The art of cooking

Chu Thị Minh Phương – Phan Thùy Oanh (ATCC) The art of cooking From “The Vegan Cookbook”_ by Steve Brill Although the art of cooking seems mysterious at first, its elements are easy to define. You can prepare foods using different methods, with a variety of equipment, ingredients and seasonings. The great world cuisines came into being when people in diverse ecosystems and climates experimented with limited regional food resources and technologies over long periods of time. The Chinese method of stir-frying, for example, developed where large populations made firewood scarce. Brief cooking over a hot flame, stirring constantly to avoid burning, maximized fuel efficiency. The Greeks create wonderful dishes with olive oil, mint, marjoram, flour, and other locally-available ingredients. Likewise, Meso-Americans create fantastic dishes with corn and chilies. French cuisine, which we associate with expensive restaurants, originated in the kitchens of family farmers, as did Italian and many other cuisines. Diverse regions and ethnic groups, including those of the Caribbean, India, Italy, Japan, North America, and Southeast Asia, among others, have contributed ideas we can draw from. And we must thank the Native Americans for showing us how to use our own native wild edible plants. Regional cuisines realized a quantum leap forward when new world ingredients reached the old world and vice-versa. The tomatoes of Italian cuisine, potatoes of Irish dishes, and hot peppers of Indian food all come from the Americas. Turkey, a crossroads between the East and West, developed an original cuisine long ago based on elements of the Middle East, Greece, and the West before incorporating new world ingredients such as eggplants and tomatoes. Such revolutionary developments transformed medieval cuisine into the old world and new world ethnic cuisines we recognize today. When populations, along with their cuisines, were dislocated and different ethnic groups were thrown together in regions with different food resources, new creativity with food burst forth. In the Americas, for example, French and African influences transformed Haitian and other Caribbean cuisines into what they are today, while a melding of Spanish and Native American cooking styles and ingredients led to modern Mexican and Tex-Mex (another hybrid in the making) food. Substituting healthful vegetarian and wild ingredients for animal products and refined food, and using healthful procedures and proportions in modern kitchens, offers us the opportunity create new recipes in the spirit (but not to the letter) of pre-existing cuisines. In addition, over long periods of time, those cuisines become more and more special. The author also quotes a lot of examples to prove for it, such as: the Chinese method of stir-frying, the Greek wonderful dishes with olive oil, Meso-Americans fantastic dishes with corn and chilies, etc. It is really interesting to know about that. Besides, those cuisines also have a crossroads or a common origin. For example: The tomatoes of Italian cuisine, potatoes of Irish dishes, and hot peppers of Indian food all come from the Americas. Turkey, a crossroads between the East and West, developed an original cuisine long ago based on elements of the Middle East, Greece, and the West before incorporating new world ingredients such as eggplants and tomatoes. However, the most exciting things in this topic is that all these special food are made from healthy ingredients and particularly good for health. To sum up, cooking is considered an art and the cooks are all artist. Body Painting Body painting, or sometimes body painting, is a form of body art. Unlike tattoo and other forms of body art, body painting is temporary, painted onto the human skin, and lasts for only several hours, or at most (in the case of Mehndi or "henna tattoo") a couple of weeks. Body painting that is limited to the face is known as face painting. Body painting is also referred to as (a form of) temporary tattoo; large scale or full-body painting is more commonly referred to as body painting, while smaller or more detailed work is generally referred to as temporary tattoos. Body painting is not always large pieces on fully nude bodies, but can involve smaller pieces on displayed areas of otherwise clothed bodies. Many people use body paint every day without realizing it. Cosmetics---mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick---are a type of body paint. And while most people think of lead makeup as a thing of the past, recent studies show there are trace amounts of lead in modern cosmetics. Since lead can seep into the skin and cause major health problems, it important to do proper research to make sure the body paint you are using is lead-free. Body painting with clay and other natural pigments existed in most, if not all, tribalist cultures. Often worn during ceremonies, it still survives in this ancient form among the indigenous people of Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands and parts of Africa. A semi-permanent form of body painting known as Mehndi, using dyes made of henna (hence also known rather erroneously as "henna tattoo"), was and is still practiced in India and the Middle East, especially on brides. Since the late 1990s, Mehndi has become popular amongst young women in the Western world. Indigenous peoples of South America traditionally use annatto, huito, or wet charcoal to decorate their faces and bodies. Huito is semi-permanent, and it generally takes weeks for this black dye to fade. Actors and clowns around the world have painted their faces—and sometimes bodies—for centuries, and continue to do so today. More subdued form of face paints for everyday occasions evolved into the cosmetics we know today. Body painting led to a minor alternative art movement in the 1950s and 1960s, which involved covering a model in paint and then having the model touch or roll on a canvas or other medium to transfer the paint. French artist Yves Klein is perhaps the most famous for this, with his series of paintings "Anthropometries". The effect produced by this technique creates an image-transfer from the model's body to the medium. This includes all the curves of the model's body (typically female) being reflected in the outline of the image. This technique was not necessarily monotone; multiple colors on different body parts sometimes produced interesting effects. Body painting is commonly used as a method of gaining attention in political protests, for instance those by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) against Burberry (the famous high fashion brand). It is common in militaries all over the world for soldiers in combat scenarios to paint their faces and other exposed body parts (hands, for example) in natural colors such as green, tan, and loam for camouflage purposes. Body painting festivals happen annually across the world, bringing together professional body painters as well as keen amateurs. Body paintings can also typically be seen at football matches, at rave parties, and at certain festivals. The World Body painting Festival in Seeboden in Austria is the biggest art event in the body painting theme and thousands of visitors admire the wonderful work of the participants. Body paint festivals that take place in North America include the North American Body Painting Championship, Face and Body Art International Convention in Orlando, Florida, Coast Body paint Championship in Vancouver, BC and the Face Painting and Body Art Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many artists work professionally as body painters across the world. Their work is seen regularly in television commercials, such as the Natrel Plus campaign featuring models camouflaged as trees. Body painters also work frequently in the film arena especially in science fiction with more and more elaborate alien creations being body painted. Stills advertising also used body painting with hundreds of body painting looks on the pages of the world's magazines every year. Whatever the reason for use, there is a distinction between body paint and permanent body art. Body paint is temporary. Unlike tattoos or decorative scarring, it is something that will fade and need retouching. Cosmetics are also a type of body painting. Body painting was traditionally used in many societies to signify a person's social status and religious beliefs. Nowadays, both men and women painted their bodies only for important social occasions, while in other cultures people wore body paint every day as a uniform to show their social status. Body painting had been a part of tribal culture tracing back to the earliest human gatherings. Body painting was often used in ceremonies or for military purposes. Every year, body painting festivals are being held annually all over the world. Recently, body painting is gradually more popular in Viet Nam’s social, but be careful if you want to try it because body paint’s purpose can go wrong easily. . from healthy ingredients and particularly good for health. To sum up, cooking is considered an art and the cooks are all artist.
