Daisy Clarke SPORTS DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE What is my role at CSSC? • To review the overall provision of sport at CSSC • Provide recommendations on how CSSC can improve its current offering to members Area Association Research 87 Area Associations were asked to fill in the survey 72 Area Associations responded 1 Physical Activity Provision Please give details of any physical activity opportunities available in your Area Association Direct offerings • Competitive events – e.g a 5-a-side football tournament • One off events – e.g family sports day • On going events – e.g a regular weekly/monthly netball training session • Short courses – e.g week introduction to golf for beginners • Taster days – e.g a windsurfing lesson In-direct offerings • Local discounts - e.g 10% gym discount or swimming pool discount • Sponsoring community clubs – e.g providing a grant to a local club “We give a one off £25 per member discount each year for gym membership We also run golf lessons each year and we are hoping to run an indoor bowls day soon.” “We support a regular badminton and cricket club by advertising their matches and providing funds for purchase of equipment We have regular walking events usually or per year and usually between 20 and 30 members take part A local gym offers members 10% discount Our annual BBQ and celebration party involves an option to play games such as outdoor badminton, bat & ball, etc We have tenpin bowling social evenings (can be anywhere between 10 and 40 people taking part) We have helped one runner to attend a 10K run in London We sponsored a member to become a fitness instructor We offer a £3 refund on the cost of ten session Zumba tickets We are also planning a kayaking taster day in the spring and a sailing day.” Communication Advertising Activities •Newsletters/emails were the most popular method of communication used by 92% of AAs •Social media was the least popular and only used by 21% of AAs •Only 16% of AAs used all methods of communications to advertise activities – Newsletters/Emails, Website, Posters/Flyers, Word of Mouth and Social Media Feedback Opportunities for Members •Only a handful of AAs provide an opportunity for members to give feedback on activities attended •However the majority of AAs stated that they would like to have a feedback process in place 3 Support/Partnerships Externally •Over half of all AAs have never contacted an external organisation for assistance •Examples include local councils, local community groups, a national governing body or county sports partnership CSSC Head Office •Additional funding •Help with promoting and advertising events •Help Area Associations find out what their members want on offer 4 Looking Forward • • • • • • • Cycling Walking Running Team based activities More taster days Discounts Sports tickets Physical Activity Development Fund What is the Physical Activity Development Fund? This fund is designed to help you pilot a new physical activity in your local area or region for CSSC member and prospective members Who can apply? CSSC Regions and Area Associations Physical Activity Development Fund What can CSSC fund? •A one-off activity or an ongoing activity for up to weeks Once the activity has ended, the success will be evaluated and you will need to think about how you can further support the activity for participants if it is considered successful •An activity that directly benefits both CSSC members and prospective members •Start-up costs e.g the purchase of non-personal equipment, venue hire costs, coach/instructor fees, promotional materials Physical Activity Development Fund What can’t CSSC fund? •Ongoing running costs of an activity already existing in your area or region •An activity designed for individuals or where the benefit is for one person only •An activity organised to run for longer than weeks •An activity that has already been tried and tested in your area in the last years Physical Activity Development Fund How I apply? •Complete an application form and send electronically to daisy.clarke@cssc.co.uk •There is no deadline; applications can be made at any time •There is a limited budget available and the fund will be closed once it is exhausted What happens if my application is successful? •CSSC will support and offer guidance in the planning stages and in the delivery of the activity, as well as assisting with marketing and advertising the activity Requirements from the applicant? •To record all monitoring information •Provide further opportunities if the activity is successful •Providing a case study to allow for sharing of good practice Daisy.Clarke@cssc.co.uk SPORTS DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE National Competitive Events Programme Age Ranges National Competitive Events Programme Gender Differences females males National Competitive Events Programme National Competitive Events Programme Next Steps • Attract younger CSSC members • Attract female CSSC members • Vary the location of events Area Associations Research • 95 Area Associations across the UK • Each Area Association has a committee of volunteers to organise sport and leisure in their area for CSSC members • What types of physical activity opportunities are Area Associations organising?
