finding of the thesis: The thesis has investigated the determinants as well as the effects of intra- and interfarm land fragmentation in rural Vietnam In terms of the effects of fragmentation, the most important result is the very strong effect of especially inter- but also intra-farm land fragmentation on labor use in agriculture Another notable result is the finding of a positive effect of farm size on agricultural profits Note that even if there is reason to doubt that recorded market wages in agriculture correctly reflects the shadow cost of family labor, as discussed above, the opportunity cost of labor is likely to grow in the future, as labor demand in other sectors increases Therefore, the positive effect of farm size on profitability is likely to grow even stronger in the future Results also confirm the view that land consolidation facilitates at least some types of mechanization in agriculture, and that land consolidation is associated with crop diversification away from paddy In sum, reducing inter-farm land consolidation is an important means to reducing labor use and increasing efficiency in agriculture Land markets have the potential to facilitate consolidation, but this potential is currently only being exploited in that part of the country (the South) where it matters the least Reducing intra-farm land fragmentation is perhaps less important than consolidating total holdings On the other hand, if reductions in labor intensity and diversification of cropping patterns are important goals in themselves, then reducing intra-farm fragmentation is a reasonable, strategic goal Administrative land consolidation programs may play a role in this, although the costs of such programs should obviously be weighed against the benefits, which may be relatively moderate If consolidation programs are implemented, our findings suggest that they should focus on reducing distances between family homes and plots, rather than merging smaller plots into larger ones 12 Practical applicability: The results of the thesis research has shown that land fragmentation negative impact on agricultural production in Vietnam, the results of this study will be a useful reference for managers in the process of policymakers as well as land planning policies for agricultural development during the evening That of promoting the value of agricultural production, ensure food security objectives as well as to cope with climate change 13 Further research directions: In order to complete its assessment, the thesis should be further studies on assessing the affecting factors on the process of land consolidation and accumulation as promoting the application of science and technology in agricultural production, the impact of the land policy and the
