Unit9 : Natural disasters Lesson 3 : Listening + LF 2,3,4 A. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to get some ideas on how to live with earthquakes by listening and help Ss distinguish defining relative clause from non- defining one: *Teaching aids:  Tape B. Content: I. Pre  listening: 1. Warm  up: Chatting  Have you ever heard of an earthquake?  What happens if there is an earthquake?  In which country do earthquake occur frequently?  What would you do if there was an earthquake?  Today we’re going to learn how to prepare for an earthquake. 2. Pre–teach:  Expert (n) : chuyên gia (translation)  Doorway (n) : cửa đi (realia) Make movement difficult or impossible  Roller (n) : trục lăn, con lăn (picture)  Fixture (n) : đồ đạc cố định (translation)  Mirror (n) : gương (relia)  Strike  struck  struck (v): va đập, đánh (synonym) = hit (v)  Block (v) : ngăn cản, chặn, hạn chế (explanation) *Checking: R.O.R 3. Prediction: - Have Ss read the table about living with earthquake (P.77) and guess the missing words. - Write Ss’ prediction on the board. II.While – listening: - Have Ss listen to the tape twice and check their prediction. - Call on some Ss to give out their answers. - Let Ss listen to the tape for 3rd times and correct. * Keys : (1) bottom shelf of the bookshelf. (4) mirrors (7) under a strong table (2) fridge (5) a window (8) doorway (3) washing machine (6) inside (9) corner of the room III. Post  listening: 1.Grammar review: Adjective clauses “Who” is a relative pronoun used for people. “Which” is a relative pronoun used for thing. “That” is a relative pronoun used for both “who” and “which” 2. Defining relative clause and Non- defining relative clause: -Give Ss two pairs of sentences and ask them to use relative pronouns “who” or “which” to combine them. a. The novel has been lost. You gave me the novel on my birthday. -> The novel which you gave me on my birthday has been lost. Defining relative clause b. Vietnam exports rice.Vietnam is in the South- East Asia. -> Vietnam, which is in the Southeast Asia, exports rice. Non- defining relative clause - Help Ss distinguish defining relative clause from non- defining one: Is the meaning of sentence 1 still clear when I omit the relative clause? → No, it isn’t → defining relative clause. How about the sentence 2? Is it still clear when I omit the relative clause? → Yes,it is → non- defining relative clause. *Use : - Mệnh đề quan hệ xđ là mệnh đề cần thiết vì tiền ngữ chưa xác định,không có nó câu sẽ không đủ nghĩa. - Mệnh đề quan hệ không xđịnh là loại mđề không cần thiết vì tiền ngữ đã được xđ, không có nó câu vẫn đủ nghĩa.( Mệnh đề quan hệ không xđịnh được ngăn với mđề chính bằng dấu phẩy.Trước tiền ngữ của nó thường có this, that, these, those, my, his…. hoặc tên riêng) - Không được dùng “that” trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xđịnh. 3.Recognizing Non- defining relative clauses : (LF3, p.82) - Ask Ss to underline the relative clause in the sentence.Then add commas to separate the non-defining relative clause from the rest of the sentence. - Get Ss to work in pairs, then ask them what sentence used non- defining relative clause. - Correct *Key : b. Kangaroos, which come from Australia, have long tails. c. Ba, who lives on TT street, likes playing the guitar. e. Neil Armstrong, who first walked on the moon, lived in the USA. g. Miss Lien, who sings very well, is my English teacher. 4.Practice: (LF2,p.81,82) - Have Ss match each of the sentences in column A with a related sentences in column B, then use a suitable relative pronoun to join them. - Get Ss to work in pairs. - Call on some Ss to read out aloud their sentences. - Correct : 2 – g : It snowed in Lang Son, which is on Ky Cung river, in the winter of 2002. 3 – f : Pompeii, which is an ancient city of Italy, was completely destroyed in AD.79 by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius. 4 – a : Hurricane Andrew, which swept through Southern Florida in August 1992, killed 41people and made more than 200,000 homeless. 5 – c : The cyclone of November 1970 in Bangladesh, which killed about 500.00 people, was one of the worst natural disasters of the 20th century. 6 – d : The most disastrous earthquake in Japanese history, which occurred in 1923, damaged Tokyo and Yokohama and killed about 150.000 people. 7 –b : The October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, caused extensive damage to older buildings in San Francisco Bay Area. IV. Homework: 1, Review relative clauses 2, Redo LF 2,3 into notebooks + Do LF 4 3, Do exercises 1,2,5,6 (P.58+61) (Workbook) 4. Combine each pair of sentences using “who/which/that” 1.
