Economics has been divided into the subcategories of microeconomics and macroeconomics While microeconomics focuses on the behavior of individual economic agents, this course macroeconomics - studies how economists measure macroeconomic variables and covers topics such as determination of national output, economic growth, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates Macroeconomics also discusses and assesses the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies under different scenarios The main objective of the course is to improve macroeconomic literacy as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills to explain and predict macroeconomic issues After the course, students are able to:  Understand macroeconomic principles and issues  Understand how labor and capital markets work  Identify the factors that determine national income and growth  Understand the dynamics and causes of inflation and unemployment  Evaluate how fiscal and monetary policies scores will be given based on students' class attendance, preparation, quantity as well as quality of participation in classroom; quality of participation is demonstrated through asking relevant questions, making statements that add to and facilitate class discussions, and building upon others’ comments Each student should make at least individual presentation during the course in front of the class Topics will be varied based on the topics in the textbook In addition, students are required to exercises and other activities b) Individual assignments (IA): Week or date: submission in slots 10, 18, 26 Total weight: 15% (5% each) Structure: In some particular sessions, homework assignments will be given to students The exercises in these assignments will cover subjects from the session when the previous assignment is handed Students are required to individually at home and submit to the instructor according to the deadlines Coverage of Individual Assignment is chapters 23, Structure: Students will be divided into 4-6 groups in the first session Students could join some in-class activities as members of those groups Each group will be assigned one topic, or will choose one topic subject to the instructor's approval, which is related to current economic issues in the real world Students need to apply all comprehensive knowledge of macroeconomics to explain and analyze those issues This group presentation will test critical thinking and skills of applying macroeconomic theory to explain and predict the economic phenomena in the real world One suggestion for the group presentation is to give students some current economic issues such as inflation, exchange rates, effective of macroeconomic policies, etc and ask students to identify the dynamics as well as the causes of such issues Students could be also asked to propose some policy implications The slides in pdf format and written report of the presentation must be sent to the instructor in advance A deduction of 10% of the presentation mark will be applied for each day of late submission Each group presentation will take place in appx 15 minutes The Q&A session will be followed for about 10
