Berry 1991; Master 1988; Thomas 1989; Yamada & Matsuura 1982) Therefore, it is very difficult for Vietnamese learners to find the equivalence between English and Vietnamese when translating some text relating to the English article In addition, even though article is hard to acquire, students’ attitude toward it is not positive They invest less time in it In fact, they just search for and read what is needed for the exams They not explore it in depth As a result, they get confused when they work with article in translation For example, “A woman always remembers her first love with affection” (Thu Uyen, 2007, P.176) cannot be completely natural in Vietnamese like “Một người đàn bà thương nhớvềngười tình đ ầ u tiên cô ấ y”although the version is understandable and acceptable in Vietnamese When a translation version differs somewhat from the original one, it is easy to give rise to readers having a different look at what the writer wants to convey The above Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu – mentioned translation version might lead to a look that the writer refers to a specific woman whereas the writer really does not Rather, the writer makes the reference of “woman” in general Then, that sentence should be better translated as follows “người đàn bà nhớthươ ng người tình đ ầ u tiên”(Thu uyen, 2007,248) In other words, the article “A” is not translated in Vietnamese version What has been mentioned from the beginning of the introduction inspires me to carry out an investigation into what majoring – English juniors at Can Tho University work with English article system in translation. Therefore, my research will try to answer two questions: (1) Do third –year English language study students commit errors in translating the English articles in terms of generic reference? (2) What causes the errors? The research is outlined as followings: -8- Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu Chapter I: Introduction Chapter II: Literature review Chapter III: Research methodology Chapter IV: Data analysis and discussion Chapter V: Conclusion, suggestion and limitation Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu -9- Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW I DEFINITION OF ARTICLES: Article is a word which is used with a noun, and which shows whether the noun refers to something definite or something indefinite (Richards, J.Platt and H Platt: 1985:22) Also, article is a word whose role is to mark noun phrase as either “definite” or “indefinite” For example, definite the in the girl, indefinite a in a girl (Mathew: 1997:25) Thus, articles are described as “markers” that accompany a noun or a noun phrase and that denote qualities of “definiteness” or “indefiniteness” the ĐH fact that articles accompany a noun a noun theycứu Trung tâmOwing Học toliệu Cần Thơ@Tài liệu họcortập phrase, nghiên are considered as noun modifiers or noun markers (Ehrlich: 2000) However, they are not adjectives because they not describe the noun Rather, they indicate the type of reference being made by the noun or the noun phrase Articles work as noun modifiers or noun markers, but not as noun describers As a result, they are named determiners that are involved “a/an” and “the” and classified as types of articles II TYPES AND USAGES OF ARTICLES: Types of Articles: According to McArthur(1998) and Ehrlich(2000), there are only two types of article in English: the, the definite article, and a/an, the indefinite article In contrast, Quirk (1973), Murphy (1985), Eastwood (1999) and Hewings(1999) - 10 - Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu column is the evidence of the limitation of students’ understanding in terms of generic reference Furthermore, sentences that contain common and popular words to them seem to be translated better Comparison between data analysis of items of “a/an” and “the”: Note: ma: The majority mi: The minority Table 9.The comparison Vietnamese versions between “A/An” and “The” Excellent (%) ma mi A/An 54.14 42.86 Acceptable (%) 0% ma mi 14.29 85.71 Incorrect (%) Others (%) 0% ma mi 0% ma mi 0 100 0 57.14 42.86 42.86 57.14 Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu The 85.71 14.29 57.14 42.86 14.29 42.86 42.86 Table exposes clearly that the majority of students translate sentences in terms of article “the” better than sentences of “a/an” Actually, new words and the article “a/an”, which is translated as “Mộ t” , is the main problematic issue because it causes the percentage of “excellent” of “a/an” smaller than the percentage of “the” In other words, common and popular words in reality in items of “the” are not difficult for students to translate these items excellently However, the special thing is that students commit errors in all seven items of “a/an” although the percentage is not remarkable (only the minority) For items of “the”, the incorrect versions are fewer than items of “a/an” An interesting common characteristic of incorrect versions between the two items is that there are two sentences in each item translated wrongly in terms of generic reference This results from the misunderstanding between specific - 35 - 0% Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu and generic reference of students as well as their limitation in understanding articles in terms of references Looking at the minority of “acceptable” and “others” columns, the percentages of “the” in both of columns are smaller than the percentages of “a/an” It can be inferred that students appear to translate items of “a/an” a little worse than items of “the” Therefore, one time looking back at chart and chart 2, we can find that the majority of students (71.43%) translated excellently the 14 sentences, so the percentage of “Excellent” is rather impressive However, the minority of students (28.57%) still make errors in translating article in terms of generic reference The most common problems are “a/an” translated as “Một”and “the” as “Đó” or “Đó là” These errors make the translation unnatural and rough in Vietnamese versions in case of “a/an” and even totally wrong in case of “the” To sum up, word meaning or new words is the problems that occur in most of translations of students In addition, all kinds of errors that students Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu made in their translation are about their limitation in understanding references of article as well as about word-for-word translation habit of them However, students seem to translate very well sentences having common and popular words to them Analyzing the problems that cause making errors of students: The main strong reasons leading to the translating errors are  that the students (50%) not understand the new words They assume that they not know the meaning of some new words like “beagle, retriever, Airedale because these words share a similar meaning of “Chó să n” explained in English – Vietnamese dictionaries  that they (21.67%) get confused in finding Vietnamese equivalence for these words and some sentences although they know the meaning of each - 36 - Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu word in those sentences As a result, they left them unfinished Those are shown in the column “Others” in table 4, table 5, and table  that they (18.33%) are short of vocabulary, which makes them inconfident in translating sentences with uncommon words  that they (33.33%) admitted that they were familiar with translating wordfor-word and that they could roughly and unnaturally translate the sentences that they left unfinished although they knew all the words in the sentences  and that they (10%) say that they were short of knowledge of articles and they thought that what they could not translate were idiomatic Actually, it is not Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu - 37 - Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan Researcher: Tran Anh Thu CHAPTER V CONCLUSION, SUGGESTION AND LIMITATION I CONCLUSION: It would appear that the majority of students (71.43%) translated excellently (chart1 and chart2) Thus, the percentages of excellent Vietnamese versions are rather impressive (table5 and table 8) However, the minority of students (28.57%) still commit errors in translating articles in terms of generic reference Actually, most of them misunderstand or get confused between specific and generic references and the function of article that one form can Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu represent multiple functions The main reasons for these problems are their limitation of understanding reference of articles In addition, the habit of word-for-word translation also causes the article “A/An” translated into “Mộ t” that makes the Vietnamese versions unnatural and rough Sentences contain new words, which are uncommon and low in frequency, cause confusion to the students As a result, they could not find Vietnamese equivalences for those sentences By contrast, sentences having words familiar with them seem to be translated very well In short, the results of this descriptive research manifest the fact that 28.57% third - year ELS students commit errors in translating articles in terms of generic reference After this investigation, I hope that this study could provide some reasons for the causes of making errors of students in translating English article into Vietnamese - 38 - Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan II Researcher: Tran Anh Thu SUGGESTION: As mentioned in the research methodology, the participants have finished modules of “theory of translation”, “translation one”, and “grammar” that provided them with basic and advanced knowledge of articles before taking my translation test However, they even made some very simple errors on articles in translation Therefore, the combination of the terms “definite and indefinite” and references should be involved together in teaching the English articles for ELS students (Do Minh Hung: 2007:10) Also, special attention should be paid to specific and generic references in translation lessons Some students get problems with translation because of their habit of word-for-word translation For this reason, teaching translation for ESL students not only focuses on theory, rules, or exceptions but also on the way word-for-word translation that students usually apply Especially in articles in Trung tâm Học liệu ĐH Cần Thơ@Tài liệu học tập nghiên cứu terms of generic reference because with “a” or without “a” in the translation of generic reference does not change the word, but is not usually as natural as it inherently is With regard to the word meaning, some participants claim that when they are not able to translate a sentence into Vietnamese they think that it is idiomatic For this reason, translating idioms should be taken in consideration of teaching translation and other modules involving idioms In terms of vocabulary, teaching translation and other subjects should be paid attention to explaining new words clearly into Vietnamese to students, which are not popular and common in reality and are not explained clearly in dictionaries - 39 - Supervisor: Hong Lu Chi Toan III Researcher: Tran Anh Thu SUGGESTION FOR FURTHER RESEARCH : This research is mainly investigated into articles in terms of generic reference while “article” itself is a vast respect related to translation for further investigation Consequently, the results of this thesis research can be an extra reference for further research IV LIMITATION: The limitations exposed in this thesis research are  that firstly, because there are no high standards for the degrees of acceptance of Vietnamese version, it is hard for me to determine the exact degree of errors committed in the translation  that secondly, the answers to the questions that students responded were a littleHọc general Therefore, it isThơ@Tài also problematic me to analyze the causescứu Trung tâm liệu ĐH Cần liệuforhọc tập nghiên they faced  that thirdly, there are some new or uncommon words to the students in the translation test, which was hard for me to tell the difference between whether they mistranslated because of their incomplete understanding of articles or because of the uncommon words that led them to mistranslation  that finally, time does not allow me to send a grammar test to test the students’ grammar on articles in terms of generic reference before sending the translation test -
