I need to put a __________ on my foot. Key : 1. compass; 2. sun cream; 3. painkiller; 4. backpack; 5. plaster. 3. Ordering vocabulary: Asks sts to imagine that if they are going to a beach holiday, what will they bring first. Asks them to put the items in order of importance for a beach holiday (in groups of six) Calls on some groups to gives their decision. Gives feedback Asks sts to think of a camping trip and do the same. Gives feedback. Remarks the most suitable order. 4 . Practise sounding out the sounds t and st together. Emphasise that s is a long sound, st is a long sound with a ‘stop’ Plays the recording once and ask sts to number the words in the order they hear them . Ex: best (1)…. Key: best (1); boat (2); coast (3); lost (4); boot (5); desert (6); plaster (7); forest (8). 5. Plays the recording again. Pauses after each word and asks Ss to repeat. 6. Asks Ss to listen carefully and raise their hands when they hear the t or st sounds. Ask sts to listen and repeat. They should pay attention to the bold typed parts of the words. 1. Swimming in the sea in Summer is best. 2. Ha Long Bay has the nicest scenery in Viet Nam. 3. The Amazon rain forest is in Brazil. 4. One day, I want to see Ayres Rock. 5. The Sahara is the hottest desert in the world. 6. I want to explore the coast by boat 3. PRODUCTION (7’) Has Ss work in groups of six. Asks Ss to discuss what they should bring when they have a twoday trip in the mountain. OTHER ACTIVITIES (5’) Has Ss arrange the words in 4 according to their pronunciation. Ss work individually. Key: t: desert, boot, boat, st : plaster, lost, forest, coast, best. Ask sts to write five words which contain the sound t, st IV HOMEWORK (5’) Ask sts to copy down the homework: . list the items you will bring for a camping trip. . practice the sound t, st . do the exercise 1,2 on page 33 in workbook.
